Five White Stuff buys worth the money, led by the Rua jersey dress, with the sizing quirks, fibre labels and free shop returns that decide whether an order works out.

White Stuff is a high-street shop first and a website second, which is its main attraction. It sells relaxed cotton dresses, jeans in three leg lengths and soft menswear, mostly to people who like trying things on in a market-town branch.
This guide picks five pieces from the current UK range, each with hundreds or thousands of on-site reviews behind it, and one cardigan we would leave on the rail. The advice that runs through all of them: read the fibre line before the description, expect sizes to vary between colours, and use a shop for collection and returns, because posting things back costs £2.50.
The Rua has its own collection page, and the reason is in the reviews: more than three thousand of them, largely from women who own several. It is a midi shirt dress in a 52/48 mix of organic cotton and TENCEL Modal, with a collar, pockets and an easy fit-and-flare shape, in sizes 6 to 24, regular or petite. A size 12 regular measures about 120cm from shoulder to hem, the petite about 112cm. Read the page carefully: the description says three-quarter sleeves, the bullet points say short.
The complaints are specific. A few buyers reported a strong chemical smell on arrival that airing did not shift. One long-time owner found her new usual size about two inches bigger at the waist than her others, and another said the length shrank after a 30-degree wash.
Yes, if
You want one dress that suits the office and the weekend
You are petite and want a midi that stays midi
No, if
You are short and dislike a long, loose skirt
2Best for petite and tall
Tia Wide Leg Full Length Jean
A high-rise, wide-leg jean in organic and recycled cotton, in short, regular and long, with utility-style pockets.
White Stuff names its jeans by shape, and the Tia is the relaxed wide leg: high-rise, with long utility-style pockets and visible stitching, in 79% organic cotton, 20% recycled cotton and 1% elastane. It comes in sizes 6 to 24 and three lengths, short/petite, regular and long, and a size 12 regular has an inside leg of about 77.5cm. There is also a cropped version.
Reviewers mostly rate it well, and the complaints cluster around size. Several found the waist big for the label (one measured a size 10 at 32 inches) and the legs too long and too wide; one said fit seemed to vary by colour. Others disliked the heavy, stiff denim or the low-set pockets, and two reported tears near a seam or rivet after a couple of wears.
Yes, if
You want a wide leg that reaches the floor in your length
You prefer mostly cotton to stretchy denim
No, if
You want a light, drapey jean
You dislike big patch-style pockets
3Best for autumn
Brooke Cord Straight Trouser
Straight-leg cords in organic cotton with a little stretch, in three leg lengths, that tend to come up small at the waist.
Cord is one of White Stuff’s seasonal strengths, and the Brooke is the straightforward version: a straight, full-length trouser in 98% organic cotton and 2% elastane, in sizes 6 to 24 and short/petite, regular and long. A size 12 has an inside leg of about 77cm. It goes in the washing machine, and more than a hundred reviewers give it a good average.
The critical reviews repeat one point: the waist is small. Several buyers could not do up their usual size, and going up a size left the hips loose. Others say the cord bags at the knees and seat after a few hours, and one found a regular and a short in the same size two inches apart at the waist. A recent reviewer said the dark green looked nothing like the photo.
Yes, if
You want soft cords with a straight, classic leg
You need a short or long length
No, if
You have a small waist relative to your hips
You hate trousers that bag at the knee
4Best for men
Attadale Long Sleeve Crew Neck Jumper
A plain organic cotton crew neck in regular and tall fits, cut long and on the generous side.
White Stuff’s menswear is smaller than the women’s range but sensible, and the Attadale is its simplest jumper: 100% organic cotton, crew neck, classic fit, machine washable, in XS to XXXL and a tall fit. The model is 6ft and wears a medium, which measures about 75cm from shoulder to hem. Buyers who like it buy it in several colours and wear it to work.
The low ratings are mostly about size. Reviewers repeatedly call it very long in the body and big for the label, with more than one sizing down and still finding it loose. One said it lost its shape in the arms after a single wear, and an older review reported neck stitching coming undone after one wash. If you are not tall, start a size down.
Yes, if
You are tall and tired of jumpers that stop at the belt
You want cotton rather than wool
No, if
You are short in the body
You want a slim, fitted knit
5Also great
Taylor Straight Jean
A slim-straight jean fitted through the waist and thigh, in the same organic and recycled cotton denim as the Tia, for £10 less.
If the Tia is too much fabric, the Taylor is the neater option: fitted at the waist and thigh and a little looser from the knee, in 79% organic cotton, 20% recycled cotton and 1% elastane. It comes in sizes 6 to 24 with short/petite, regular and long lengths, and a size 12 regular has an inside leg of about 76cm. It costs £59, ten pounds less than the Tia.
With well over a hundred reviews it rates a little lower than the Tia, and the reasons are consistency and cut. One buyer’s two pairs, both labelled short, differed in length by three inches; another could not fasten a lighter wash in the size that fitted her darker pair. Others found the leg wider and the waist higher than expected, and the fabric thinner than older styles.

Why White Stuff, and why not
White Stuff’s best argument is its shops. Click and collect is free to any mainland White Stuff branch, usually the next day, and online orders can go back to a shop free, against £2.50 by post. If you return a whole order to a shop within seven working days, the delivery charge comes back too. Organic cotton runs through the range, and women’s sizes go to 24 with petite and long lengths.
Where rivals win: Seasalt publishes more technical detail and makes better raincoats, M&S is cheaper and has more branches, and Boden is bolder with print. White Stuff’s Trustpilot score is high, but the recent one-star reviews are about orders split into several parcels, items quietly put on back order, and Evri deliveries that stalled. Its knitwear also mixes natural and synthetic fibres at similar prices.
How to choose
1Pick the leg length from the inside-leg figure
Most White Stuff jeans and trousers come in short/petite, regular and long, and each product page gives the inside leg for a size 12 regular: about 76cm on the Taylor, 77cm on the Brooke, 77.5cm on the Tia. Measure a pair you like and compare. Reviews suggest the same label can vary by an inch or more between batches, so check the length before you wash or hem anything.
2Read the fibre line, not the description
White Stuff’s product copy is chatty and says little about materials. The bullet list under it does: the Rua is cotton and TENCEL Modal, the jeans are organic and recycled cotton, and the Margot cardigan, which looks like wool in the photos, is mostly recycled polyester and acrylic. Price is not a reliable guide to fibre, so read the composition on every knit.
3Expect colours to fit differently
A recurring complaint in the reviews for this guide is that one colour of a style fits and another, in the same size, does not: the Taylor, the Tia and the Rua all have examples. If you love a pair, order the second colour from a shop or into a shop for collection, so you can try it before paying to post it back.
Not on our list, and why
Margot Cardi
A fuzzy, button-to-the-neck cardigan at £65 with patch pockets, which looks like wool and is 84% recycled polyester, 14% acrylic and 2% elastane. The page itself suggests sizing down. Its low ratings are dominated by bobbling, often after one or two wears, plus holes within a month for one buyer and sleeves too long and a body too short for others.

Can I return a White Stuff online order to a shop?
Yes, to any White Stuff shop except outlets and concessions inside department stores such as John Lewis. Bring the dispatch note and the card you paid with. It is free, whereas Royal Mail or Evri returns cost £2.50, and if the whole order goes back to a shop within seven working days of delivery, the delivery charge is refunded too.
Does White Stuff sizing come up big or small?
It depends on the garment, which is the honest problem. In the reviews we read, the Tia jeans and the Attadale jumper run large, while the Brooke cords run small at the waist, and the Margot cardigan’s own page recommends sizing down. Use the measurements on each product page rather than your usual size, and try in a shop where you can.
How many shops does White Stuff have?
The site is not quite sure. When we checked, the banner on product pages said free click and collect from 125 UK shops, while the delivery page said customers can choose from 115. The gap is probably concessions and outlets, which are excluded from collection and returns, so check the shop finder for the branch you plan to use.
Other brands to consider
Seasalt Cornwall is the closest rival, with more organic cotton, published raincoat ratings and its own shop network.
FatFace covers similar relaxed weekend clothes with a larger menswear range and returns to any Next store.
