Loaf makes slouchy, feather-filled sofas and upholstered beds to order in the UK, and sells them through its own website and showrooms it calls shacks. It suits buyers who want a deep, soft sit and can wait six to nine weeks for it.

This guide picks five pieces and flags one to try in person first. The big choice at Loaf is cushion type, not shape. Its bounce-back seats need occasional plumping; its feather-wrapped seats need it weekly, and the one-star reviews are mostly from people who underestimated that. Returns are possible within 14 days, but cost £95 plus the delivery fee you already paid.

Why each one made the list

1Best overall

Slow Riser Sofa

A retro-shaped sofa with bounce-back seat cushions, feather backs and solid oak legs, rated low maintenance by Loaf itself.

The Slow Riser is the safest first Loaf. Its seat cushions are Loaf’s bounce-back type, a resilient foam core wrapped in slimmer foam and duck feather, which Loaf rates low maintenance with occasional plumping. The back cushions are all feather, the legs solid oak, and it comes in three sizes from 193cm wide, with a 59cm seat depth. It was from £2495 when we checked, made to order in six to eight weeks.

It still has critics. One owner wrote that over about half an hour the cushions push you forward off the seat, and another, who planned to buy replacement covers over the years, found the colours had changed with no warning, so new covers no longer match.

Good for you if

  • You want a soft sit without plumping every day
  • You like a mid-height seat and back

Not for you if

  • You expect to buy matching covers years later
2Best for lounging

Cuddlemuffin Modular Sofa

Loaf’s deepest modular sofa, with an 85cm seat, feather arm pillows and feather-wrapped seat cushions, in two widths of 244cm and 344cm.

If you want a sofa to lie full length on, the Cuddlemuffin is Loaf’s answer. It comes in two widths, 244cm and 344cm, both 122cm deep with an 85cm seat, and is built from modular blocks with feather-filled back cushions and pillowy arm cushions. The medium was from £3595 in twill when we checked, and it is made to order in seven to nine weeks.

The trade-off is upkeep. Loaf rates the feather-wrapped seats medium maintenance, with weekly plumping, and owners in one-star reviews say it needs much more than that to stay comfortable. One buyer described the cushions as noisy, like sitting on a packet of crisps; another said this October that a first sofa had to be remade after months of chasing.

Good for you if

  • You have room for a sofa over 120cm deep
  • You like sinking into a seat rather than sitting up

Not for you if

  • You will not plump cushions at least weekly
  • You want raised legs to clean under
3Best for deep seats

Bear Hug Sofa

A scatter-back sofa with a 77cm-deep seat, feather-wrapped cushions and shorter back legs that tilt the sit backwards, from 170cm wide.

The Bear Hug gives you much of the Cuddlemuffin’s depth in a smaller frame. Its seat is 77cm deep, the back legs are shorter than the front to tip you back, and it comes with scatter cushions, in four sizes from 170cm wide. It was from £2195 when we checked, with delivery in six to eight weeks.

The cushions are feather wrapped, rated medium maintenance with weekly plumping, and that is where the complaints land. Owners report feathers working out of the cushions onto floors and clothes every day, seats going flat within 20 minutes of sitting, and two separate reviews describe the middle of the sofa sinking towards the floor, which in one case a technician confirmed as a manufacturing fault.

Good for you if

  • You want a deep seat in a room under 2m wide
  • You like a reclined sit with scatter cushions

Not for you if

  • Stray feathers would drive you mad

Squishmeister Sofa

A low-backed, deep-seated sofa with tapered oak legs, bounce-back seat cushions and feather backs, in four sizes from 175cm.

The Squishmeister is Loaf’s most mid-century shape: a low back, a 68cm-deep seat and tapered solid oak legs. Like the Slow Riser it has bounce-back seat cushions, rated low maintenance, with all-feather back cushions, and it comes in four widths from 175cm to 266cm. It was from £2195 when we checked, made in six to eight weeks.

It also has one of the longest trails of low reviews of any Loaf sofa. Owners describe seat pads that tip them forward, back cushions that flatten as soon as you lean on them, and fabric wearing through after two or three years. One buyer said the easy-clean fabric would not shift minor marks.

Good for you if

  • You prefer a low back and an open, modern shape
  • You want bounce-back seats rather than feather

Not for you if

  • You need firm back support

The Pillow Talker brings the sofa look to the bedroom: a curved, padded cushion headboard 121cm tall, French seam detailing, solid beech legs and slightly sprung timber slats made for a standard UK mattress. It comes in double, king and super king, in the same 34 colours and six fabrics as the sofas, and was from £1695 for a double when we checked, with delivery in six to eight weeks.

It draws far fewer reviews than the sofas. The low one we found describes a bed delivered with manufacturing defects, a replacement confirmed by Loaf, and then months of delay after a system error meant the exchange was never processed. Check every panel on delivery day.

Good for you if

  • You sit up in bed to read
  • You want bed and sofa in matching fabric

Not for you if

  • You need under-bed storage

Where Loaf wins, and where rivals do

Loaf’s case is comfort you can choose in detail and try first. Every sofa comes in 34 colours and six fabrics, is handmade to order in the UK, and has a frame Loaf describes as glued and screwed, with a 10-year frame guarantee. The product pages say plainly how much plumping each cushion type needs, which few rivals do.

The case against is aftercare. Loaf’s Trustpilot rating was 4.1 when we read it, and the low reviews return to the same themes: cushions that feel different at home from the showroom, technicians who find no fault, and parts or remakes that take months. Heal’s and John Lewis sell firmer, more conventional sofas; Dunelm’s sofa beds cost a fraction of the price.

How to choose

1Pick the cushion before the shape

Loaf lists a cushion type on every product page. Bounce-back seats, on the Slow Riser and Squishmeister, have a resilient foam core and are rated low maintenance. Feather-wrapped seats, on the Cuddlemuffin and Bear Hug, have a softer foam core in a duck feather jacket and need weekly plumping. Back cushions are all feather on every sofa here. Most of the one-star reviews come from owners of feather-wrapped seats.

2Sit on it for longer than five minutes

A recurring complaint is that the delivered sofa felt firmer, flatter or more tilted than the showroom model, which staff plump through the day. If you can, sit for half an hour, lean back properly, and ask how recently the cushions were plumped. Take fabric swatches home too, since some buyers found the delivered colour several shades lighter than they expected.

3Measure doors, stairs and depth

Every Loaf product page has a Will it Fit guide in its dimensions section, and measurements can vary by up to 3cm. Deep sofas are the hard ones: the Cuddlemuffin is 122cm front to back. Large items are delivered and assembled in the room of your choice, but if they cannot get it in, you are back to the returns process.

4Read the finance terms before ordering

Loaf offers V12 Retail Finance, and its terms are stricter than paying by card. Delivery address changes cannot be made on finance orders, so the order must be cancelled and placed again, which resets the lead time. Changing fabric or colour on a finance order means a new application. One reviewer found this out after the showroom had told them otherwise.

The ones we passed over

Squisharoo Sofa

Loaf pitches it as a slightly more upright sit with bounce-back seats, from £2195. But its trail of one-star reviews is the longest we found: owners over several years describe seats that are hard and unyielding, cushions that tip forward, and a delivered sofa firmer than the showroom one. Sit on it at length before buying.

Quick questions

Can I return a Loaf sofa if I don’t like it?

Yes, within 14 days of delivery. Loaf calls it a rest drive, and it applies to made-to-order sofas, armchairs and upholstered beds. You fill in a form or ring 0203 141 8300, Loaf collects the sofa for a £95 fee, and the original £95 delivery charge is not refunded. So changing your mind costs £190 on a large item.

How long does Loaf take to deliver a sofa?

The sofas and beds in this guide were quoted at six to eight weeks, and the Cuddlemuffin at seven to nine, because each is made to order. Once the piece reaches Loaf’s warehouse, Wincanton books a date with you, usually within 12 working days, and confirms a two-hour window 48 hours ahead. Multi-item orders wait until everything is ready.

Do Loaf sofas need a lot of plumping?

It depends on the cushion. Loaf rates its bounce-back seats, on sofas such as the Slow Riser and Squishmeister, as low maintenance with occasional plumping. Its feather-wrapped seats, on the Cuddlemuffin and Bear Hug, are medium maintenance with weekly plumping, and many owners say they need it more often than that.

Does Loaf deliver to Northern Ireland?

No. Loaf’s delivery page says it only delivers within mainland UK, with the Isle of Wight as the exception for most item sizes. For Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands it will deliver to the UK depot of an international shipping partner you choose, which then takes care of the rest of the delivery.

Other brands to consider

  • Heal’s sells firmer, more tailored sofas on webbing, backed by a price promise.
  • Dunelm is the budget route, with sofa beds and furniture at a fraction of the price and free same-day collection on small items.
