John Lewis sells thousands of other brands, but its own label is where the shop’s reputation is made or lost: the pans, towels and bedding that sit in most British homes for a decade.

This guide picks six own-brand products with live UK pages, prices read on johnlewis.com in October 2026, and each pick’s weakness taken from its one- to three-star on-site reviews. The pattern across those reviews is consistent. The cookware is well liked, with specific design gripes. The textiles draw complaints that quality has slipped compared with older versions. And bedding sits on the returns page’s hygiene list, so decide before you open the packet.

This is the strongest own-brand product we found. The set holds 16cm, 18cm and 20cm saucepans with matching steel lids, built from five layers of 18/10 stainless steel and aluminium to heat evenly on any hob, including induction. They are dishwasher safe, oven safe to 200°C and carry a lifetime guarantee. On-site reviews averaged 4.5 from 101 when we read them, with only four at one or two stars.

The complaints are about design. Several low-rated reviewers say the flat lids have no steam vent, so water escapes across the hob, and that lid handles get too hot to hold. Others report water marks and stains that are hard to shift, and one two-star owner says the exposed rim wore after two years, leaving sharp edges.

Pick it if

  • You cook on induction and want pans for decades
  • You prefer uncoated steel to non-stick

Pass if

  • You want glass lids to watch the pan

These are the towels John Lewis calls its best-selling, with nearly 2,900 on-site reviews averaging 4.3. The pile is certified Egyptian cotton at 700gsm, which the page puts among its plushest, with a peppermint-based finish meant to keep them fresher. Prices run from £6 for a pair of face cloths to £28, across 28 colours.

The recent low-rated reviews are hard to ignore. Since the summer of 2026, a run of one- and two-star reviewers report towels shedding fluff after repeated washes, especially in darker colours, and several say the quality has dropped compared with older John Lewis towels. Others report fraying hems, pulls after a week, and a bath towel more than 10cm narrower than the one it replaced.

Pick it if

  • You want a heavy, absorbent towel at high-street prices
  • You need lots of colours to match

Pass if

  • You are buying a dark colour and hate lint
3Best for searing

5-Ply Thermacore Stainless Steel Uncoated Frying Pan

If you want a frying pan without a coating, this is the Thermacore range’s answer: the same five-layer stainless steel and aluminium construction as the saucepans, riveted handles, induction compatibility and oven safety to 200°C. It comes in 20cm, 24cm and 28cm, though the largest was unavailable when we looked. The guarantee is 10 years, not the saucepans’ lifetime cover.

Read the low reviews before buying. Most one-star reviewers say everything sticks, even after following the instructions, and one notes that how to use a stainless pan was not explained on the John Lewis page. That is partly the nature of uncoated steel, which needs heat and oil. A smaller group report the base bowing within months, which is a fault, not technique.

Pick it if

  • You are happy learning to cook on bare steel
  • You want a pan that can go in the oven

Pass if

  • You mostly cook eggs and want them to slide
4Best for crisp bedding

Egyptian Cotton Percale Easy Care 260 Thread Count Bedding

This is the newer of John Lewis’s two Egyptian cotton percale ranges, and the one we would choose: the older Crisp & Fresh 200 thread count line was marked Reduced to Clear in the colours we checked. The 260 thread count percale is woven for a smooth, crisp finish with an easy-care treatment to reduce ironing. Duvet sets include pillowcases: one with a single, two with larger sizes.

Only 18 on-site reviews so far, averaging 4.2, and the low ones are specific. One September reviewer found it thinner than the 200 thread count set they owned. Another found the pillowcase envelope too shallow to hold the pillow in, and a third says the pillowcases come out of the dryer crumpled despite the easy-care claim.

Pick it if

  • You like a cool, matt percale rather than sateen
  • You want sets rather than separates

Pass if

  • You want ironing-free bedding

This duvet is filled with 90% British duck down and 10% feather, certified to the Responsible Down Standard, in a 230 thread count cotton cover with box construction to keep the filling spread out. It is made in the UK, washable at 40°C and treated with Nomite for dust mite allergy sufferers. Prices run from £140 for a single to £210 for the largest size, with a five-year guarantee.

The smell is the main complaint. John Lewis’s own page warns of a slight odour and suggests airing for 48 hours, but four low-rated reviewers since 2024 describe a strong, lingering smell; one returned it. Two others say the down migrated into lumps or to one side after two to three years.

  • You want natural down that is made in Britain
  • You can air it for a few days first

This is a polyester-filled standard pillow with HeiQ Allergen Tech, a treatment John Lewis says uses naturally derived probiotics to break down dust mite matter, pet dander and some pollen. It is machine washable at 30°C, carries a two-year guarantee and was reduced from £30 when we looked. Soft and firm versions sit alongside this medium one.

Firmness is the problem. Of 51 on-site reviews averaging 4.0, most of the low ones say the medium is now far softer or flatter than the version they bought before, with one 2025 reviewer calling the new design ‘flat as pancakes’. Another found it flat within two months. If you like support, several reviewers suggest going up to the firm.

Pick it if

  • You need a pillow you can wash at home
  • Dust or pet allergens bother you

Pass if

  • You want a lofty, supportive medium pillow

John Lewis & Partners against the rest

John Lewis’s own label is strongest where it backs products for years: a lifetime guarantee on Thermacore saucepans, five years on the down duvet, and a Price Promise that refunds the difference if 25 named retailers, including Dunelm, Lakeland and Marks and Spencer, sell the same item for less within seven days. Small items return free to a shop, by post or via Click & Collect.

Its reputation is under strain. Trustpilot showed 3.9 from about 106,000 reviews when we read it, with roughly a quarter at one star, mostly about deliveries, refunds and support rather than products. On its own site, the most common complaint about towels, bedding and pillows is that today’s versions feel thinner or softer than the ones customers bought a few years ago.

How to choose

1Check the guarantee on each product

Guarantees vary within a single range. The Thermacore saucepan set carries a lifetime guarantee, while the matching frying pan has 10 years. The British Duck Down duvet has five years and the anti-allergy pillow two. The figure sits in the product specification on each page, so read it before comparing prices with a rival, because the cheaper pan elsewhere may come with far less cover.

2Decide before you open bedding

The returns policy lists bedding among the products that cannot be returned for hygiene reasons unless faulty or not as described, alongside mattresses. Product pages say ‘free returns, restrictions apply’. One pillow reviewer tried theirs still in its packaging so it could go back; another kept one they had opened. If you are unsure about firmness or feel, judge it in a shop first or keep it sealed until you are certain.

3Read the newest reviews, not the average

Averages on long-running products hide change. The Egyptian Cotton Towels average 4.3 from nearly 2,900 reviews, yet many of the one- and two-star reviews from mid-2026 describe shedding and fraying. The anti-allergy pillow’s recent low reviews say the medium has become much softer. Sort by newest and read a page of three-star reviews, which tend to be the most specific about what changed.

4Use the Price Promise properly

The Price Promise covers identical items sold directly by one of 25 listed retailers within seven days of your order, and John Lewis’s own price drops in that window too. It excludes reduced-to-clear prices, multi-buys, members-only prices and promo-code prices, and marketplace sellers. You need a screenshot of the lower price and your order details; John Lewis aims to reply within 48 hours.

A neat, mid-century-style sofa from £999 with a 25-year frame guarantee, but its fixed seat cushions cannot be turned or plumped. Reviews averaged 3.8 from 113, and 24 one-star reviewers describe seats sagging or wrinkling within months. Returning an unwanted sofa costs £29.95 for collection.

Your questions, answered

Can I return John Lewis bedding if I change my mind?

Probably not once it is opened. The returns policy lists bedding and mattresses among products that cannot be returned for hygiene reasons unless they are faulty or not as described, even though product pages say ‘free returns, restrictions apply’. Keep pillows and duvets sealed until you are sure, and ask customer services before opening if the item is expensive.

Does John Lewis still price match?

Yes, through its Price Promise, still badged Never Knowingly Undersold. It refunds the difference if one of 25 listed retailers sells an identical item for less within seven days of your order. Clearance prices, multi-buys, members-only prices, promo codes and marketplace sellers do not count, and you need proof of the lower price.

Are Thermacore pans non-stick?

No. The 5-Ply Thermacore saucepans and frying pan are uncoated stainless steel around an aluminium core. That means no coating to wear off and safe use in the oven to 200°C, but food sticks unless the pan is properly heated with oil, which is the most common complaint in the frying pan’s one-star reviews. Several saucepan reviewers also mention water marks.

Why do new John Lewis towels shed so much?

Some shedding is normal in new cotton towels, and John Lewis advises washing before use and limiting fabric conditioner. But many recent one- and two-star reviews of the Egyptian Cotton Towels describe fluff that continues after several washes, mainly in darker colours. If yours keep shedding within 30 days, contact customer services about a fault.

If John Lewis & Partners isn't for you

  • Dunelm is cheaper for towels and bedding, and is one of the retailers John Lewis price matches.
  • ProCook sells its own stainless steel cookware sets direct, often for less than Thermacore.
  • Marks & Spencer has its own bedding and towel ranges at similar prices, with lots of high-street shops.
