Argos Buying Guide 2026: The 6 Best Own-Brand Buys

Argos is where Britain buys the things it needs by tonight: a kettle, a duvet for the spare room, a television for the bedroom. Behind the big names it sells its own labels, Bush, Cookworks, Argos Home, Habitat and Chad Valley among them, and those are where most of the value sits.

This guide picks six own-brand products with thousands of reviews between them and reads the one-star ones first. The short advice: buy Argos own brands for price and for the free returns to any store, check whether an item comes from a Trusted Seller before you pay, and expect the cheapest lines to feel like it.

Bush 43 Inch 43USF26 Smart 4K UHD HDR Freely Fire TV

Argos’s own 43-inch 4K set for 2026, running Amazon’s Fire TV software with Freely built in, so live channels stream over Wi-Fi without an aerial.

Bush is the Argos label people trust with a big purchase, and the 43USF26 is the sensible size of its 2026 range. The product page lists a 4K panel with HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos sound through two 6-watt speakers, Bluetooth, Alexa voice control and the Freely button for live TV over broadband. It mounts on a standard 100 x 100 bracket.

The low ratings, which Argos pools across the 43, 50 and 55-inch versions, are about the screen and the software rather than breakdowns: pixelation in fast action, thin sound, and buyers who had not realised Fire TV means an Amazon home screen. One owner said a store refused to swap a set because it had been set up. There are only two HDMI sockets, and the panel runs at 60Hz, so it is no gaming TV.

Suits you if

  • You want 4K and the main apps for under £200
  • You have no aerial and would stream live TV instead

Look elsewhere if

  • You dislike Amazon’s Fire TV home screen and adverts
  • You need more than two HDMI devices plugged in

Argos Home 10.5 Tog Duvet

A machine-washable, all-season synthetic duvet that costs about the same as a takeaway, and is one of the most-reviewed things Argos sells.

Some products need little explanation. This is a 10.5 tog duvet with a polyester filling and a polypropylene cover, non-allergenic and machine washable (line dry only). The single measures 200 by 135cm, and the double costs a little more. With more than seven thousand reviews on the single alone, most of them five stars, it is the default choice for a guest room or a first flat.

The complaints are consistent and fair for the price. Several buyers describe the cover as stiff, plasticky or canvas-like and say the duvet does not drape around the body. Others found a split seam or a hole on arrival. One said she could not send it back after opening the sealed roll; Argos’s published hygiene exclusions do not name duvets, so ask the store before you give up on a return.

Suits you if

  • You need a cheap duvet for occasional guests
  • You want something you can put in the washing machine

Look elsewhere if

  • You want a soft, cotton-covered duvet for nightly use

Cookworks 700W 17L Standard Microwave

Cookworks is Argos’s budget kitchen brand, and this is its plainest microwave: two dials, six power levels, a defrost setting and a 24.5cm turntable that takes a standard dinner plate. It is 44.6cm wide and comes with Cookworks’ one-year guarantee. Its rating is high across well over a thousand reviews, mostly from people who wanted something that warms soup and does nothing else.

The one-star reviews split into two groups. Some are early failures: units that stopped after a few uses, a door that would not close after months, a timer that did not switch off. The other group is about design. The black dials have black markings, and two reviewers with poor eyesight said they could not read them. Others found the turntable roller flimsy and the plate jumping off it.

Suits you if

  • You only reheat and defrost
  • Worktop space is tight

Look elsewhere if

  • You have poor eyesight and need a clear dial
  • You want a grill or combination oven

Habitat is sold through Argos’s website and stores, and the Roma is its best-reviewed chairbed. It is 90cm wide as a chair and opens to a 91 by 190cm sleeping area, with a foam and fibre-wrapped seat, a long bolster cushion and wooden feet you screw on yourself. It carries a two-year guarantee, longer than most Argos own-brand furniture, and comes in grey fabric as well as velvet and boucle versions.

As a chair it earns its rating. As a bed it splits opinion badly. The most-liked negative reviews describe lying on the wooden cross braces, and several owners bought a mattress topper or gave up. Argos labels it for occasional use, and its own review summary says the bed is firm. Returning it costs a £30 collection charge unless it is faulty.

Suits you if

  • You need a good-looking chair that sometimes sleeps one
  • Guests stay a night or two, not a week

Look elsewhere if

  • Someone will sleep on it regularly
  • You want to try before committing to a £30 return charge

This is the sort of thing Habitat does well at a price nobody else matches: a 16cm mushroom of hand-made glass, in blue and green or white and rust, lit by an integrated warm-white LED. It needs two AAA batteries, which are not included, and gives a soft 40 lumens. That is mood lighting, not reading light, and the page is honest about it.

The glass gets praise in nearly every review. The base gets the blame. The lowest ratings repeat the same fault: the plastic base and bulb unit is not fixed to the shade, so it drops out when you lift the lamp, and a few arrived already apart. One reviewer found a tiny screw on the battery flap hidden under a label, and another notes the LED is glued in and cannot be replaced.

Suits you if

  • You want a pretty, cordless accent light
  • You are buying a small present

Look elsewhere if

  • You need light to read by
  • You will pick it up often by the shade

Chad Valley is Argos’s toy label, and the easel is one of its steadiest sellers at Christmas. It stands 107cm tall for children from three, with a chalkboard, a magnetic whiteboard, a roll of paper, an eraser, a clock face for learning the time and a storage tray underneath. For the price, the amount in the box is the attraction.

The bad reviews read like a warning about Christmas Eve. Year after year, buyers report screws, nuts or magnets missing from the box, and some found Argos could not supply the parts. Others say the frame is not very sturdy, and one grandparent said a leg broke within a month. The paper roll runs out and owners struggle to find a refill that fits. Open the box and count the fixings the week you buy it.

Suits you if

  • You want a big present that is not plastic
  • Your child likes chalk, pens and magnets equally

Look elsewhere if

  • You will not check the parts until Christmas Eve
  • You want a heavy, rigid easel that will last years

How to choose

1Check who is actually selling it

Argos now lists items from Trusted Sellers alongside its own stock. They look the same in the search results, but the rules differ. You cannot take a Trusted Seller item back to an Argos store; you post it or arrange a courier through the Contact Seller button, and faults go to the seller too. Every product in this guide is Argos’s own label and comes back through the normal routes.

2Read the guarantee line on the page

Own-brand guarantees are not all the same. Cookworks, Bush and Chad Valley products in this guide carry one year from the manufacturer, while the Habitat Roma chairbed carries two. Argos will try to sell you Argos Care on top at checkout. Your legal rights already cover faults for longer than a year in many cases, so weigh the cover against the price of the item before adding it.

3Know the cost of a big return

Small things go back to any store for free, or Argos will collect them for £3.95. Large items delivered to your home are different: a change-of-mind collection costs £30, which is a serious slice of a £230 chairbed. If you are unsure about size or comfort for furniture, try a similar piece in a Habitat or large Argos store first.

4Use the reviews, but read the variant

Argos pools reviews across sizes and colours, so a television’s rating mixes the 43, 50 and 55-inch sets, and a duvet’s mixes single and double. Each review says which version it came from. Sort by lowest rating and read ten; the repeated fault is usually obvious by the fifth. Note too that Argos runs a prize draw for reviewers, which it discloses on every product page.

Why buy from Argos?

Argos wins on reach and on the store network. Order by 1pm for same-day delivery in much of the country, collect free from an Argos counter or a Sainsbury’s collection point, and take most things back to any store without paying postage. Its own brands undercut branded equivalents on almost everything in this guide.

Rivals win elsewhere. John Lewis & Partners offers longer guarantees and better service on televisions and furniture, Dunelm has a wider and better-quality bedding and lighting range, and supermarkets match Argos on cheap small appliances. Argos’s weak spot is what happens after a problem. Its Trustpilot score was 4.1 from a very large number of reviews when we checked, but the newest one-star reviews are dominated by failed home deliveries, missed installation slots and customers routed to Facebook, X or an 0345 number instead of a person.

Questions people ask

Which brands are Argos’s own?

The labels in this guide are all Argos’s own: Bush for televisions and electricals, Cookworks for small kitchen appliances, Argos Home for bedding and homeware, Habitat for furniture and lighting, and Chad Valley for toys. Each has a “Shop all” link on its product pages. Branded goods such as Samsung or LEGO sit alongside them, and Trusted Seller listings come from outside companies.

Can I return an Argos item I have opened?

Usually, yes, within 30 days. Argos’s policy says you may inspect an item as you would in a shop, such as switching on a camera or unboxing a toy. The exceptions are hygiene and sealed items: opened games and software, earphones, underwear, make-up and similar. If you have used an item beyond inspection, Argos may reduce the refund or refuse it, which is where several television complaints come from.

Is Argos Care worth buying?

It depends on the item and on your own rights. The microwave in this guide showed Argos Care from £13.49 against a £49 price, a large share of the cost. Faults that were present at purchase are already covered by consumer law, and Argos itself offers repair or replacement up to 12 months. Accidental damage cover is the difference. This is not financial advice; read the terms before you buy.

Can I collect an Argos order from Sainsbury’s?

Yes. Argos runs collection points inside many Sainsbury’s supermarkets as well as its own stores, and Click & Collect is free with seven days to pick up. You can also take most Argos returns back to a Sainsbury’s collection point. The exception is Trusted Seller items, which cannot go back to any Argos counter and must be returned through the seller.

Other brands to consider

  • John Lewis & Partners costs more but gives longer guarantees on televisions and appliances, and its own-brand bedding is a clear step up.
  • Dunelm has a far deeper range of duvets, lamps and furniture, with more showrooms to try a chairbed before buying.
