Dunelm is where much of Britain buys its curtains, duvets and pillows, and increasingly its sofa beds and airers too. It suits anyone furnishing a home on a sensible budget who would rather collect from a shop the same day than wait in for a courier.

This guide picks six things from the current range, from curtains and bedding to a heated airer and a sofa bed, and one we would leave on the shelf. The headline advice: read the composition and care lines, because Dunelm’s product pages contradict themselves more often than they should. Check the price history under any “was” price, and keep mattresses sealed until you are sure.

Berlin Blackout Thermal Eyelet Curtains

Blackout-coated recycled polyester curtains with brushed steel eyelets, sold as a pair in more sizes than most shops stock.

Ready-made curtains are what Dunelm does better than almost anyone, and the Berlin is the reason. Each pair is two panels of 100% recycled polyester with a blackout coating and brushed steel eyelets (40mm across), in widths from 117cm to 284cm and drops up to 274cm, in seven colours. The smallest pair started at £15. The product is labelled “new”, yet carries more than 3,600 reviews averaging 4.6, so some of that praise belongs to an earlier version.

The low ratings repeat three points: panels that arrive different lengths (one buyer measured 8cm), a coated fabric that feels like a shower curtain and creases badly, and light showing through. The care label also says dry clean only, which is a strange instruction for a £15 curtain.

Pick it if

  • You need blackout curtains for a bedroom or nursery
  • Your window is an awkward width or drop

Pass if

  • You want natural fabric that drapes softly
  • You expect to machine-wash your curtains

Dorma is Dunelm’s own heritage bedding label, and the Full Forever pair is its most-reviewed pillow, with more than 1,000 ratings averaging 4.3. Each pillow has a hollowfibre filling in a 233 thread count cotton cover, is rated firm for side sleepers, measures 74 x 48cm and goes in the washing machine. When we checked it was £16 for two, down from £20, and the price history showed the higher price applied in June.

“Full forever” is the claim the one-star reviews attack. Buyers describe pillows going flat or lumpy within days or weeks, and one returning customer says the new batch is far harder than the old. The page also lists the filling as virgin polyester while its sustainability panel credits it with recycled polyester.

Pick it if

  • You want cheap, washable pillows for a guest bed
  • You sleep on your side and like a firm pillow

Pass if

  • You expect a pillow to keep its loft for years

Dorma Full Forever 10.5 Tog Duvet

The matching Dorma duvet is a 10.5 tog, the usual choice for one duvet all year, with a recycled polyester hollowfibre filling, a 100% cotton cover at 233 thread count, quilted stitching and a bound edge. It is machine washable and tumble dries on low, which feather duvets at this price rarely manage. Its 122 reviews average 4.6.

The complaints are specific and worth taking seriously. Several buyers say the cover is stiff and noisy, “like sleeping in a crisp packet”, and one could not return it after breaking the seal on the box. Another measured a super king at 230 x 200cm rather than the stated 260 x 220cm. Measure yours on arrival, before the bag is opened if you can.

Pick it if

  • You want one washable duvet for most of the year
  • You are allergic to feather and down

Pass if

  • You are a light sleeper bothered by a rustling cover

If you want hotel-style bedding without hotel prices, this is Dunelm’s best bet. It is 100% Egyptian cotton percale at 400 thread count, with a single pleat detail and a zip rather than buttons, in 15 colours and sizes from single to emperor. It carries a 10-year guarantee, and the page now says plainly that pillowcases are not included.

That line was added for a reason: several one-star reviews come from buyers who assumed the pillowcases in the photo were part of the set. Across nearly 500 reviews averaging 4.3, the other complaints are a fabric that some find fluffy and scratchy rather than crisp, one report of colour fading after a single wash, shrinkage, and bedding that sleeps warm.

Pick it if

  • You like crisp percale rather than soft sateen
  • You want a colour other than white

Pass if

  • You run hot in bed
  • You will not iron bedding

A heated airer is one of Dunelm’s steady winter sellers. This one is aluminium, with three tiers and 20m of drying space for up to 15kg of washing, and it folds to 10.5cm deep. It was £76 when we checked, down from £95, a price last charged in November 2025 according to the history line beneath it.

Do the sums on the running cost. The page quotes about 4p an hour at 26p per kWh, but a 330W rating at that rate works out at roughly 8.6p an hour at full draw. The one-star reviews are mostly about speed: T-shirts still damp after four hours, and buyers who found it no faster than a radiator. Dunelm sells a separate cover that traps the heat, and one reviewer could not get it in stock.

Pick it if

  • You have no tumble dryer and limited radiator space
  • You can leave washing to dry overnight

Pass if

  • You need clothes dry within an hour or two

The Beatrice is a long-standing Dunelm bestseller, and the II is the reworked version: curved arms, wooden legs, a foam and fibre seat, and a spring and foam mattress that opens to 133 x 182cm. It is tested to 320kg, carries a 10-year guarantee and arrives part assembled. When we checked it was £639.20 in a 20% sale, against a £799 price that the history line dated only from August.

Its 38 reviews average 4.3, and the theme of the lower ones is consistent: a good bed but a hard sofa. Buyers describe it as rock hard, like sitting on a bench, with seat foam that dents within weeks and a noisy spring when opened. Note the length too: 182cm is short for a tall adult.

Pick it if

  • Guests stay a few nights a year
  • You want a sofa bed that looks like a proper sofa

Pass if

  • It will be your main everyday sofa
  • Your regular guests are over six feet tall

Before you buy: how to pick

1Read the features table, not the headline

Dunelm’s product pages are long and not always consistent. The Dorma pillow lists virgin polyester filling beside a panel praising its recycled polyester; the Berlin curtains are labelled new but carry years of reviews; the Cloud shaggy rug showed an original price of “FREE”. The features table at the bottom is the most reliable part: composition, care, dimensions and guarantee. Read it before the photos.

2Check the price history under the sale price

Every reduced item shows a “Price History” link with the month the original price last applied. On the Beatrice II sofa bed it was August 2026, a short run before a 20% sale; on the heated airer it was November 2025. A recent date means the discount is real but modest. Sales come round often, so if the history is short, waiting rarely costs you much.

3Measure curtains by the pole, not the window

Ready-made curtain sizes refer to one panel, and you receive two. Dunelm’s advice is to choose the width closest to your pole length for a full look, and the Berlin comes in four widths and five drops. Check the eyelet diameter if you are reusing a pole, and lay both panels side by side on arrival, since uneven lengths are a recurring complaint.

4Keep mattresses and bedding sealed

Dunelm’s returns policy says an unwrapped mattress cannot be returned unless it is faulty, and reviewers report being refused returns on duvets once the seal was broken. If you are unsure about a mattress, lie on it in a shop first, though one pillow buyer found the display model firmer than the one taken home. For bedding, check the size label through the packaging where you can, and keep the receipt or order email, since a change-of-mind refund needs one.

Why Dunelm, and why not

Dunelm’s case is range, price and convenience together. Few shops sell this many curtain sizes, duvet togs and pillow firmnesses, almost all of it can be collected free from a nearby shop, often the same day, and small items go back to any store. Every reduced price carries a history line showing when the higher price last applied, which more retailers should copy.

Rivals win when something goes wrong. Dunelm’s Trustpilot score was 3.5 when we read it, and October’s one- and two-star reviews describe lost and late parcels, click-and-collect orders that turned out to be out of stock, and phone queues. John Lewis costs more for similar bedding but handles problems with less friction. For mattresses, Simba and Emma offer long home trials, where Dunelm will not take back an unwrapped mattress unless it is faulty.

The ones we passed over

Fogarty Open Coil Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress

Cheap, well reviewed on average and covered by a 10-year guarantee, but it fails the test that matters for a mattress bought online: once unwrapped, it cannot go back unless faulty. Its lowest reviews describe springs felt within months, sides collapsing and a mattress 2-3cm larger than stated. With no trial, that is too much risk for a bed you sleep on nightly.

Quick questions

Can I return a Dunelm mattress if I don’t like it?

Only if it is still sealed. Dunelm’s returns policy says that for health and safety reasons an unwrapped mattress cannot be returned unless it is faulty. That rules out the kind of home trial mattress specialists offer. If you buy one, lie on it in a shop first, and leave the wrapping on until you are sure.

How long is Dunelm’s Christmas returns window?

Anything bought between 12 October and 24 December 2026 can be returned until 31 January 2027, with proof of purchase. The normal change-of-mind rule is 28 days, for unused items in their original packaging. Exclusions still apply, including unwrapped mattresses, and any discount code is shared across every item in the order when a refund is worked out.

Are Dunelm’s sale prices genuine?

They are real reductions, but check how long the higher price ran. Each sale price on the site has a price history link showing the month the original price applied. On some items in this guide that was only a few weeks before the sale began. Sales and 20% events come round often, so a short history is a sign you need not rush.

Alternatives worth a look

  • John Lewis costs more for similar bedding but answers the phone and handles problems with less friction.
  • Simba is the better route to a new mattress, with a 200-night home trial that Dunelm’s sealed-mattress rule rules out.
