Boden is the British brand people buy for colour: printed dresses, striped tops and children’s clothes that survive a younger sibling. It suits anyone who wants some personality in their wardrobe without designer prices, and who is willing to read a size guide properly.

This guide picks seven things worth buying from the current UK range, from a £39 Breton to a tailored wool coat, plus two we would leave alone. The headline advice is short. Boden runs discount codes so often that the full price is rarely the real one, so wait for a code, read the fabric composition before you look at the price, and lean on the free UK returns.

The 7 we'd buy, in detail

1Best overall

Naomi Relaxed Jersey Dress

A pocketed, knee-length jersey dress in a cotton and modal mix that suits more people, on more days of the year, than anything else Boden sells.

Stock photo

from £79Boden UK price, October 2026

The details

Fabric
50% cotton, 50% TENCEL Modal
Fit
straight, falls on the knee
Lengths
petite, regular and long
Care
machine washable
Check price at Boden

Dresses are the reason most people shop at Boden, and the Naomi is the one that fits into an ordinary week. It is a straight, knee-length jersey dress with long sleeves, a notched high neck and side-seam pockets, in a 50/50 mix of cotton and TENCEL Modal that goes in the washing machine. It comes in petite, regular and long fits across sizes 4 to 22, which matters more than any print.

It is also one of the most-reviewed dresses on the site, and the praise is consistent: easy to wear, true to size, bought again in a second colour. So are the complaints. Several buyers of the black found the jersey thin enough to see light through, and a few found the waist sits higher than they expected. If you are unsure, order two sizes and send one back.

Suits you if

  • You want one dress for work days and weekends
  • You need a petite or long fit rather than a hem to take up

Look elsewhere if

  • You want a warm winter dress; the jersey is light
  • You dislike a raised waistline

Olivia Long Sleeve Breton

Boden’s long-sleeved Breton in all-cotton jersey: the cheapest way into the brand, and the piece regular customers say they own in several colours.

Stock photo

£39Boden UK price, October 2026

The details

Fabric
100% cotton (rib 97% cotton, 3% elastane)
Fit
slim, falls between waist and hip
Sizes
4 to 22
Care
machine washable
Check price at Boden

The Breton is a Boden signature, and the Olivia is the current long-sleeved version: a slim, boat-necked top in 100% cotton, with a little elastane only in the rib. At £39 before any code it is the least expensive way to find out whether Boden’s sizing suits you, and it runs from size 4 to 22 in stripe colourways that change with the seasons.

It is not a flawless basic. Recent reviews include a cluster from long-standing buyers who say the fit has shifted: sleeves too long for some, a body boxier or tighter than their older Bretons for others. A few mention creasing after the wash. Measure a top you already own and compare it with the garment measurements on the product page before you order.

Suits you if

  • You want a dependable layer under knitwear and pinafores
  • You are trying Boden for the first time

Look elsewhere if

  • You will not iron a jersey top
  • You want an exact match for an older Boden Breton
3Best for workdays

Tie Waist Ponte Dress

A heavyweight ponte midi with concealed pockets, a side zip and a cotton lining: the smartest Boden dress here for under £100.

Stock photo

from £89Boden UK price, October 2026

The details

Fabric
88% viscose, 10% recycled polyester, 2% elastane
Lining
100% cotton
Length
falls at mid-calf
Care
machine washable
Check price at Boden

Ponte is the fabric Boden does best for workwear, and this is the most straightforward of its current ponte dresses. It is a fit-and-flare midi in a viscose-rich double knit (88% LENZING ECOVERO viscose with recycled polyester and elastane), lined in cotton, with concealed side pockets and a side zip. It is machine washable and comes in petite, regular and long.

The handful of reviews so far describe a thick, smooth fabric that suits autumn and winter, and a true midi length. The fabric tie is the weak point: one buyer found it bulky and said it will not lie flat, and a shorter reviewer found the whole dress heavy and long. With so few reviews to go on, treat the fit notes as early evidence rather than a settled view.

Suits you if

  • You want a dress that reads as smart at work
  • You feel the cold and want weight in the fabric

Look elsewhere if

  • You prefer a waist without a fabric tie
  • You like plenty of reviews before you buy

Elsie Cashmere Crew Jumper

Pure cashmere, certified to The Good Cashmere Standard and labelled machine washable, in more colours than most shops offer across a whole knitwear range.

Stock photo

from £129Boden UK price, October 2026

The details

Fabric
100% cashmere
Fit
straight, falls between waist and hip
Sizes
XS to XL
Care
machine washable
Check price at Boden

If you are going to spend more at Boden, spend it here. The Elsie is a straight-cut crew neck in 100% cashmere, which Boden says is certified by The Good Cashmere Standard, and its care line reads machine washable rather than dry clean only. It runs from XS to XL and, when we checked, came in more than a dozen colours, from navy and black to a spiced yellow.

Reviewers are pleased with the softness and the colours. The criticisms are about shape. Several say the body is short (one reviewer at 1.75m sent it back for that reason), and a couple found the sleeves or the doubled crew neck tight. If you like a jumper to reach the hip, size up and accept the extra width.

Suits you if

  • You want real cashmere without a designer price
  • You like a wide choice of colours

Look elsewhere if

  • You are tall or long in the body
  • You want a slouchy, oversized shape
5Best for smart coats

Aylesford Wool Coat

A slim, fully lined tailored coat that stops on the thigh, with a fabric composition that changes depending on which colour you pick.

Stock photo

from £219Boden UK price, October 2026

The details

Fabric (black)
80% wool, 20% polyamide
Fabric (check)
52% wool, plus polyester, acrylic and polyamide
Fit
slim, falls on the thigh
Care
dry clean only
Check price at Boden

The Aylesford is Boden’s blazer-shaped wool coat: slim, fully lined and thigh-length, with a back pleat and pockets tacked shut until you unpick them. It comes in petite, regular and long. Read the composition before you choose a colour. When we checked, the plain black was 80% wool and 20% polyamide at £219, while the yellow and maroon check cost £269 and was 52% wool, with polyester, acrylic and polyamide making up the rest.

Owners rate the fit and finish highly, and the reviews repeat one piece of advice: size up if you want a jumper underneath. Others say the colours look more muted in person than on screen, and one was surprised to find no spare button. It is dry clean only.

Suits you if

  • You want a smart coat to wear over office clothes
  • You will choose a plain colour with more wool in it

Look elsewhere if

  • You need a coat for real cold or heavy rain
  • You would rather not pay for dry cleaning
6Best for children

Warrior Knee Joggers

All-cotton joggers with a second layer of fabric over the knees, made for children who spend half the day on the floor.

Stock photo

from £25Boden UK price, October 2026

The details

Fabric

Waist
fully elasticated, with drawstring
Sizes (navy)
2-3 years to 13-14 years
Care
machine washable
Check price at Boden

Mini Boden is where the brand has the fewest caveats, and these joggers show why. They are 100% cotton, with a fully elasticated waist and a drawstring that works, side pockets, a back pocket and the reinforced knee panels that give them their name. The navy pair runs from 2-3 years to 13-14 years, and some colours start smaller.

Parents mostly describe them as sturdy, and several buy them again and again. The low ratings are blunt, though: a few say the knees, the whole point, ripped after two or three wears. Others find the fit slim and small, so size up for a sturdier child or one who likes room to move. There is no fleece lining, which makes them a three-season trouser rather than a winter one.

Suits you if

  • Your child kneels, crawls or slides in everything
  • You prefer cotton to polyester fleece

Look elsewhere if

  • Your child likes a roomy, baggy fit
  • You need a warm winter trouser

Brushed Cotton Pyjama Shirt

A piped, brushed-cotton pyjama shirt in a Boden print, sold on its own; the matching trousers are a separate £49 item.

£49Boden UK price, October 2026

The details

Fabric
100% brushed cotton
Fit
relaxed, falls on the upper thigh
Sizes
4 to 22
Sold as
shirt only, trousers separate
Check price at Boden

Brushed cotton is the right fabric for a cold bedroom, and Boden’s version comes with proper piping, a button front and the house prints, such as the emerald Flourishing Tiger. It is 100% cotton, machine washable and relaxed in fit, in sizes 4 to 22. Wrapped up, it looks more considered than most pyjamas at the price.

Now the catch, which is also the most common complaint in the reviews. This is a shirt, not a set. Several buyers only found out on Christmas morning that the trousers were missing, and others could not get the matching half in their size. Put the Brushed Cotton Pyjama Trousers in the basket at the same time. Reviews also disagree on sizing: some found it tight across the bust and wrists, others roomy.

Suits you if

  • You are buying a present and will add the trousers
  • You want cotton nightwear rather than fleece

Look elsewhere if

  • You expected a full pyjama set for £49

Why buy from Boden?

Boden’s case rests on three things the high street rarely puts together: colour and print that few rivals attempt, cuts offered in petite, regular and long, and free UK returns with a 365-day quality guarantee behind them. For dresses and children’s clothes at this price, that combination is hard to beat.

Rivals win elsewhere. Seasalt Cornwall is quieter and stronger on knitwear, Joules does better outerwear and wellies, and Marks & Spencer is cheaper for basics and has shops you can walk into. Boden’s weak spots are consistency and price. Its Trustpilot rating was high when we checked, but the recent one- and two-star reviews include a run of complaints that sizing has tightened and fabrics have thinned, plus parcels lost or delayed with Evri. And the full prices only make sense with a code.

Before you buy: how to pick

1Pick the length before the size

Boden cuts most dresses, trousers and coats in petite, regular and long, and the difference is not just the hem: waists and sleeves move too. Reviews of the dresses in this guide keep returning to waistlines sitting high on tall buyers and hems landing low on short ones. Each product page lists the model’s height and the size she is wearing. Use that, then compare the garment measurements in the size guide with something you already own.

2Read the composition line every time

Boden’s product names do not tell you what you are buying. The Aylesford coat is 80% wool in plain black and 52% wool in the check, which costs more. Ponte dresses range from viscose-rich to mostly polyester. The composition and care lines sit in the product details, and they are the most useful words on the page. Natural fibres and heavier ponte tend to age best; thin jersey attracts most of the quality complaints.

3Never pay the first price

When we checked in October 2026, the homepage offered 25% off everything with a code, and the email sign-up promised 25% off a first full-priced order. Codes like these come round often. They exclude sale and clearance lines and gift cards, and if you return part of a discounted order you get back what you actually paid. The prices in this guide are full prices, so unless you need something this week, wait.

4Use the free returns, but watch the sale window

UK returns are free, and full-price items have 30 days from receipt. Sale items work differently: you have 14 days to register the return, then another 14 to send it. If you are torn between two sizes, ordering both and sending one back costs nothing but a trip to a drop-off point, and Try Before You Buy (run by Harper) lets you do it without paying up front.

What we'd leave on the shelf

Riding Boots

Knee-high black leather boots with a D-ring at the ankle, at £239, among the dearer things in the shop. The upper is leather but the sole is man-made, and when we checked the product page had no customer reviews at all. With nothing to go on about fit or how the leather wears, that is a lot to take on trust. A specialist shoemaker will fit you properly.

Alex Ponte Contrast Midi Dress

At £139 this ponte midi costs more than the Tie Waist dress above, and its reviews are far less settled. Some buyers found it big on top with an odd waist, others too small; one reported crooked seams, and a couple thought the fabric thin or scratchy. The Tie Waist Ponte Dress does the same job for less.

Questions people ask

Is Boden true to size?

Mostly, but less predictably than it used to be. Reviews of the pieces in this guide include buyers who found their usual size too small and others who found it too big, and recent Trustpilot complaints mention tighter sizing. Go by the garment measurements in the size guide rather than the number on the label, check the model’s height and size on each product page, and order two sizes if you are unsure. UK returns are free.

Does Boden always have a discount code running?

Not always, but often. When we checked in October 2026 the homepage carried 25% off everything with a code, and new email subscribers were offered 25% off a first full-priced order. Codes exclude sale and clearance items and gift cards. If you are not in a hurry, waiting for the next code is usually the cheapest way to buy anything on this list.

Can I try Boden clothes on before I pay?

Yes. Choose Try Before You Buy at checkout and the order is handled by a service called Harper. You have seven days from delivery to try everything, send back what you do not want through the normal free returns route, and are charged on the seventh day only for what you keep. Offer codes still apply, but gift cards and account credit cannot be used on these orders.

Does Boden still sell menswear?

Not on the UK site when we checked in October 2026. The navigation covers women, girls, boys and baby, and there was no men’s section. If you are shopping for a household, that leaves one person buying elsewhere; Marks & Spencer is the obvious high-street option for men’s basics.

If Boden isn't for you

  • Seasalt Cornwall is quieter in colour and stronger on knitwear, with a coastal rather than Home Counties feel.
  • Joules has louder prints and better wellies, padded jackets and outerwear, but fewer dresses worth buying.
  • Marks & Spencer is cheaper for basics and school-age childrenswear, with shops for trying on and returning in person.
