Lush makes fresh, heavily scented bath, body and face products by hand, and sells most of them without packaging. It suits people who like strong fragrance, enjoy a shop with staff who will let you smell everything, and do not mind treating a cleanser like a yoghurt.

This guide picks six products from the current UK range, chosen from the bestseller list and read against the lowest-rated reviews on Lush’s own site. The headline advice: buy in a shop if you can, because the brand’s delivery record is much weaker than its products. Start with small sizes, store solid bars dry, and take your empty black pots back for credit.

Angels on Bare Skin Cleanser

Lush’s bestselling cleanser, a paste of ground almonds, kaolin and glycerine that you mix with water in your palm, with more than two thousand reviews on the UK site.

Angels on Bare Skin is the product that best explains Lush. It is a soft, crumbly block of ground almonds, kaolin clay and glycerine with lavender, rose and chamomile blue oils, which turns into a cleansing milk once you add water. Lush calls it gentle enough for “the stroppiest of skins” and says a lab test, run on cells rather than people, found it non-irritating. Those are the brand’s words. It is self-preserving, and the page tells you to use it within three months.

The low-rated UK reviews are mostly about use rather than results: too dry and crumbly, awkward to spread, bits left in the eyes and hairline, and a lot of water needed to rinse it off. A few found the smell hard to like, and a handful reported breakouts. Skin reactions are individual, so buy one pot and see.

Yes, if

  • You want a soap-free cleanser without a plastic tube
  • You will finish a pot within three months

No, if

  • You want something that rinses off in seconds
  • You dislike lavender
2Best for plastic-free hair

Honey I Washed My Hair Shampoo Bar

A naked shampoo bar with fairly traded honey and bergamot oil, sold without a bottle and one of the most reviewed hair products Lush makes.

Shampoo bars are where Lush’s packaging-free argument is strongest, and this is its bestseller. The 55g bar uses the scent of the brand’s Honey I Washed The Kids soap, with fairly traded honey and bergamot oil; Lush says the honey draws moisture into the hair. Read the ingredients before the marketing: the first is sodium coco-sulfate, a conventional foaming agent, so it lathers like a liquid shampoo.

The one-star reviews on Lush’s UK site fall into three groups. Some found it left hair dry, knotted or “straw-like”, and a few blamed a formula change. Some said it irritated their scalp. And a few found the bar went soft or broke apart, which is why the product page suggests keeping it in a tin or cork pot, sold separately. Left in a wet shower tray, it will not last.

Yes, if

  • You want to stop buying shampoo in plastic bottles
  • You like a sweet, honeyed scent

No, if

  • Your hair is very dry or tangles easily
  • You want a sulphate-free shampoo

Sleepy Body Lotion

An oat milk and lavender body lotion in four pot sizes, whose own product page admits it is not promising to send you to sleep.

Sleepy is the Lush lotion people give as a present, and the page is unusually candid about it: “We’re not saying that this malty lotion will help you sleep.” What it is, according to the ingredient list, is oat milk, almond oil, lavender water and cocoa butter, with tonka and ylang ylang in the scent. It comes in four sizes, from a 50g pot to 440g, and it is self-preserving, so the small pot is the sensible first buy.

The criticism in Lush’s UK reviews is nearly all about scent. Several long-time buyers say a newer pot smelt nothing like their old one, describing it as burnt, sickly or like rubber, and a few found almost no lavender at all. Others found it sticky or slow to sink in. Smell it in a shop before you buy the big tub.

Yes, if

  • You want a safe present for a Lush fan
  • You like sweet, vanilla-leaning lavender

No, if

  • You want a clean, herbal lavender scent
  • You dislike lotions that sit on the skin

The Comforter Bubble Bar

A 200g blackcurrant-scented bubble bar that turns the water pink and, crumbled into pieces, lasts several baths rather than one.

Bath bombs are what Lush is famous for, but they are single-use and fragile in the post. The Comforter is the better buy. It is a 200g slab of bubble bar, scented with cassis absolute and bergamot oil, that you crumble under the running tap for pink water and a lot of foam. Several UK reviewers say a quarter is enough, which turns £7.50 into a handful of baths.

The weak spot is the scent, again. Lush describes it as a blackcurrant sweet, and some buyers who expected mixed berries did not like it. Others say the fragrance fades once it hits the water, and one recent reviewer got a bar with no scent at all as a loyalty reward. A 2024 reviewer complained the bars had shrunk to half their old size. The foaming agent is sodium laureth sulfate.

Yes, if

  • You want bubbles rather than a fizzing bath bomb
  • You like a fruity, sweet scent

No, if

  • You prefer a bath without foaming agents

Sticky Dates Shower Gel

A date-syrup and vanilla shower gel that began as an Eid limited edition in 2022 and stayed because customers asked for it.

The details

Sticky Dates is the shower gel Lush calls its number one bestseller. It is made with organic date syrup (the page says 25%), vanilla, sandalwood oil and benzoin, and smells, by most reviewers’ accounts, of toffee or sticky toffee pudding. It first appeared in the 2022 Eid collection and was kept on all year. Sizes run from 125g to 580g.

It is very well rated, but the complaints are consistent. Lush describes it as a low-lather wash, and several reviewers found it watery and needed a lot to build foam, which makes a small bottle go quickly. Others say it smells wonderful in the bottle and of very little on the skin. One asked Lush to drop the sodium lauryl sulphate. Price is the other theme: some long-time buyers now wait for the Boxing Day sale.

Yes, if

  • You like vanilla, caramel and toffee scents
  • You want a shower gel that stays on the shelf all year

No, if

  • You want a rich lather from a small amount
  • You want a cheap everyday body wash

Scrubee Body Scrub

A solid honey, cocoa and shea butter bar with ground coconut shells and almonds, and one of the highest review counts on the Lush site.

The details

Scrubee is a scrub in bar form: ground coconut shells and almonds for the grit, and honey, extra virgin coconut oil, cocoa butter and shea butter to leave something behind on the skin. It is 100g, solid, sold without packaging, and carries a melt warning on the page: keep it cool, and in the fridge in hot weather.

That butter content is the source of almost every complaint. Recent one-star UK reviews describe a waxy, lard-like coating that took several washes to remove, oil on towels, and a shower floor slippery enough to be a hazard. One reviewer blamed it for a blocked drain. A few thought the honey scent had changed, and one found a bar lasted only two uses. Use it on dry patches rather than all over, and rinse the tray afterwards.

Yes, if

  • You want a scrub and body butter in one step
  • You like a honey scent

No, if

  • You have a slippery shower tray or slow drain
  • You hate an oily film after washing

Lush against the rest

Lush’s case is freshness, packaging and shops. Many of its products are self-preserving and dated, solid bars leave the warehouse naked in potato-starch packing chips, and the black pots are made of recycled plastic that earns you 50p of Lush Wallet credit when you take it back. The shops, by the evidence of Trustpilot, are the best part: even angry reviewers praise the staff.

Rivals win on calm and on service. Neal’s Yard Remedies offers organic certification and far less perfume; The Body Shop is cheaper for plain body care. And Lush’s online service is its weak point. Its UK Trustpilot rating was “Average” when we read it, and the one- and two-star reviews are dominated by Evri parcels that vanished, melted or crushed boxes, and a chat assistant that reviewers found hard to get past. Fragrance-sensitive shoppers will find almost nothing unscented here.

Before you buy: how to pick

1Smell it first, then buy small

Scent is the most common complaint in Lush’s lowest-rated reviews, for Sleepy, Angels, The Comforter and Sticky Dates alike, and several long-standing buyers say a favourite smells different from the last pot. Fragrance is personal and the range leans sweet. If a shop is near, go and sniff. If not, choose the smallest size: Sleepy starts at 50g and Sticky Dates at 125g, and the big tubs only make sense once you know.

2Treat fresh products like food

Lush prints storage instructions on its product pages, and they are not decoration. Angels on Bare Skin should be used within three months. Scrubee carries a melt warning and belongs in the fridge in a heatwave. Shampoo bars need to dry out between washes, which is why Lush sells tins and cork pots. Reviews of bars that turned gooey or crumbled usually describe a bar that lived in a wet shower tray. Batch details are printed on each product.

3Buy fragile things in person

Bubble bars, bath bombs and anything with a delicate shape are the items most often described as broken or melted in online reviews. Solid products are posted unwrapped, cushioned only by starch chips. Shampoo bars, cleansers and pots travel well enough; bath products for a gift are better chosen at a counter, where you can pick one without cracks and take it home yourself.

What we'd leave on the shelf

Aromaco Deodorant

A long-running patchouli deodorant at £7.50, with a decent average built over years. The recent UK reviews are a different story. Long-time users say it now comes cut as a thin soap wedge that is awkward to hold, that the bar is too hard to leave anything on the skin, and that the smell has changed. A few report red, sore underarms. Wait until the reviews settle.

Questions people ask

Can I return a Lush product I have opened?

Lush’s returns page promises a no-quibble exchange or refund on any product you are not satisfied with, which is more generous than most beauty brands. For online orders you start the return through Royal Mail’s returns portal and, if you simply changed your mind, you pay the postage. You may be able to take an online purchase back to a shop, but Lush asks you to phone 01202 930051 first to check.

Are Lush products unscented or suitable for fragrance-sensitive skin?

Very few are unscented. Every product in this guide lists fragrance compounds such as limonene and linalool, and most add perfume or essential oils. Lush prints full ingredient lists on every product page, so read them before you buy. Skin reactions are individual, and if you have a skin condition a pharmacist or GP is better placed to advise than any shop.

How does the Lush pot return scheme work now?

Through Lush Club. You need a Lush account and a Lush Wallet, and each eligible item of Lush plastic packaging you return to a UK shop earns 50p in Wallet credit. It is a shop-only scheme, so you cannot post empties back, which one Trustpilot reviewer in Europe found frustrating. Wash the pots first.

Why do Lush bars go soft or fall apart?

Usually water. Shampoo bars, Scrubee and the soaps are solid and unwrapped, and Lush’s own pages tell you to keep them dry between uses, in a tin or cork pot for shampoo bars and somewhere cool for the butter-rich scrubs. Reviews of bars that turned to mush or crumbled after a few washes mostly describe bars stored in the shower. Cut a bar in half and keep one piece dry.

If Lush isn't for you

  • Neal’s Yard Remedies covers similar natural-ingredient ground with organic certification, glass bottles and much less perfume in the air.
  • The Body Shop is cheaper for straightforward body butters and hand creams, with quieter scents and less theatre.
  • Rituals suits people who want a scented routine in refillable bottles rather than fizzing bars in paper bags.
