Tu is Sainsbury’s clothing label, sold online and in selected Sainsbury’s stores. Its strength is cheap, plain basics for the whole family: jeans from £12.50, school uniform in two-packs and three-packs, and coats around £50. Online orders now run through Argos accounts, and parcels can be collected from Sainsbury’s and Argos stores.

This guide picks six own-label items from the current UK range. The headline advice: buy the long-running lines with hundreds of reviews, read those reviews lowest first, because inconsistent sizing is the commonest complaint, and order with free Click & Collect so a wrong size can go back in store.

Why each one made the list

1Best overall

Black Denim Straight Leg Jeans

Tu’s plain black mid-rise straight jeans in short, regular and long legs, rated 4.6 out of 5 from more than 600 reviews.

These are the kind of jeans Tu does best: mid rise, straight leg, five pockets, zip fly, in a cotton-rich denim with a little stretch (73% cotton, 22% polyester, 3% viscose, 2% elastane). Sizes run from 6 to 24 in short, regular and long lengths, so most heights are covered. When we looked they averaged 4.59 out of 5 from 635 reviews, and the dark denim version had more than 1,300.

Sorted lowest first, the reviews tell one story: sizing drifts between batches. Several long-time buyers found a new pair inches smaller or larger than the same labelled size, and one said the leg was tapered rather than straight. Others called the fabric thin and over-stretchy. Order two sizes if you are unsure.

Good for you if

  • You want plain black jeans for under £20
  • You need a short or long leg

Not for you if

  • You want rigid, heavyweight denim

Black Denim Jeggings

Pull-on black jeggings with an elasticated waist for £12.50, the cheapest full-price denim in this guide.

These are the budget pick: black jeggings with an elasticated pull-on waist, faux front pockets and real back pockets, in a 76% cotton, 22% polyester and 2% elastane blend. Sizes run from 8 to 24. They averaged 4.42 out of 5 from 163 reviews when we checked, with many buyers saying they have bought them for work for years.

The low-rated reviews raise two problems. Black dye fading after one wash comes up again and again, leaving some pairs grey or stone-washed. And the fit varies: buyers found the waist huge, the legs baggy, or a new pair far bigger than the last in the same size. One noted they are mid rise, which the description does not say. Wash inside out, cool.

Good for you if

  • You want pull-on jeans for under £15
  • You prefer an elasticated waist

Not for you if

  • You need black that stays black
  • You want a high rise

The Dark Wash Everyday Denim Jeans

Tu’s core men’s straight jeans in near-pure cotton, waists 30 to 48 in three leg lengths, with nearly 200 reviews.

Tu’s men’s Everyday jeans are a plain straight leg in a dark wash, made of 99% cotton and 1% elastane, so they feel more like traditional denim than the women’s blends. Waists run from 30 to 48 inches in short, regular and long legs, and the line also comes in light and mid denim. They averaged 4.48 out of 5 from 193 reviews when we looked.

The one- and two-star reviews are mostly about measurements. Two buyers measured the long leg at about 32 inches against the 34 they expected, others found pairs oversized or labelled wrongly, and one complained of a short zip. A buyer who has had four pairs in three years says they always split at the crotch seam.

Good for you if

  • You want cotton jeans for £15
  • You need a 30-inch or 48-inch waist

Not for you if

  • You need a true 34-inch leg
4Best for school uniform

Black Woven Reinforced Knee Extendable Hem Trousers 2 Pack

School uniform is where Tu is hardest to beat on price. This two-pack has reinforced knees, hems that unpick to add length, an adjustable waist and a stain-repellent, no-iron crease finish, in 65% polyester and 35% viscose. Sizes run from 3 to 16 years in black, grey or navy, and the price rises with age. Pages showed 15% off kids’ lines when we checked. Reviews averaged 4.63 from 224.

The low-rated reviews are pointed. Several parents say a printed Tu stamp inside now shows through on the outside. Others found the cut very wide or very narrow in the leg, the crotch too long, or the fabric thin and scratchy, and one received a pack with one pair missing.

Good for you if

  • You need several pairs a year
  • Your child is between sizes

Not for you if

  • Your child dislikes polyester

Black Longline Padded Gilet

A longline gilet keeps your core and hips warm while leaving the arms free, which is why reviewers like it for driving and for layering over knitwear. This one is sleeveless, padded and hooded, with a zip front and side pockets, in 100% polyester. It comes in black and light khaki, sizes S to XXL, and averaged 4.86 out of 5 from 71 reviews when we looked, the highest score in this guide.

Its low-rated reviews are mild but real. One buyer found the stitching on the two front panels did not match, another found it small and returned it, and one wished it had poppers over the zip. Polyester padding gives no fill weight to compare.

Good for you if

  • You want warmth without bulky sleeves
  • You drive a lot in winter

Not for you if

  • You need a waterproof
6Best for smart coats

Red Wool Blend Longline Car Coat

This is Tu’s smart coat for the season: a tailored longline car coat with a standard collar, full button fastening and side pockets, in red, brown or khaki. The shell is 65% polyester and 30% wool with small amounts of acrylic, viscose and polyamide, lined in polyester, and the label says it is machine washable, unusual for a wool blend. It averaged 4.46 from 13 reviews when we checked.

Sizing is the recurring complaint. Several reviewers found it oversized, one bought two sizes and found the larger too big and the smaller tight across the hips, and another said the sleeves are very long. One buyer kept the green over the red because it felt softer. Thirteen reviews is a small sample.

Good for you if

  • You want some wool for under £60
  • You want a coat you can wash at home

Not for you if

  • You want a fitted shape
  • You have short arms

Choosing the right one

1Expect sizes to vary between batches

The commonest complaint across the jeans, jeggings and school trousers here is that the same labelled size fits differently from one purchase to the next. If you have a pair that fits, measure its waist and inside leg flat and compare with the size guide before reordering. For a first order, buy two sizes on free Click & Collect and return one in store.

2Choose lines with hundreds of reviews

Tu’s plain denim and school basics carry hundreds of reviews each; most new coats carry a handful or none. A 4.5 from 600 reviews tells you far more than a 5.0 from two. Reviews marked as written on argos.co.uk are mixed in, and Tu notes that post-purchase review emails are incentivised by a prize draw, so the one- and two-star reviews are the useful part.

3Return in store, not by post

Postal returns cost £3.50, taken off your refund unless the item is faulty, which bites hard on a £5.95 pack of school trousers. Returns to an Argos store or a Sainsbury’s with a Tu collection point are free. Keep the tags on and the packaging; Tu only refunds items in fully resaleable condition. Swimwear and underwear can go back only with hygiene seals intact.

Why buy from Tu at Sainsbury's?

Tu’s case is price, convenience and range of sizes. Jeans come in short, regular and long legs, school uniform is sold in multipacks, and you can buy it with the food shop in selected Sainsbury’s stores. Its product reviews are public and many lines carry hundreds of them. Trustpilot rated it 4.1 out of 5 from about 20,000 reviews when we read it.

The recent one- and two-star reviews have little to do with the clothes. They describe Click & Collect orders taking far longer than promised, parcels lost between Tu and Argos, slow refunds, sale orders cancelled without explanation and Evri deliveries gone wrong. Tu also sells other brands, including JD Williams, Jacamo, Simply Be, Regatta and JoJo Maman Bébé, so check whose product you are buying.

Questions people ask

Are Tu returns free?

In store, yes. Home delivery orders can go back to any Argos store or a Tu collection point in Sainsbury’s within 30 days. By post, no: the prepaid Royal Mail label costs £3.50, deducted from your refund unless the item is faulty. Store refunds can take 5 to 7 working days to reach your bank.

Why do I need an Argos account to shop at Tu?

Tu and Argos are both part of Sainsbury’s, and Tu has merged its online accounts into Argos. Old Tu accounts no longer work, so you sign in or register with Argos on either website. Customer service also runs through Argos, and Nectar points need linking to the Argos account.

Is Tu clothing good quality for the price?

For plain basics, mostly: the jeans and school lines here average between 4.4 and 4.6 out of 5 from hundreds of reviews. The weak points are consistent sizing and, on black denim, dye that fades in the wash. Much of the range is polyester-rich, so check the composition on each product page.

Does Tu sell other brands?

Yes. The site now lists brands including JD Williams, Simply Be, Jacamo, Regatta and JoJo Maman Bébé alongside Tu’s own label, and their pages can show different prices and delivery details. All six picks in this guide are Tu’s own label.

Rivals worth a look

  • Matalan sells similar family basics and school uniform, with free returns to its stores.
  • New Look is more fashion-led for women, with more leg lengths on its best jeans.
