Seven Whistles pieces worth the money, from the barrel-leg jean with hundreds of reviews to a pure cashmere roll neck, plus the sizing quirks and refund delays to plan around.

Whistles is the London label for women who want their clothes to look considered without looking like they tried. It is strongest on trousers, jeans, knitwear and coats, and its product pages are unusually plain-spoken: every one lists the composition, the length in centimetres and the model’s height and size.
This guide picks seven things from the current UK range, plus one popular jumper we would leave alone. The headline advice is to read the reviews by colour, because several of the best sellers fit differently depending on which shade you order, and to buy in a standalone shop if you can. Returns there are free and refunded on the spot; by post they cost £1.95 and can take weeks to clear.
Whistles calls the barrel leg its signature, and the customers agree: the black pair alone carried 646 reviews averaging 4.4 out of 5 when we read the page. It is a high-rise jean, fitted at the waist, looser through the thigh and cut to 68cm in the regular leg, in 99% cotton with 1% elastane. A petite version is sold separately.
One oddity on the page: the fit notes list it as non-stretch denim while the copy calls it stretch. The low-star reviews have a clear theme, and it is consistency. Several owners of an earlier pair found the black or the light wash ran smaller at the waist than the colour they already had, and one long-time buyer said the dark denim had become lighter and wider in the leg. If you are replacing a pair, do not assume the same size.
Suits you if
You want a jean with shape that is not skinny
You are petite and want a proper short leg
Look elsewhere if
You are replacing an old pair and need an exact match
You want a rigid, non-stretch denim
2Best for workdays
Lila Ponte Trouser
A slim, tapered ponte trouser with no waistband to dig in, cut to the ankle and happy in the washing machine.
The Lila is the trouser that makes the case for Whistles as a workwear shop. It is a slim, carrot-shaped pull-on in a stretch ponte of 68% LENZING ECOVERO viscose, 28% polyamide and 4% elastane, with two side pockets, an ankle length and a machine-wash label. There is a petite cut too. When we read the page in October it was reduced to £65 from £99, so check before you pay full price.
Reviews are mostly warm (4.0 from 24), with praise for how it hangs and resists creasing. The complaints are specific: one owner could see the pocket bags through the fabric, another found it too heavy, and a third received a pair labelled 10 that measured as an 8. One reviewer who is usually an 8 bought a 6.
Suits you if
You want smart trousers that skip the dry cleaner
You dislike a stiff waistband
Look elsewhere if
You want wool tailoring that holds a crease
3Best value
Annie Sparkle Crew Neck
Whistles’ bestselling sparkle jumper: a soft viscose-mix crew neck flecked with metallic yarn that goes in the washing machine.
The Annie is the jumper Whistles brings back every autumn in new colours, and the page calls it a bestseller. The black version is flecked with silver metallic yarn, measures 60cm long and is 64% LENZING ECOVERO viscose, 35% polyamide and 1% metallic fibre. It is machine washable, which is rare for anything that sparkles. With 112 reviews averaging 4.6 it is one of the better-rated knits on the site.
It is not wool, and the low ratings show where that matters. Several returning buyers said a newer colour felt thinner or bigger than the one they owned, one found the grey see-through enough to send back, and another received a jumper too creased to rescue. Buy the colour with the most recent good reviews.
Suits you if
You want something festive that is not a dress
You want knitwear that survives a machine wash
Look elsewhere if
You want natural fibres for warmth
You dislike any sheen at all
4Best upgrade
Cashmere Seam Roll Neck Knit
Pure traceable cashmere in a regular-fit roll neck with seam detailing, and much happier reviews than the plainer roll neck Whistles also sells.
If you want cashmere from Whistles, this is the one to buy. It is 100% cashmere, labelled traceable, in a regular fit with a roll neck, raised seams and a 64cm body, and it is hand wash in cool water only. The 20% knitwear promotion running in October brought it down to £159.20.
Its ten reviews average 4.8, and reviewers describe it as light and cosy. It is a small sample, so treat that as early evidence. The criticisms so far are about shape: one owner on her second found the ribbed cuffs and hem loose and flappy, and a gift buyer called the size generous. The product copy on the black version also describes it as navy, a small slip worth knowing if you are choosing by the words rather than the photographs.
Suits you if
You want pure cashmere with a little detail
You will hand wash it properly
Look elsewhere if
You like a close, firm rib at the cuff
You want lots of reviews before spending this much
5Best for showery days
Ida Short Quilted Coat
A short, cocoon-shaped quilted coat in recycled polyester that is shower proof and machine washable, in a long run of colours.
The Ida is Whistles’ answer to the quilted jacket everyone owns, made more interesting by a rounded cocoon shape. It is 100% recycled polyester inside and out, shower proof, fastens with a zip and buttons and stops at 66cm. It also goes in the washing machine, which few coats at this price do. Reviews average 4.1 from 60.
The page itself warns that it is oversized and suggests sizing down for a closer fit, and the reviews back that up firmly: one buyer said two people could fit in it, and several shorter women felt swamped. Others found the fabric thin and lighter than expected, reported bobbling cuffs and a stiff zip, and missed an inside pocket. Treat it as a layer for mild, damp days rather than a winter coat.
Suits you if
You want a washable coat for drizzle
You like a roomy shape over knitwear
Look elsewhere if
You are petite and dislike volume
You need real warmth for winter
6Best for petites
Riley Trench Coat
A relaxed, double-breasted, mid-length trench in a soft viscose blend, sold in regular and petite cuts.
The Riley has been in the range for several seasons and comes in a properly re-cut petite version as well as the regular. It is a relaxed, double-breasted trench with patch pockets, about 114cm long in a size 10, in 92% viscose and 8% polyester with a polyester lining. The page says it runs slightly loose and recommends sizing down for a closer fit.
The fabric is the catch, and the reviews (4.2 from 15) keep returning to it. It creases badly, often arrives creased from a small box, and one buyer sent it back because it is not waterproof at all. Another noted that it is not fully lined. It is dry clean only. Buy it for the drape and keep an umbrella; it is not the rain-proof trench the name suggests.
Suits you if
You are petite and struggle with coat lengths
You want a soft, drapey trench rather than stiff cotton
Look elsewhere if
You need a coat that keeps the rain out
You will not steam or press a coat
7Best gift
Emilia Cuff Slipper
Suede slip-on slippers with a sheepskin cuff and lining, an easy present at a price below most of the shop.
Whistles sells these as a Christmas present, and they are an easy one. The upper is cow suede, the lining and turned-down cuff are sheepskin, and the sole is a lightweight EVA. They come in taupe, black and chocolate, and the 13 reviews average 4.2, with owners describing them as cosy and good quality.
The weak points are practical. The care label says do not wash, so suede and sheepskin need careful handling, and an EVA sole is made for floors rather than the garden path. The low-star reviews are mostly about service rather than the slipper: one parcel was still awaited when the buyer wrote, and one pair arrived in a different colour from the website. A gift buyer had to return a pair that did not fit, so check the recipient’s size.
Suits you if
You want a present that feels more expensive than it is
You prefer real sheepskin to fleece
Look elsewhere if
You want slippers you can put in the washing machine

Working out which one is yours
1Read the reviews for your colour
Whistles reviews show the colour and size each reviewer bought, and that matters more here than at most shops. On the barrel-leg jean, the cashmere roll neck and the Annie jumper, the low ratings repeatedly come from buyers whose second colour fitted or felt different from their first. Before you order, filter the reviews mentally by shade, then check the length in centimetres on the page against something you already own.
2Take the size-down notes seriously
Several product pages tell you to size down: the Ida quilted coat and the Riley trench both say so in the fit notes, and reviewers who ignored the advice sent them back. The pages also give the model’s height and size, which is the quickest way to judge a length. If you are 5ft 3in or under, look for the petite label first rather than taking up a regular hem.
3Shop the promotions, then claim the difference
When we checked in October 2026 there was 20% off knitwear and coats, and the Lila trousers were down from £99 to £65. Prices move often. If something you bought online is reduced within 28 days of your order, the price-match form refunds the difference, though you commit to keeping the item. Newsletter sign-ups get 15% off a first order, and student and key-worker discounts are listed in the footer.
4Return in person if you possibly can
Returns to a standalone Whistles shop are free and refunded to your card on the spot. By post they cost £1.95, deducted from the refund, and the returns page allows 14 working days for processing plus three to five for the bank. Concessions, outlets and TFG Norwich will not take online returns, and there are no postal exchanges. Keep proof of postage until the money arrives.
Where Whistles wins, and where rivals do
Whistles sits between the high street and designer labels, and it earns that position on cut and candour. The product pages give composition, lining, length and fit advice for everything, a petite range runs across trousers, jeans and coats, and a price-match form refunds the difference if something you bought online is reduced within 28 days.
Rivals win in places. Reiss is more polished for suiting and runs a bigger delivery network, Jigsaw has the stronger knitwear, and Hush is cheaper for weekend clothes. Whistles’ real weakness this year is service. Its Trustpilot score was 4.1 from about 3,100 reviews when we read it, but the recent one-star reviews are a long queue of refunds still unpaid after two weeks or more, orders cancelled after payment, and the £1.95 postal return fee deducted even from a buyer who used a free courier label.
Not on our list, and why
Cashmere Roll Neck
Pure cashmere at £199 (£159.20 in the October promotion), and the plainer sibling of our upgrade pick. Its reviews average 3.7 from 55, and the low ones come from repeat buyers: thinner, coarser, shorter or itchier than the ones they bought before, with a camel version singled out. The seam version costs the same and is far better reviewed.

Broadly, but not consistently between colours of the same style. Reviews of the barrel-leg jean and the Lila trouser include buyers who went down a size and others who found one colour tighter than another. Several coats and knits are deliberately oversized, and their pages say so. Use the centimetre lengths and the model’s height and size on each page, and if you are near a standalone shop, try on there.
How long do Whistles refunds take?
The returns page allows 14 working days for a postal return to reach the warehouse and be processed, then three to five days for the bank. In practice the recent one-star Trustpilot reviews describe longer waits, including some after returns made in a shop. Returning in a standalone store is still the quickest route, and keep your proof of postage until the money arrives.
Can I exchange a size at Whistles?
Not by post. Whistles refunds postal returns rather than exchanging them, so you place a new order for the size you want and send the first one back, paying the £1.95 postal return fee. A standalone shop can sort it out in person, provided it has your size in stock.
Is the Whistles cashmere worth it?
The newer Cashmere Seam Roll Neck Knit is well reviewed so far. The plainer Cashmere Roll Neck is not: its rating was 3.7 from 55 reviews when we read it, with repeated complaints that recent batches feel thinner and scratchier than older ones. Both are 100% cashmere at the same price, so buy the seam version, and wait for one of the regular knitwear promotions.
Other brands to consider
Reiss is the more polished choice for women’s suiting, with quicker delivery and free returns to Next stores.
Hush is cheaper and more relaxed, better for weekend clothes than for the office.
