Toast sells calm, natural-fibre clothes to people who would rather buy one good jumper than four cheap ones. It is expensive, and it does not pretend otherwise: there are no rolling discount codes, and the sale comes at the end of each season.

This guide picks six things from the current UK range, four for women and one each for men and for bedtime, plus one coat we would skip. The headline advice is to treat the fit notes as instructions. Toast’s product pages say plainly when a cut is oversized, when indigo will rub off on a pale sofa and when wax will fade unevenly, and the disappointed reviews mostly come from people who skimmed them.

The 6 we'd buy, in detail

1Best overall

Orla Donegal Wool Sweater

An easy-fitting raglan jumper in flecked wool spun in Donegal, and the best-reviewed piece of women’s knitwear we found on the site.

The Orla is the Toast idea in one garment: a plain, easy-fitting jumper made interesting by the yarn. The wool is spun in Donegal and carries the coloured flecks, or nepp, that Donegal yarn is known for. The shape is simple, with raglan sleeves, a ribbed neck and hem with rolled edges, and a mid-hip length. It is 100% wool, hand wash only, and made in Romania. The navy averaged 4.8 from 121 reviews when we read it.

The criticisms are worth knowing. Several reviewers found the wool coarse or scratchy, one enough to stop wearing it, and wear a T-shirt underneath. Others found the body short or the A-line shape stiff at the back. One expected it to be knitted in Ireland; only the yarn is. The page warns that soft yarns pill.

Pick it if

  • You want a warm jumper with texture
  • You are petite and like a shorter body

Pass if

  • Wool against bare skin makes you itch
  • You want a long, hip-covering jumper

Annie Denim Side Button Jeans

Toast’s signature straight, cropped jean with side buttons and carpenter pockets, and more customer reviews than anything else we looked at.

The Annie is the jean regular Toast customers own in several colours, and the indigo pair carried 511 reviews averaging 4.7 when we read it. It sits on the waist with a flat front, side corozo buttons instead of a fly, topstitched carpenter pockets and a buttoned back pocket, then falls straight to the ankle. It is 98% organic cotton with 2% elastane, made in Türkiye and machine washable. The page warns of colour rub when new.

The low ratings are about fit and finish. Several buyers say sizing has changed, with a narrow, high waist or tight thighs compared with an older pair, and one found the button placket unreinforced. Taller buyers have long complained about the cropped length; Toast now sells the Annie Denim Full Length Jeans for them.

Pick it if

  • You want a flat-fronted jean without a fly
  • You like a cropped, straight leg

Pass if

  • You are tall and want full-length jeans
  • You carry weight at the waist rather than the hip

Frankie Waxed Cotton Raglan Coat

A mid-calf A-line raincoat in waxed organic cotton from Halley Stevensons of Dundee, fully lined and made to be worn for years.

This is a lot of money for a cotton coat, and the reason is the cloth. The waxed organic cotton comes from Halley Stevensons, a Dundee mill, and the coat is cut to a gentle A-line with raglan sleeves, large patch pockets, a deep back vent and a lining, finishing at mid-calf. It is made in Romania and needs a specialist dry cleaner. The page says uneven colour and gradual fading are part of waxed cotton, not a defect.

Reviews average 4.6 from 39, and they agree on one problem: it is narrow across the shoulders. Several buyers sized up, and one who normally wears a medium found the large too tight there. Others mention creasing and very little wax, and most of the four-star reviews dock a star for the price.

Pick it if

  • You want a long coat for showers and wind
  • You like a coat that ages and fades

Pass if

  • You have broad shoulders
  • You want a fully waterproof technical coat
4Best for men

Rory Carpenter Japanese Denim Jeans

Straight carpenter jeans in denim dyed and shuttle-woven in Okayama, Japan, with mismatched patch pockets and the highest rating of any pick here.

Toast’s menswear is smaller than its womenswear and easy to overlook, but the Rory is worth finding. The denim is dyed and woven on traditional shuttle looms in Ibara, Okayama, and the jeans are cut with straight legs, an easy fit below the waist, a reinforced back and mismatched patch pockets, one on the side of the leg. They are 100% cotton, made in China, and go in the machine at 30 degrees. Reviews averaged 4.9 from 46.

The only below-five-star review with detail is specific. Its writer loves them but found more loose threads than usual around the belt loops and buttons, and said they bag at the knee and seat after a long sit, until the next wash. The page also warns that indigo will rub onto pale fabrics.

Pick it if

  • You want a relaxed workwear jean with good cloth
  • You like useful pockets

Pass if

  • You want a slim or skinny fit
  • You sit on a cream sofa in new jeans

Soft Double Faced Cotton Pyjamas

Brushed chambray pyjamas lined with striped cotton that shows when you turn up the cuffs, sold as a full set.

Toast began with nightwear, and these are a good reminder why. The organic cotton is double-faced, brushed chambray outside and striped within, so turned-up cuffs show the stripe. The top has a collar, corozo buttons and a patch pocket; the trousers have an elasticated drawstring waist with herringbone ties and side pockets. They are 100% cotton, made in India and machine washable at 30 degrees, and unlike some rivals’ pyjamas they come as a set.

Reviews average 4.7 from 34, and one swimming group buys them for each other as gifts. The complaints: one buyer found the trousers enormous next to the top, a repeat buyer found the same size two inches bigger this time, and the cloth is thick enough to be too warm in summer.

Pick it if

  • You want a present that feels special
  • You sleep in a cold room

Pass if

  • You run warm at night
  • Your top and bottom sizes differ a lot

Wool Cashmere Crew Neck Sweater

A regular-fit crew neck in a wool and cashmere blend, with a shaped yoke and offset ribbing, for anyone who finds Donegal wool too rough.

If the Orla sounds too scratchy, this is the softer choice. It is a regular-fit crew neck with an integrally knitted yoke and offset ribbing at the cuffs and hem, in 70% wool and 30% cashmere; the description calls the cashmere recycled. It is mid-hip length, hand wash only and made in China. The dark navy averaged 4.7 from 22 reviews, and one buyer said a similar Toast jumper had lasted over ten years with a couple of repairs.

The weak points are proportion and pilling. The page lists the sleeve as longer length, and two reviewers returned it because the sleeves or body were too long; another found the neckline higher than expected. A happy repeat buyer still reported considerable pilling, so budget for a pilling comb.

Pick it if

  • You want softness without pure cashmere’s fragility
  • You have long arms

Pass if

  • You have short arms and hate turning cuffs
  • You will not de-pill a jumper

How to choose

1Believe the word oversized

Toast’s fit notes are short and accurate: easy, regular or oversized, plus the length and the studio model’s height and size. When a page says oversized, the reviews confirm it, sometimes painfully: Conservatoire coat buyers found even the smallest size huge. The exception is the shoulder: the Frankie coat runs narrow there, and reviewers sized up. Compare the model’s height with yours before choosing.

2Keep the tags on until you are sure

Returns must be unused with swing tags attached, and Toast will refuse items it does not consider resalable. One recent one-star review describes a scratchy Donegal jumper that could not go back because the tag was off after a few hours of wear. Try knitwear on over a thin top at home, check for itch, then cut the tag. Wool from Donegal is more rustic than merino.

3Wait for the end of the season

Toast does not run rolling codes. Its help pages say it usually holds a sale at the end of each season, and newsletter sign-ups hear about it first. Sale buys have half the returns window of full-price ones, and free delivery over £150 applies only to full-price orders. Basics like plain tees gain least from the Toast premium; coats and knitwear gain most.

Why buy from Toast?

Toast’s case is the cloth and what happens after you buy it. Product pages name the mill, the fibre and the country of manufacture, and they warn you about fading, colour rub and pilling in advance. Then there is Toast Repair: bring any Toast garment to one of its shops, however old, and it will be mended free, often visibly with sashiko or darning. Toast says it has mended more than 9,000 pieces. UK returns are free too.

Rivals win on price. Hush and Seasalt cover similar relaxed ground for much less, and Whistles is sharper for work. Toast’s Trustpilot score was 4.0 from about 680 reviews when we read it, and the recent one-star reviews complain about price, scratchy wool that could not go back once the tag was off, and faulty items met with a partial discount rather than a refund.

The ones we passed over

Wool Conservatoire Coat

A rounded, oversized boiled wool coat at £525, sold in only three sizes and labelled do not wash. Reviews are decent overall, but buttons are a theme: one came off on the first wear for one buyer, and another lost the same button on both the original and its replacement. Others were swamped even by the smallest size. At this price, the Frankie is the better coat.

Questions people ask

Is Toast worth the money?

For coats and knitwear, often yes; for basics, rarely. The case rests on the fabrics, which are named down to the mill, and on free lifetime repairs in Toast shops. Reviews of the picks here are strong, but even happy buyers often dock a star for price. If you will wear something for years, the cost per wear comes down. If it is a trend piece, buy it elsewhere.

How does Toast’s free repair service work?

Take the garment to a Toast shop. A repair specialist or shop colleague talks through visible or invisible mending, such as sashiko, darning, patching or appliqué, and you get email updates until it is ready to collect. The mending is free for any Toast garment regardless of age or where it was bought. Postage home is a small charge, and shoes, bags, accessories, swimwear and underwear are not accepted.

Can I exchange a size with Toast?

Not by post. Toast no longer runs postal exchanges: you call customer services, pay for the new size, which is sent without a further delivery charge, and return the original for a refund. In a Toast shop you can exchange an online order directly, if the shop has your size.

Alternatives worth a look

  • Hush covers relaxed weekend clothes for much less, though its knitwear blends and service are weaker.
  • Seasalt offers a brighter Cornish take on natural fabrics at prices much closer to the high street.
  • Whistles is sharper and more urban, better for office trousers than for slow weekends.
