M&S is where Britain buys the dull things it wears most: chinos, school shirts, bras, jeans that come in four leg lengths. It suits anyone who wants fair prices, a shop nearby to return things to, and a fit they can find again next year.

That last part is the catch. This guide picks seven own-label clothes from the current UK range and reads their lowest-rated reviews closely, and the same complaint runs through almost all of them: a new pair or a new colour that fits nothing like the last one. Buy here, by all means, but check the garment on arrival, keep the receipt and use the free store returns.

The picks, one by one

1Best overall

Regular Fit Stretch Chinos

The trousers M&S is best known for, in waists from 30 to 50 and five inside-leg lengths, at a price that makes a second colour an easy decision.

These are mostly cotton with 2% elastane, cut regular, with two side pockets, a button and zip fly, and a care label that allows a machine wash and the tumble dryer. Waists run from 30 to 50 inches and inside legs come in 27, 29, 31, 33 and 35, which fits more men than most brands at twice the price bother to. They have hundreds of reviews and most read the same way: third pair, fits, washes well.

The one-star reviews are specific, though. Several buyers say a new pair came up an inch or two longer than the identical size they already owned. Others mention a plastic zip where they expected metal, and dark colours that collect fluff. The page lists an elasticated waist among the features; one reviewer found the waistband had no give at all.

Yes, if

  • You want one trouser for the office and weekends
  • You need a short or very long inside leg

No, if

  • You want a lightweight summer trouser
  • You need an elasticated waist; check the waistband before you cut the tags
2Best for women's jeans

Eva Bootcut Jeans

A stretch bootcut in sizes 6 to 24 and four leg lengths, from extra short to long, with one of the largest review counts on the site.

The Eva is slim to the knee and kicks out at the ankle, in a cotton-rich denim with polyester and a little elastane. Its strength is choice: sizes 6 to 24, each in extra short, short, regular and long. It has thousands of reviews, most of them happy. Read the page closely and it calls the rise mid in the description and high-waisted in the bullet points, so look at the model shots too.

The low ratings are almost all about consistency. Buyers who reordered their usual size, sometimes by product code, found the waist several inches smaller than their last pair, or one colour fitting and another not. Others received pairs with a pressed-in crease down the leg that would not wash out, and one had dark dye run onto white trainers in the rain. Try every pair on before the first wash.

Yes, if

  • You are petite or tall and tired of taking up hems
  • You want a bootcut that goes over ankle boots

No, if

  • You need two pairs to fit exactly alike
  • You want rigid, non-stretch denim

Jasmine Lace Wired Balcony Bra A-E

A wired, non-padded balcony bra with three-part cups and lace trims, at a price that leaves room for a second colour.

M&S still sells more bras than almost anyone on the high street, and the Jasmine is the own label at its plainest: wired, non-padded, three-part cups for lift, lace edging and a hook-and-eye back, in polyamide with elastane. Back sizes run 30 to 42 and cups A to E; a separate F to H version covers fuller busts. Hundreds of reviewers rate it well.

The critical reviews are physical rather than cosmetic. The most common complaint is the wire, either digging in between the cups or working loose after a couple of washes. A few say it comes up small, and one wondered why lace bras are no longer lined. Because underwear has to go back with its hygiene seal intact, try it on over a thin top before you remove anything, and consider a fitting in a store.

Yes, if

  • You want a cheap, unpadded everyday bra
  • You can try it on in a shop first

No, if

  • You find underwires uncomfortable
  • You need a padded or moulded cup
4Best for school uniform

3 Pack Boys’ Easy Iron School Shirts (2-16 Yrs)

Short-sleeved school shirts in a polycotton that needs only a quick press, sold in threes, with a rip-tape top button for younger children.

School uniform is where M&S earns its keep, and this three-pack is the workhorse. The shirts are 65% polyester and 35% cotton, labelled easy to iron, machine washable and fine in the tumble dryer. Sizes run from 2-3 years to 15-16 years, plus two collar sizes for older boys, and the price climbs with age. Shirts up to age 8 have Easy Close rip tape hidden behind the top button so small children can dress themselves.

That rip tape is the main complaint. Parents say it catches on other clothes in the wash and stops gripping after a few wears, leaving the collar open. Others found collars bubbling after washing, and older reviews mention thin fabric. Note that multipacks have to be returned as a whole pack.

Yes, if

  • You want shirts that come out of the dryer near wearable
  • Your child struggles with small buttons

No, if

  • You want pure cotton against the skin
  • Your child’s school requires long sleeves

Pure Cashmere Crew Neck Jumper

A regular-fit crew neck in 100% cashmere, reduced from £90 when we checked, and the M&S jumper with the most argued-over reviews.

On paper this is the best-value cashmere on the high street: 100% cashmere, a regular fit with ribbed neck, cuffs and hem, a neck-to-hem length of 58cm on a size 12, and a machine-wash care label. When we checked it was £72, down from £90 in a knitwear promotion, in sizes XS to XL.

The reviews explain why it is an upgrade with conditions. Most buyers are happy, but the one- and two-star reviews this autumn come largely from people who buy M&S cashmere every year, and they say this one is thinner and scratchier than before, with lighter colours almost see-through. Several found the body short. One reviewer thinks a change of factory is to blame; M&S does not say. Feel it in a store before you buy, or order and compare it with one you already own.

Yes, if

  • You want real cashmere for under £100
  • You will wear it over a shirt or long top

No, if

  • You are long in the body
  • You remember older M&S cashmere and expect the same weight

Pure Extra Fine Merino Wool Performance Jumper

An Autograph mock-neck jumper in pure extra fine merino that goes in the washing machine and the tumble dryer.

From the product page

Fabric
100% merino wool

Care
machine washable, can be tumble dried
Check price at Marks & Spencer

This is a quietly good piece of menswear. It is 100% merino wool with a mock neck, a little higher than a crew, and a regular fit in sizes S to 2XL. The care label says machine washable and tumble dry, which is rare for wool at any price. It is an Autograph piece, the M&S label for better fabrics, and the reviews are among the warmest of anything in this guide, though there are only a few dozen.

The weak point, in the handful of critical reviews, is bobbling: two buyers say it started to pill after a few wears and washes. One found it long in the torso and sleeves, another thinner than expected, and one received it with holes by the neck label. Popular colours sell out.

Yes, if

  • You want a wool jumper you can put in the machine
  • You prefer a higher neck to a quarter-zip

No, if

  • You want a heavy winter knit
  • You hate pilling and will not use a fabric shaver

Pyjamas are an M&S Christmas staple, and this Autograph set is the one that looks the part wrapped up: a long-sleeved button top with a revere collar and contrast piping, and bottoms with an adjustable tie waist. The fabric is a cotton and modal mix (the page gives no percentages) with the brand’s Cool Comfort finish for hot sleepers. Sizes run XS to XL, and it goes in the machine at 30 degrees.

The reviews are mostly kind, but the complaints are consistent. Several buyers say it shrank after one wash, even following the label, and others found the trousers very wide or much longer than an older version of the same set. Because sizing is uncertain, include a gift receipt.

Yes, if

  • You are buying for someone who runs hot at night
  • You want a full set in one box

No, if

  • The recipient is short and dislikes wide legs

Marks & Spencer against the rest

M&S wins on three things no online rival can copy: a store in most towns, free returns by post or over a counter, and a size range that runs from extra-short jeans to 50-inch chino waists. For basics, school uniform and underwear, that combination is still the safest in Britain.

Rivals win on consistency and service. Uniqlo’s basics change less from year to year, and John Lewis’s own label has better service reviews. M&S’s Trustpilot profile, unclaimed and not invited, sat at 1.8 when we read it, with recent one-star reviews about click and collect delays, Evri deliveries and phone queues. And the theme running through the product reviews is batch variation: the same size in a new colour or a new season fitting differently. The website also sells other brands, including FatFace and White Stuff, so check the label before you assume it is M&S.

Working out which one is yours

1Buy the length, then the size

M&S sells more leg lengths than almost anyone. The chinos come in five inside legs and the Eva jeans in four lengths from extra short to long, and the length is chosen as a second size on the product page. Measure the inside leg of a pair you like rather than relying on the label, because reviewers report new pairs coming up an inch or two longer than old ones in the same size.

2Check each new batch on arrival

The most common one-star review across this guide is not about quality but about repeatability: the same jeans, chinos or pyjamas in the same size fitting differently from the last pair, or one colour fitting while another does not. Try everything on before washing or cutting labels, compare it with what you already own, and send back anything that does not match. The free store returns make this cheap.

3Autograph is the better fabric line

M&S runs several labels under one roof. M&S Collection is the everyday range; Autograph is described as premium fabrics and finishing, and in this guide covers the merino jumper and the pyjama set. Read the composition line rather than trusting the label, though: the cashmere jumper’s page names Autograph as the brand and M&S Collection in the description.

4Time knitwear and coats to the promotions

When we checked in October 2026, the site was running 20% off selected women’s knitwear and coats, which is why the cashmere jumper was £72 rather than £90. Sparks members also get personalised offers. Knitwear promotions recur through the autumn, so a jumper seen at full price in September is often cheaper by late October. Remember that sale purchases have a shorter returns window than full-price ones: 14 days to tell M&S, then 14 more to send them back.

The ones we passed over

2 Pack Unisex Pure Cotton School Jumper (3-18 Yrs)

The page promises StayNEW technology to reduce bobbling and colour loss, and pure cotton is the right fibre for school. But this pack draws far more one-star reviews than the shirts: jumpers described as thin enough to see through, holes under the arms within a term, seams splitting, and dark colours shedding fluff onto white shirts. Buy one pack and inspect it before the term starts.

FAQs

Is M&S sizing consistent?

Not reliably, on the evidence of its own reviews. The lowest-rated reviews of the chinos, the Eva jeans, the cashmere jumper and the pyjamas all include buyers who reordered a size they knew and received something longer, shorter or several inches tighter. The garments themselves are mostly well reviewed. Try each new purchase on before washing it, and use a store for returns, where they are processed within a day.

Can I return an online M&S order to a shop?

Yes. Online orders can go back free to M&S stores, except those in railway stations, hospitals and service stations, and the returns page says clothing should go to a Fashion, Home & Beauty store. Outlet purchases can only go back to an outlet. Start the return in your account first to get a barcode.

Are the FatFace and White Stuff clothes on the M&S site made by M&S?

No. M&S now sells a list of other brands on its website, including FatFace, White Stuff, Monsoon, Hush and Whistles, under a Brands menu. They are those brands’ own products. The M&S promotional codes we saw excluded Brands at M&S, so a 20% Sparks offer may not apply to them.

Is the M&S cashmere still worth buying?

At £72 it is cheap for pure cashmere, and most reviewers are pleased. But a noticeable share of this autumn’s reviews come from long-standing buyers who say it is thinner and scratchier than earlier years. If you have an older one to compare against, order it, compare, and use the returns window. If not, you may simply find it good value.

Alternatives worth a look

  • Uniqlo is cheaper and more consistent for basic knitwear and trousers, with far fewer lengths and sizes.
  • John Lewis covers the same basics with better service reviews, though with fewer shops for returns.
  • FatFace is stronger on relaxed weekend cotton, and is sold on the M&S website as well as its own.
