Seasalt sells a Cornish idea of dressing: organic cotton stripes, printed jersey dresses, cord trousers and raincoats meant for coast paths and school runs. It suits people who want natural fibres and quiet colour, and who are happy to pay a little more than the high street for them.

This guide picks six things from the current UK range and reads the lowest-rated reviews for each. The short version: buy the cotton and the coats, read every knitwear label, and use a Seasalt shop for returns if you can, because posting them back now costs £2.99.

The picks, one by one

1Best overall

Sailor Shirt in GOTS-Certified Organic Cotton Jersey

Seasalt’s bestselling Breton, in certified organic cotton with stripes dyed into the yarn, and the most-reviewed thing on the site.

This is the reason to shop at Seasalt. It is a relaxed, boat-necked Breton in 100% organic cotton jersey, certified to GOTS by the Soil Association, with yarn-dyed stripes, so the colour is in the thread rather than printed on. It goes in the machine at 30 degrees. When we checked, some colourways were reduced to £19.95 and the rest were £29.95, and well over two thousand reviewers rate it highly.

The weak spots are familiar ones for jersey. The one-star reviews include tops that developed small holes after a wash or a few hours’ wear (a Trustpilot reviewer said the same this month), sleeves far too long for shorter buyers, and a couple that shrank. Wash it cool, inside out, and check the sleeve length before you cut the tags.

Yes, if

  • You want a stripe that works under knits and pinafores
  • Organic cotton matters to you

No, if

  • You have short arms and dislike rolling sleeves
2Best for wet weather

Janelle Waterproof Raincoat

A knee-length, fleece-lined raincoat in recycled nylon with a 5,000mm waterproof rating, in petite, regular and tall.

Seasalt publishes a waterproof rating, which most fashion brands do not. The Janelle is rated at 5,000mm hydrostatic head and 5,000g breathability, with a recycled nylon outer, a PFC-free coating, recycled fleece lining the upper half and quilting below. The peaked hood detaches, there are reflective strips and zipped pockets, and it comes in petite, regular and tall. It machine washes at 30.

Five thousand millimetres is a town-and-coast-path rating, not a mountain one, and some one-star reviews say so bluntly: owners caught in a long downpour found the lining wet in patches. The other recurring complaint comes from repeat buyers, who say the new version is cut smaller across the chest and shoulders than their old Janelle. Order your usual size and one up.

Yes, if

  • You want a warm, long raincoat for everyday wet weather
  • You need a petite or tall length

No, if

  • You walk for hours in heavy rain
  • You want a light, packable shell
3Best for everyday dresses

Veronica Midi Dress in GOTS-Certified Organic Cotton Jersey

The Veronica is Seasalt’s dress for ordinary days: a waisted, relaxed midi in 96% organic cotton with 4% elastane, box pleats at the skirt, in-seam pockets, a round neck and three-quarter sleeves. It comes in petite, regular and tall, and the model on the page is 5ft 10 in a size 8, which helps when choosing a length. More than a thousand reviewers rate it highly, and several own it in many prints.

Colour is the main complaint. A run of reviews say the print arrived brighter, duller or a different shade from the screen, and one buyer who owns twenty Veronicas says the latest fabric feels cheaper and scratchier. A few found it thin or tight across the bust.

Yes, if

  • You want a dress with pockets that goes in the washing machine
  • You are petite or tall

No, if

  • You need the colour to match the photo exactly
4Best for men

Men’s Tidesman Waterproof Coat

A longer men’s raincoat in waterproofed organic cotton twill, rated at 5,000mm, let down by a zip that reviewers keep complaining about.

Care

The Tidesman is the men’s coat worth the trip. The outer is Seasalt’s Tin Cloth, an organic cotton twill with a PFC-free treatment rated at 5,000mm, lined with lightly quilted recycled polyester and fleece across the upper back. It has an adjustable hood, zip and snap fastening, and front pockets with a side entry for cold hands. Seasalt suggests Nikwax products to wash and reproof it.

The reviews are good on warmth and look and consistent on one fault: the zip. Owners describe it as flimsy, prone to sticking halfway, and fastening on the side usually used for women’s coats. Two say it failed within a year or two. Others found the hood large and heavy. Try the zip several times before you wear it outside.

Yes, if

  • You prefer a cotton coat to a nylon shell
  • You want hip-length cover in town

No, if

  • A fiddly zip would drive you mad
  • You want a coat with no synthetic lining

Larissa Plain Shirt in Crinkled Organic Cotton

Seasalt’s long-running Larissa shirt, now in plain colours, in crinkled organic cotton voile that you twist rather than iron.

The details

Care

Check price at Seasalt Cornwall

The Larissa has long been sold in prints; this is the plain version, in organic cotton voile with a deliberate crinkle. The care advice is to wash it and twist it to keep the texture, so it is one of the few shirts that improves from being stuffed in a bag. It is semi-fitted, with a collar, roll-back cuffs, a curved hem and side slits, and machine washes at 30.

With only a couple of dozen reviews, it is early days, and the critical ones are about fit and colour. A few buyers found the sleeves tight once rolled, one said the plain version is shaped differently from her printed Larissas, and one found the white see-through. Two said the blue was darker than the photo.

Yes, if

  • You travel light and hate ironing
  • You want a cotton shirt to wear open over a T-shirt

No, if

  • You want a crisp, smooth shirt
  • You need an opaque white

Trethornes Tapered Cord Trousers

Wide-wale organic cotton cords with darts and a subtle taper, in petite and regular, cut generously through the leg.

Cord is something Seasalt does well, and the Trethornes are the pair to look at this season: 100% organic cotton wide-wale cord, organic cotton pockets, darts front and back, a zip and button fly and a relaxed, tapered leg. They come in petite and regular, in colours from birch to maritime, and machine wash at 30. The web address calls them barrel-leg, which is a fair hint at the shape.

Most reviewers like the fabric, but the shape divides them. Several found the legs very wide or the fit hard to judge, one went down two sizes, and one complained that the label calls them seven-eighths length when the product page does not. A buyer at 5ft 1 found even the petite too long.

Yes, if

  • You like a roomy, soft cord trouser
  • You can try them in a shop

No, if

  • You want a slim, straight leg

Where Seasalt Cornwall wins, and where rivals do

Seasalt’s advantage is candour about materials. It publishes waterproof ratings for its raincoats, names its organic cotton certification and certifier, and lists compositions plainly on every page we read. Add petite and tall lengths on dresses and coats, a shop network of 75 UK branches, and a Trustpilot score of 4.7 from more than 128,000 reviews (Seasalt invites them), and it is a sound place to buy cotton and outerwear.

Rivals win on price and on knitwear. Boden and FatFace run deeper discounts, M&S is far cheaper for basics, and specialist outdoor brands make lighter, more waterproof shells. Seasalt’s own knitwear is mostly merino with recycled nylon, and its bestselling jumper has the worst reviews of anything we read. Postal returns now cost money too.

Working out which one is yours

1Read the rating, not the word waterproof

Seasalt’s coats state their hydrostatic head, and the Janelle and Tidesman are both 5,000mm. That keeps out showers and an hour of steady rain but not a full day on the hills, which is what the critical reviews describe. Choose by how you use a coat: the fleece-lined nylon Janelle for warmth on dog walks, the cotton Tidesman for town, and an outdoor brand for serious hillwalking.

2Assume repeat buys may fit differently

The commonest complaint across these reviews is from loyal customers: a new Janelle that will not zip over the chest, a Veronica in a different fabric, a Sailor Shirt with longer sleeves. Seasalt revises its cuts without renaming them. If you are replacing something you love, compare the measurements in the size guide with the old garment, and order before your size sells out.

3Use a shop for returns and collection

Click and collect to a Seasalt shop is free, and shops hold parcels for 14 days. Returns to a shop are free too, while the online portal deducts £2.99 from your refund. When we checked, the returns page also apologised for problems creating a free returns label, a phrase the rest of the page has dropped. If there is a branch near you, the shop route saves money.

The ones we passed over

Fruity Jumper

Seasalt’s oversized bestseller is 80% merino and 20% recycled nylon, hand wash cold only, at £59. It has the weakest reviews of anything we read here, with far more one-star ratings than the Sailor Shirt. Buyers describe heavy bobbling after a couple of wears and shrinkage even after a careful hand wash. One was told in a shop to buy a de-bobbler.

Questions people ask

Are Seasalt raincoats really waterproof?

They are rated, which is more than most fashion brands offer. The Janelle and Tidesman are both rated at 5,000mm, with a PFC-free waterproof coating, suited to everyday rain. Reviews of the Janelle include a handful from owners who got wet through in long downpours, so for hours outdoors in bad weather, look at a specialist shell with a higher rating.

Is it free to return Seasalt orders?

Only to a shop. Returns taken to any UK Seasalt shop are free, but the online returns portal charges £2.99, deducted from your refund, unless the item is faulty. Standard delivery is refunded only if you register the return within 14 days of delivery. Postal exchanges are not offered: send the item back and reorder.

Why does my new Seasalt piece fit differently from my old one?

Because Seasalt updates its patterns while keeping the names. Reviews of the Janelle, Veronica and Sailor Shirt all include long-time buyers who found the latest version smaller, longer or in a different fabric. Check the size guide and the model’s height and size on the product page each time, rather than reordering on trust.

Alternatives worth a look

  • White Stuff covers similar relaxed ground with more prints, free shop returns and fewer technical claims.
  • Boden is brighter and more confident with print, with free UK returns but no shops.
  • FatFace is cheaper for weekend cotton and returns free to any Next store.
