George is Asda’s clothing and homeware label, and for a great many families it is simply where school uniform comes from. It also sells women’s, men’s and children’s clothes, bedding and a growing range of other brands, online and in Asda stores.

This guide picks six George-brand products, four of them with hundreds or thousands of reviews, and reads the lowest ratings first. The short advice: George is at its best on basics and uniform, its fabric details deserve a close read, and the 100-day satisfaction guarantee on George-brand clothes is the reason to buy here rather than anywhere else.

Grey Half Elastic Boys School Trouser 2 Pack

This is George doing what it does best. The two-pack has a regular leg, a permanent front crease, side pockets, a half-elastic waist and reinforced knees, in a polyester and viscose fabric treated with Teflon for stain release. Smaller sizes have a mock fly, while 7-8 years and up get a proper zip and hook. With more than 2,500 reviews and an average well above four stars, few uniform items have a clearer verdict.

The complaints are a minority but they repeat. Some parents found the waist small and tight even with the elastic, one said the grey is so dark it looks black, and another found the next age up no longer than the last. A few opened a two-pack with only one pair inside, and several chased refunds after returning.

Yes, if

  • You need several pairs for a whole school week
  • Your child kneels and slides at playtime

No, if

  • Your child has a larger waist; consider a plus fit

White Short Sleeve School Polo Shirts 5 Pack

Five all-cotton school polos with a stain-release finish for less than many shops charge for one, in white up to 15-16 years.

Five polo shirts for the price of a sandwich is the deal that keeps parents coming back. They are 100% cotton with a button placket, a stain-release finish and a “stay white” claim on the white colourway, which runs up to 15-16 years; colours stop at 13-14. They can be tumble dried. The product had more than 1,400 reviews and a rating close to five stars when we checked.

Read the recent one-star reviews, though, because they tell a story of change. Several long-time buyers say the cotton has become thinner, scratchier and longer in the body, one noting her autistic daughter could no longer bear the texture. Others found shirts turning yellow after a 30-degree wash, and one said a pack shrank noticeably within weeks.

Yes, if

  • You need five tops at the lowest possible price
  • You want cotton rather than polyester

No, if

  • Your child is sensitive to rough fabric
  • You need them to stay bright white all year

Dark Tint Straight Fit Jeans With Stretch

Straight-fit men’s jeans in cotton with a touch of stretch, with a zip fly, for less than a cinema ticket.

George’s men’s range is a place to buy basics, and at £9 when we checked these are about as basic and cheap as jeans get. They are a straight fit in 99% cotton and 1% elastane, with belt loops, a button and zip fly, three front pockets and two back pockets. George advises washing denim inside out without fabric softener, and they should not be tumble dried.

The reviews are unanimous five stars, praising fit, value and the zip fly over a button one, but there are only seven, all from early 2025, so treat them as thin evidence rather than a verdict. The price suggests this may be a reduced line, so colours and sizes may not last. Expect a light, everyday denim rather than heavy, rigid cloth.

Yes, if

  • You want spare or work jeans for under £10
  • You prefer a zip fly

No, if

  • You want heavyweight, rigid denim
  • You need plenty of reviews before buying

Cream Funnel Neck Cable Knitted Jumper with Wool

This season’s George knitwear leans on cable and Fair Isle, and this cream funnel neck is the most wearable of it: a ribbed funnel collar, dropped shoulders, long cuffed sleeves and a chunky cable front. It is machine washable and should not go in the dryer.

Its weakness is in the composition line. “With wool” means 10% wool; the rest is 41% nylon, 30% polyester, 16% acrylic and 3% elastane. That keeps the price at £24 and makes it easy to wash, but it will not breathe or keep warm like a wool-rich jumper, and synthetic knits of this kind tend to pill. It had no customer reviews when we checked, so fit is unknown. Order two sizes and use the 100-day guarantee to return one.

Yes, if

  • You want the cable-knit look under £25
  • You want a jumper you can machine wash

No, if

  • You want real wool warmth
  • You hate pilling

A short padded coat is the useful middle layer between a mac and a winter parka, and George’s costs £25. It has a funnel neck, a toggle hood, a zip front and two zip pockets, in 100% nylon, and unusually for a padded coat it can be tumble dried. One reviewer bought it for a daughter who dislikes heavy coats and found it warm enough for school.

The weakness is the rain claim. The only one-star review says the coat is neither waterproof nor showerproof and that its owner was soaked several times, after the return window had closed. With three reviews in total the evidence is thin, but “shower resistant” is a weaker promise than waterproof. Treat it as a coat for dry cold days and drizzle.

Yes, if

  • You want a light, packable warm layer
  • You need a coat for under £30

No, if

  • You walk in real rain

George Home’s winter bedding is where it competes with Dunelm on price, and this faux-fur set is the most-liked of its current winter range. It is polyester with a jumbo-stripe jacquard faux-fur top, popper fastening and, according to reviewers, a soft velvety or fleecy back. It comes in single (135 x 200cm) through to super king (260 x 220cm) and is washable at 30C.

Washing is the problem. One owner says the set melted together in places after 15 minutes on low heat in the dryer, even though the label allows tumble drying. Another says it was too heavy for a new washing machine to spin. Line drying is the safe route, which needs space and time in winter.

Yes, if

  • You want a heavy, warm-feeling duvet cover
  • You like a textured, hotel-style look

No, if

  • You rely on a tumble dryer
  • Your washing machine is small

Where George at ASDA wins, and where rivals do

George’s case is price plus a long guarantee. George-brand clothes and homeware carry a 100-day satisfaction guarantee, against 30 days on other brands it sells, and most items can go back free to an Asda store. For school uniform in particular, the volume of reviews and the cost per item are hard to argue with.

Rivals win on consistency. Marks & Spencer uniform is pricier but has fewer complaints about thin fabric, and Next and Primark compete on fashion at similar prices. George’s weakness is service. Its Trustpilot score was 1.2 from a few thousand reviews when we checked, and the newest one-star reviews describe lost Evri deliveries, click and collect orders that never reached the store, wrong items in parcels and refunds that took months. Collecting in store reduces that risk.

Before you buy: how to pick

1Check the brand line before you buy

George’s site now sells other brands alongside its own, such as Silentnight and Slumberdown in bedding. The 100-day satisfaction guarantee only applies to George brand clothes and homeware; everything else gets 30 days. If you are buying a present or are unsure about fit, a George-brand item gives you more than three months to change your mind, while a branded duvet bought alongside it must go back within a month.

2Read the fabric line, not the product name

George names are descriptive but generous. The cream cable jumper is “with wool” at 10% wool. The faux-fur duvet set says it can be tumble dried, yet a reviewer’s melted in the dryer. Open the fabric details and care section on every page; it takes ten seconds and answers most of the questions the reviews raise, from warmth to whether a jumper will pill.

3Buy uniform early and check every pack

The recurring uniform complaints are about packs, not just fabric: a two-pack with one pair, polos in the wrong size on the hanger, a colour that did not match. Open packs as soon as they arrive, keep the tags on until your child has tried everything, and buy in early summer so there is time to swap before September. The 100-day guarantee makes that easy.

The ones we passed over

Black Slim Leg Boys School Trousers 2 Pack

Well rated overall, but the newest one-star reviews describe a redesign with pockets too small for a hand or a phone, and several parents found both pairs split along the seam under the zip after a single wear. For an older child who carries a phone, that is a deal breaker. The regular-leg grey pack above has fewer of these complaints.

Your questions, answered

How long do I have to return George clothes?

George’s product pages state a 100-day satisfaction guarantee on George brand clothes and homeware and 30 days on everything else. Most items go back free to an Asda store, except Asda Express shops. Keep tags on and packs complete; one parent in this guide regretted cutting the tags before checking the length. Faulty items are also covered by your statutory rights.

Is George school uniform good quality?

For the price, mostly yes, judging by thousands of reviews averaging well above four stars. The recent low ratings are worth reading, though. Parents report thinner, scratchier polo shirts, trousers splitting at the seams and, on one slim-leg style, pockets too small to fit a hand. Checking every pack and trying everything on as soon as it arrives catches most problems in time.

Can I collect George orders at any Asda?

Click and collect is free and usually ready within three days, but availability depends on the location and the item: some products are delivery-only. Recent Trustpilot reviews describe orders marked ready at Asda Express sites that staff could not find, so choose a larger store if you can and bring your order email.

Rivals worth a look

  • Marks & Spencer costs more for school uniform and basics but draws fewer complaints about thin fabric and weak seams.
  • Very offers a similar 100-day guarantee on its own school uniform, with home delivery and no stores.
