Oliver Bonas sells patterned glassware, lamps, mango-wood furniture and the kind of ceramic fish jug that becomes a household’s favourite present. It suits anyone who wants colour at home for sensible money, and anyone buying for someone whose taste they half know.

This guide picks six things from the current UK range, from candle holders to a bedside table, using the on-site reviews read lowest-rated first. The headline advice: send the order to a shop if you can, because the one-star reviews are dominated by its courier, Evri; add a bulb to any lamp, because none come with one; and remember that a postal return costs you the original delivery charge.

The picks, one by one

1Best overall

Patchwork Star Multicolour Velvet Cotton Quilt

A 220cm-square cotton-velvet patchwork quilt in pink, green and navy, and the most reviewed homeware product on the site by a distance.

This quilt is the Oliver Bonas look in one object: cotton velvet panels in warm pink, green, navy and white, stitched into a patchwork star with a soft white reverse. It is 220cm square, which covers a double or king, and weighs 3.3kg with a polyester filling. Its page carried more than 700 reviews averaging close to five stars when we checked.

Read the low ones before you buy. The most repeated complaint, over several years, is smell: reviewers describe a chemical or damp odour that airing did not shift. Others found the colours more muted than the photographs, the white calico thin, and stitching loose within months. The care label says machine wash at 30°C, but several owners say it will not fit a domestic machine. Note too that early batches were made from fabric offcuts; the page says current ones are not.

Yes, if

  • You want one piece that changes a plain bedroom
  • You can air it outside for a few days first

No, if

  • You are sensitive to smells
  • You want bedding you can wash at home

Kyto Double Sided Glass Candlestick Holders Set of Four

At £19.50 for four, these are the cheapest way to put Oliver Bonas colour on a table. They are ribbed soda-lime glass in olive green, golden yellow, sky blue and pale pink, and each one is reversible: one end holds a dinner candle, the other a tea light. With more than 240 reviews, almost all five stars, they are among the safest things in the shop to give as a present.

They are small, though. Each is 6cm tall and wide, and several reviewers said they were smaller than expected. The lowest-rated review came from a buyer who opened the box on Christmas Day to find two holders, not four, which is worth a check on arrival. They are hand wash only.

Yes, if

  • You want a colourful present under £20
  • You use both tea lights and dinner candles

No, if

  • You want a statement candlestick

Green Ceramic Gluggle Jug Extra Large

The gluggle jug is a traditional design, a fish with its mouth as the spout and its tail as the handle, said to make a ‘glug glug’ as it pours. Oliver Bonas’s extra-large version is sage green with engraved scales and fins, 27cm tall and holding 1.3 litres, in vitrified porcelain. It has more than 200 reviews, almost all five stars, and a cobalt blue version too.

The weaknesses are practical. It is not dishwasher or microwave safe, and the page recommends hand washing to protect the engraved detail, which also traps dust when it stands as a vase. The one lukewarm review is the funniest complaint on the site: it doesn’t really glug, or only for the first pour from full.

Yes, if

  • You need a present with personality
  • You want a jug that works as a vase

No, if

  • Everything in your kitchen goes in the dishwasher

Clara Pink & Green Stripe Glass Desk & Table Lamp

Clara is Oliver Bonas’s bestselling lamp family, and this is the full-size version: a rounded pink glass base with a thick green stripe, a neutral linen shade and a fabric cord. It stands 54cm tall with a 40cm shade, takes an E27 bulb up to 60W, and uses a rocker switch. Reviews average close to five stars across several dozen buyers.

Budget for extras. The bulb is not included, and the lamp FAQ says its lamps and bulbs are not dimmable. The only criticism in the reviews is a buyer who found several blemishes in the glass base, which he thought unacceptable at the price; the glass is made using art-glass techniques, so small variations are part of the deal. Do not confuse it with the Clara lamp base, which is 11cm tall and has no shade.

Yes, if

  • You want a lamp that is also a decoration
  • You like pink and green together

No, if

  • You want a dimmable lamp

These tumblers show what Oliver Bonas does with glassware: a plain, straight-sided 420ml glass with small decorative chillies embedded in it, mouth-blown so each one differs slightly, and sold in a gift box. They have more than 170 reviews, nearly all five stars, and plenty of buyers went back for a second set.

The criticisms are mild but consistent. One reviewer had seen similar glasses in a supermarket for £4 each, another wished the glass were thinner, and one thought there were too few chillies. They are hand wash only and not suitable for hot drinks, which makes them a weekend glass rather than an everyday one.

Yes, if

  • You want a gift under £25 that comes boxed
  • You make cocktails at home

No, if

  • Your glasses must survive the dishwasher

Tinta Pink Stripe Mango Wood Bedside Table

Tinta is Oliver Bonas’s bestselling furniture collection, and this bedside table is the easiest way in. It is handmade from mango wood (with some MDF), 58cm tall, 37.5cm wide and 34cm deep, with fluted details, two shallow drawers and hand-hammered brass pulls; the top drawer front is covered in screen-printed pink striped cotton. Reviews are mostly five stars.

It needs partial assembly, and the lowest-rated review describes a leg piece made badly enough that the screw would not go in, leaving the table wobbly; the same buyer complained about delivery to the Highlands. Furniture delivery costs £35 and takes two to three weeks, and returns need all the original packaging, so keep the box until it is built and steady.

Yes, if

  • You want a bedside table with pattern
  • Your bedroom is short of width

No, if

  • You need deep drawers for storage

Why Oliver Bonas, and why not

Oliver Bonas sells mostly its own designs, and it shows: the glassware, lamps and ceramics have a recognisable, playful character at prices that work for presents. The on-site reviews are unusually useful, too. They are numerous, they include the critical ones with the company’s replies, and they can be sorted lowest first.

The weakness is getting things to you. Its Trustpilot rating was 3.9 when we checked, and the recent one- and two-star reviews are mostly about Evri: parcels marked delivered to the wrong door, paid next-day orders arriving days late, and a returns QR code that did not work. Anthropologie does more ambitious ceramics for more money, Habitat is plainer and cheaper, and the high street’s own homeware departments are easier to return to.

How to choose

1Collect from a shop if you can

Click and collect to an Oliver Bonas shop costs £2.50, or nothing over £30, and takes two to four working days. Evri ParcelShop collection is £3, free over £30. Either way you avoid the doorstep, which is where most of the one-star reviews go wrong, and with glass you can check for breakage before you leave. One reviewer was charged £5 for store collection, so check the figure at checkout.

2Check the dimensions, not the photo

Product photographs flatter scale. The Kyto candle holders are 6cm tall, and the Clara lamp base sold separately from the full lamp is 11cm, which surprises people expecting a table lamp. Every product page lists dimensions, and furniture pages add boxed sizes and weights. Use the boxed sizes to check stairs and doorways: couriers carry furniture only as far as the second floor, and heavier pieces stop on the ground floor.

3Read the care line before gifting

A lot of the glassware and ceramics are hand wash only, and the gluggle jug is not dishwasher or microwave safe. The lamps come without bulbs and are not dimmable. The quilt’s label says machine washable, but owners say it will not fit a home machine. None of this is unreasonable for decorative pieces; all of it is worth knowing before you buy for someone who loads everything into the dishwasher.

The ones we passed over

Aurélie Green Mango Wood Bedside Table

The same £195 as the Tinta and prettier still, with hand-painted florals, but it was on pre-order with a six to eight week wait when we checked, and its reviews are the weakest in the furniture range: a wobbly table, drawers that stick, and one arrival with chipped, uneven paint. The Tinta does the job with fewer complaints.

Quick questions

Who delivers Oliver Bonas parcels?

Small parcels go by Evri, and most of the recent one- and two-star Trustpilot reviews are about it: parcels photographed at the wrong door, marked delivered but missing, or paid next-day orders arriving days late. Furniture uses separate dedicated couriers. If the date matters, collect from an Oliver Bonas shop instead, which is free over £30.

Are Oliver Bonas returns free?

The returns label is free, but the original delivery charge is deducted from the refund unless the item is faulty or you cancelled before delivery. Returning an online order to a shop gives the quickest refund (except PayPal orders), and Apple Pay refunds in a shop must be made on the same device that paid. Earrings bought in a shop cannot be returned at all.

Do Oliver Bonas lamps come with bulbs?

No. The lamp FAQ says bulbs are not included, so check the bulb fitting and maximum wattage on the product page and add one to the basket. It also says Oliver Bonas lamps and bulbs are not dimmable. Desk, table and floor lamps include a shade; lamp bases sold on their own, such as the small Clara base, do not.

Does Oliver Bonas take old furniture away?

It runs a free collection service with the British Heart Foundation, which takes donated furniture and homeware for its charity shops. Arrange it separately from your delivery. Note that Oliver Bonas’s own couriers carry new furniture only as far as the second floor.

Other brands to consider

  • Anthropologie covers similar ground with more ambitious ceramics and furniture, at noticeably higher prices.
  • Habitat offers plainer, cheaper lamps and furniture for anyone who finds Oliver Bonas a little too cheerful.
