New Look sits at the budget end of the high-street fashion chains, below River Island on most of the prices we compared, and its jeans and boots are the reason to go. It suits anyone dressing on a tight budget who wants this season’s shapes, and it is unusually good for shorter and taller women, because its best-selling jeans come in five leg lengths.

This guide picks seven things from the current UK range. The short version: buy the denim and the boots, take a hard look at what the coats are made of, and return in a shop rather than by post. Delivery is cheap, but the online customer service is the weak spot, and most of the complaints we read are about it rather than the clothes.

Blue Adalae High Waisted Wide Leg Jeans

The Adalae is the jean New Look builds its denim range around, and it comes in a long run of colours, from black and blue to red and cream. This blue version is high waisted and full length, with a relaxed, wide leg, classic five pockets and a zip fly. The fabric is 100% cotton, described as non-stretch, and it goes in the washing machine. The size list runs from 4 to 22, with inside legs of 26, 28, 30, 32 and 34 inches, so most people can get a hem that skims the floor without alterations.

Rigid cotton is the trade-off. There is no give at the waist, so the fit in the changing room is the fit for good, and a size 22 is not offered in the shortest leg. Wide, full-length hems also pick up wet pavement on a rainy commute.

Yes, if

  • You are short or tall and want a proper hem
  • You prefer rigid denim to stretch

No, if

  • You want stretch at the waist
  • You need a size 22 in a 26-inch leg

Black Regular Straight Leg Jeans

This is about as plain as a pair of jeans gets: mid rise, regular fit, straight leg, five pockets and a zip fly, in 100% cotton non-stretch denim. The price is the headline, but the size spread is the better reason to buy. The product page lists waists from 24 to 46, each in short, regular and long, so very slim and larger men are both covered.

The weaknesses come with the price. Black cotton denim with no stretch fades with washing and will feel stiff for the first few wears. The model is 6ft 4in and wears a 32R, which says little about how a short leg falls on a shorter man. New Look’s product reviews would not load for us, so there is little fit evidence beyond the size guide.

Yes, if

  • You want a black jean for under £30
  • You need a small or large waist

No, if

  • You want stretch or a slim leg

Black Hannah Cotton Rich Straight Leg Jeans

The Hannah is the quieter alternative to the Adalae: a mid-rise, relaxed straight leg cut to ankle length, which New Look pitches at the office as much as the weekend. The denim is 79% cotton and 20% recycled cotton, with 1% elastane for a little give, and it is machine washable. Like the Adalae, it runs from size 4 to 22 with five leg lengths.

Two cautions. Ankle-length is a deliberate crop, so if you choose a longer leg to cover your ankles you may lose the shape the cut is designed around. And 1% elastane is barely any stretch; treat it as a rigid jean when choosing a size. Like any black denim, expect it to fade with washing, so wash it inside out and cool.

Yes, if

  • You want a black jean that works with a blouse
  • You like a cropped straight leg

No, if

  • You want a full-length leg

Most cheap long coats need dry cleaning. This one does not: the shell, lining and wadding are all polyester and the care line says machine washable, which matters on a coat that meets mud and rain. It is longline, quilted and hooded, with a tie belt, press-stud fastening and side pockets, in sizes 4 to 22. When we looked it was marked down from £49.99.

Read the word “lightly” in the description, though. New Look calls the coat lightly padded, and gives no fill weight or warmth rating, so it is a coat for a British autumn and mild winter rather than a hard frost. Press studs are quicker than a zip but let wind through at the gaps, and the belt is fabric, which crumples rather than holds a shape.

Yes, if

  • You want a long coat you can wash at home
  • You want a hood on a city coat

No, if

  • You need real warmth for very cold days
  • You want a zip fastening

Premium Real Leather Tan Ankle Boots

Tan suede ankle boots with a low stacked heel and side zip, from New Look’s Premium footwear line: the most expensive pick here, and the most durable.

New Look’s Premium collection is where it uses real leather, and these boots show what the extra money buys. The upper is split cow suede, with a round toe, a low stacked heel and a side zip, plus the comfort features New Look lists across the range: cushioned padding, softer linings and flexible soles.

The leather stops at the upper. The insole is polyurethane and the lining is a polyester and polyurethane mix, so they will not breathe like a fully leather boot. Tan suede also needs a protector spray before the first wet day and marks easily. At close to £70 they cost £26 more than the faux leather sock boot below, so they make sense only if you will wear them for more than one season.

Yes, if

  • You want real suede without a department-store price
  • You prefer a low heel for walking

No, if

  • You will not treat and brush suede

Black block-heel ankle boots fill a large part of New Look’s boot range, and this is a good current version. It has a close sock shape, an almond toe, a side zip, gold-tone hardware and a 65mm block heel, which is high enough to dress up trousers and low enough for a day on your feet. The product page says it is registered with The Vegan Society and made with New Look’s Comfort features.

The care guide lists the upper, lining and sole only as “Other”, which tells you nothing about what you are buying. A sock fit is snug by design, so anyone with a wide foot or high instep should look at New Look’s separate wide-fit range instead. Faux leather tends to crease at the flex point and cannot be polished back.

Yes, if

  • You want a mid heel for office days
  • You want vegan footwear

No, if

  • You have wide feet or a high instep

A long black coat over a jumper or a suit is the easiest smart look in menswear, and this is one of the cheapest ways to it. It is a relaxed, long coat with a collar, front flap pockets, button cuffs and a button front, in sizes from XXXS to XXXL, a wider spread than most high-street menswear. It was marked down from £59.99 when we looked.

The fabric is 100% polyester, described only as a soft woven, so it will look the part from a distance but will not insulate like a wool overcoat. The upside is the care label: machine washable, where River Island’s polyester overcoat, for one, is dry clean only. Expect it to bobble where a bag strap rubs.

Yes, if

  • You want a long coat for under £50
  • You are a very small or very large size

No, if

  • You want wool and real warmth

How to choose

1Choose the leg length as carefully as the size

The Adalae and Hannah jeans list sizes like 12L30: dress size, then inside leg in inches, from 26 to 34. Measure the inside leg of a pair you already like, from crotch seam to hem, and pick the nearest length. Ankle-length styles such as the Hannah are cropped by design, so do not size up the leg to cover the ankle. Men’s jeans use short, regular and long instead.

2Check whether it is real leather

Most New Look footwear is faux leather or faux suede, and some care guides list the materials only as “Other”. Real leather sits in a separate Premium collection and says so in the product name. The difference shows after a winter: faux leather creases and cannot be polished back, while suede can be brushed and re-proofed. If you want a boot for one season, faux is fine; for three, pay for Premium.

3Make your order clear the £50 line

Free standard delivery needs £50 of full-price or promotional items, and sale items do not count towards it. Click & Collect to a New Look store is listed as free in the help centre, which is the simplest route under the threshold. If you shop often, the £19.99 Delivery Pass also covers free UK returns, which otherwise cost money unless you take them to a shop.

Where New Look wins, and where rivals do

New Look wins on price and on length. Its women’s jeans come in five leg lengths across sizes 4 to 22, its men’s jeans go up to a 46 waist, and many coats here are machine washable. Standard delivery is cheap, and online orders can go back to any UK store free.

The weak side is service. New Look’s Trustpilot score was 2.4 out of 5 from about 9,500 reviews when we read it, and the one-star reviews from October 2026 are almost all about Evri parcels marked delivered that never arrived, items missing from orders, slow refunds and a customer service channel that starts with a virtual assistant and replies by email. River Island also charges for postal returns, but it lists a phone number, which New Look’s contact page does not put first.

Quick questions

Are New Look returns free?

Free if you take them to a UK New Look store, whether you bought online or in a shop; you generate a QR code on the returns portal first. Sending a return by InPost or Evri costs money, deducted as a fee (one recent reviewer cites £2.95). Delivery Pass holders get free UK returns. Refunds are processed within 14 calendar days of the parcel arriving, then take 3 to 5 working days to appear.

Can New Look stop me ordering if I return too much?

Yes. Its returns policy now includes a High Returns Policy: New Look says a small group of customers repeatedly return a high proportion of their orders, that it will write to those affected, and that if nothing changes over a set period it may stop them ordering. Ordering two sizes now and then is not the target, but habitual bracketing could be.

Does New Look sell other brands?

Yes, alongside its own label. The returns policy keeps a separate list of third-party brand items sold online, which can be refunded free in store or by a paid drop-off, except from the Channel Islands, where they must go back to the warehouse. Everything picked in this guide is New Look’s own brand.

If New Look isn't for you

  • River Island is more trend-led and offers short, regular and long legs, but charges £2.95 to post a return.
  • Matalan is plainer and more family-focused, with homeware alongside the clothes and a membership scheme for offers.
  • Marks & Spencer is dearer and more classic, the safer choice for workwear basics and underwear.
