Six Matalan buys worth your money this autumn, from £15 men’s jeans with 187 reviews behind them to washable winter coats, plus the leopard-print jeans whose reviews say to stay away.

Matalan is the out-of-town value chain that dresses families on a budget: men’s jeans for £15, coats under £50, work shoes, school uniform and a large homeware side. It suits anyone buying basics in volume, and anyone who wants a coat they can put in the washing machine.
This guide picks six things from the current UK range, plus one we would leave on the shelf. The headline advice: Matalan’s best buys are its plain, long-running lines with hundreds of reviews, not the seasonal trend pieces. Read the reviews sorted lowest first, and return in a shop, because postal returns are not free.
These are from Easy, Matalan’s own casual menswear range, and they were the most-reviewed jeans we found in the men’s section. They are a classic straight fit with five pockets and a zip fly, in a cotton-rich denim (72% cotton, 26% polyester, 2% elastane) that washes at 30°C. Inside legs are 30, 32 and 34 inches. When we looked, the average rating was 4.6 out of 5 from 187 reviews, and the page showed them at £12 during a 20%-off event.
The one-star reviews share a theme: the zip is short and the rise lower than buyers expected, which several found awkward. Others say two pairs in the same size fitted differently, and one long-time buyer found new pairs had pale patches at the knee that the photos do not show.
Pick it if
You want plain jeans for under £20
You need a 30-inch or 34-inch leg
Pass if
You prefer a high rise and long fly
2Best value
Navy Soft Touch Crew Neck Jumper
A lightweight crew-neck jumper in soft acrylic for £12, which most of its reviewers bought again in another colour.
This is the plainest possible jumper: navy, crew neck, long sleeves, in a soft-touch 100% acrylic that goes in the washing machine. Reviews are short and mostly happy, with buyers ordering it in several colours and as a cheap gift. It averaged 4.75 from 16 reviews when we checked.
Acrylic is the trade-off. It is light and soft but not warm in the way wool is, and it tends to bobble with wear. The one one-star review says it has no shape at all. Small sign of care on the page, too: the navy jumper’s description praises its “sleek black finish”, so trust the photos and colour name over the copy.
Pick it if
You want a layer under a coat for £12
You buy basics in several colours
Pass if
You want warmth or natural fibres
3Best for work shoes
Soleflex Black Real Leather Apron Shoes
Black leather slip-ons with elasticated gussets and cushioned insocks from Matalan’s Soleflex comfort range, bought for jobs and school.
Soleflex is Matalan’s comfort footwear line, and these are its leather slip-on apron shoes: leather upper, elasticated side gussets so they go on without laces, a cushioned, breathable insock and a chunky sole. Care is wipe clean only. Reviews average 4.4 from 27 and include parents who have rebought them several times for a son’s school and first job.
The low-rated reviews are specific. One buyer found the heels hard and uncomfortable even after wearing them in, another that the leather wrinkled badly within weeks, and a parent could not get a son’s foot in at the usual size. Another said they rubbed a heel raw before settling. Try them in store if you can.
Pick it if
You want leather work shoes for under £40
You prefer slip-ons to laces
Pass if
You have a high instep
You want a soft heel from day one
4Best for smart coats
Burgundy Longline Belted Wrap Coat
A long women’s wrap coat with an oversized lapel and soft-touch fabric that, unusually, goes in the washing machine.
Wrap coats usually mean dry cleaning. This one is machine washable: the main fabric is 90% polyester and 10% viscose with a polyester lining. It is a relaxed, longline coat with an oversized lapel collar and a belt, in a rich burgundy. The few reviews so far are warm about the look and comfort.
Length is the problem. A 5ft 1in reviewer said it nearly touched her ankles and she might return it; a 5ft 10in reviewer said it is long even on her and wished Matalan offered different lengths. It does not. There is no wool in it either, so it will look smarter than it is warm. Three reviews is thin evidence, so treat these as early warnings.
Pick it if
You are tall and want a long coat
You want a smart coat you can wash at home
Pass if
You are petite
You want wool-level warmth
5Best for cold commutes
Black Mid Length Padded Hooded Coat
A mid-length, hooded padded coat with a toggle waist and zip-and-popper front, new this season and machine washable.
This is the sensible women’s winter coat in the current range: mid length, padded, hooded, with an adjustable toggle waist, front pockets and a zip covered by poppers. The shell is polyamide and the lining and filling are polyester, and the whole thing is machine washable.
It is new in, and there were no reviews when we looked, so there is no evidence yet on fit, warmth or how the shell wears. Matalan gives no fill weight or water resistance, describing it only as delivering cosy insulation. Polyester filling is generally bulkier than down for the same warmth. If you are unsure of the size, use free Click & Collect over £19.99 and try it in store.
Pick it if
You want a hooded, practical coat under £50
You want a waist that can be drawn in
Pass if
You want reviews before you buy
6Also great
Black Mid Length Showerproof Puffer Coat
A men’s hooded, mid-length padded coat with a full zip, in washable polyester, for well under £50.
The men’s equivalent is a mid-length black puffer with a hood, long sleeves and a full zip, in 100% polyester. Mid length matters on a cheap padded coat: it covers the hips, which is where shorter puffers let the cold in. It is machine washable, which suits a coat worn every day through winter.
The word “showerproof” sits in the name but nowhere else: the description gives no water resistance rating and no detail on taped seams, so treat it as fine for drizzle rather than a downpour. There were no reviews when we looked. It also arrived without the fill or warmth detail that would let you compare it with an outdoor brand’s jacket.

Before you buy: how to pick
1Buy the lines with the most reviews
Matalan’s product reviews are public and can be sorted lowest first. The difference between lines is stark: the dark-wash straight jeans in this guide averaged 4.6 from 187 reviews, while a leopard-print wide-leg jean averaged 1.4 from 11, nearly all about seams tearing. Long-running basics have a track record you can read; new-season trend pieces are where the gambles are.
2Do not pay full price online
When we checked, Matalan was running 20% off almost everything online, and product pages showed the reduced price alongside a recommended price. Events like this recur, and the prices in this guide are the full recommended ones. If you are not in a hurry, wait for the next event, then add a free Click & Collect over £19.99 to avoid the delivery charge.
3Check the length on long coats
Matalan sells most coats in one length, unlike chains that offer petite and tall cuts. Reviews of the longline wrap coat came from a 5ft 1in buyer who found it near her ankles and a 5ft 10in buyer who found it long. Read reviewers’ heights where they give them, and if you are under about 5ft 4in, favour the mid-length styles.
Why Matalan, and why not
Matalan’s case is price and reach. Its basics are cheap (£15 jeans, a £12 jumper), its long-running lines carry hundreds of reviews, and its shops are big enough to try things on and return online orders free. Click & Collect is free over £19.99, and home delivery over £49.99. Its Trustpilot score was 4.1 out of 5 from about 178,000 reviews when we read it.
The recent one-star reviews are mostly about Evri parcels that went missing or stalled, Click & Collect orders cancelled without notice, and refunds that took longer than buyers wanted. Matalan also sells other brands, from Regatta and Cotton Traders to furniture shipped by its suppliers, so check whose product you are buying. New Look is more fashion-led for women; Tu is the rival for family basics.
Not on our list, and why
Chocolate Brown Leopard Print Mid Rise Wide Leg Comfort Jeans
They look good and the elasticated drawstring waist is comfortable, but the reviews are among the worst we read: an average of 1.4 from 11. Buyer after buyer says the seam by the pocket tore on the first or second wear, and others found white lines after one wash at 30°C. The fabric is 100% lyocell, which suits a soft drape more than daily wear.

In a shop, yes: take online orders back to any Matalan store, except its clearance stores, within 28 days of receiving them. By post, no. Matalan’s returns page says it does not offer free postal returns unless the item is faulty or damaged, and it does not exchange by post. Electrical and large home items cannot go back to stores at all and need a collection arranged.
Is Matalan clothing good quality for the price?
For established basics, mostly. The men’s straight jeans and the Soleflex shoes in this guide average well over 4 out of 5 from dozens or hundreds of reviews. Quality is patchier on trend lines: the leopard-print comfort jeans we skip here drew repeated reports of seams tearing by the second wear. Read the composition too; much of the range is polyester or acrylic.
Does Matalan sell other brands?
Yes. Alongside its own labels, such as Easy denim and Soleflex shoes, it sells brands including Regatta, Cotton Traders, Yours and Clarks, and furniture from suppliers that ship direct with a £10 delivery charge. The returns page has separate instructions for items from other brands, so check them before you order.
Rivals worth a look
New Look is more trend-led for women, with five leg lengths on its best jeans but paid postal returns too.
Tu at Sainsbury’s sells own-label family basics and school uniform in selected Sainsbury’s stores, so it can go in with the food shop.
