Whittard has sold tea from Chelsea since 1886 and now fills its shops with nearly as much hot chocolate and instant tea as leaf. It suits anyone moving from teabags to loose leaf, anyone buying a present for a tea drinker, and anyone who likes to smell a blend before paying for it.

This guide picks six things from the current UK range, plus one we would skip. The headline advice: buy the leaf, and expect to use more of it than the pack suggests, because ‘weak’ is the commonest complaint about the breakfast blend. Read the ingredients panel on anything powdered. And treat the Taste Promise as a reason to shop in person, since posting a tin back is at your own cost.

1Best overall

English Breakfast Loose Leaf Tea

Whittard’s best-selling tea, a breakfast tea sourced entirely from West Java rather than the usual Assam, Ceylon and Kenyan mix.

This is the tea Whittard numbers ‘No. 1’ on its own page, and it is an unusual breakfast blend. Most draw on Assam, Ceylon and Kenya; this one is sourced entirely from West Java in Indonesia, which Whittard says makes it close to a single-origin tea. It comes as a 100g pouch at £10.95 or a 140g caddy at £14.95, and like much of the range is packed in Germany.

With more than 600 on-site reviews it rates well, but the low ones agree with each other: too weak and too delicate for a first cup, needing two spoonfuls where one would do, and greyish with milk. A few found the leaf dusty. One reviewer noted the website once described the caddy and pouch teas as coming from different origins. If you like a strong brew, try a mini caddy first.

Good for you if

  • You like a smooth, rounded cup rather than a punchy one
  • You are moving from teabags to loose leaf

Not for you if

  • You want a builder’s tea that stands up to a long stew
2Best for smoky tea

Russian Caravan Loose Leaf Tea

One of Whittard’s earliest blends: Assam, Lapsang Souchong and high-grown Nepalese tea, for a malty cup with a thread of campfire smoke.

This is the kind of tea that justifies a specialist shop. Whittard describes it as one of its very first creations: malty Assam, smoky Lapsang Souchong from Fujian and a high-grown Nepalese tea for brightness, in a 100g pouch. It takes milk well and makes a good weekend pot.

It rates highly from nearly 180 reviews, and the criticism is about the smoke. Several buyers found it far smokier than expected, one comparing it to burnt tyre; others found it weaker or flatter than they remembered. A run of reviews complains that batches vary, and one long-time drinker said three replacement packs were no better than the first. If you have never had Lapsang, that is the test: if you liked it, you will probably like this.

Good for you if

  • You enjoy Lapsang Souchong but want it softened
  • You want something you will not find in a supermarket

Not for you if

  • You dislike any smokiness in tea
  • You need the same taste from every pack
3Best for hot chocolate

70% Cocoa Hot Chocolate

The one Whittard hot chocolate with cocoa, not sugar, as its first ingredient, and less than half the sugar of the Luxury version.

Check price at Whittard of Chelsea

Most of Whittard’s hot chocolates list sugar first. This one does not: cocoa powder makes up 73%, with cocoa solids of at least 70%, and the label gives 26g of sugars per 100g against 59g for the Luxury Hot Chocolate. A 300g tub makes about 15 mugs with milk, and it is suitable for vegans.

It rates very well, from nearly 300 reviews, but it divides people who expected something else. Several found it bitter, a couple found it bland, and one was annoyed to discover it is essentially a sweetened cocoa powder rather than something that dissolves in hot water. It needs milk and a whisk, and it will not froth in every machine.

Good for you if

  • You prefer dark chocolate to milk
  • You want less sugar per mug

Not for you if

  • You want a just-add-water drink
  • You like hot chocolate sweet
4Best gift

Luxury Hot Chocolate

One of Whittard’s most-reviewed products: a sweet, smooth hot chocolate in a 350g tub that makes about 17 mugs.

If you are buying for someone else, this is the safe choice. It has well over a thousand on-site reviews with an average close to five stars, it is suitable for vegans, and a 350g tub makes about 17 mugs. Whittard points to its 39% cocoa powder as more than many everyday hot chocolates use.

Read the label, though. Sugar is the first ingredient, the nutrition panel gives 59g of sugars per 100g, and it is a product of Germany. The low reviews say it is too sweet or not very chocolatey, a couple of long-standing buyers think the recipe has become sweeter, and several online orders arrived with the powder burst open inside the parcel. If you can, buy this one in a shop.

Good for you if

  • You want a reliable present under £15
  • The person you are buying for likes it sweet

Not for you if

  • You are watching sugar; choose the 70% instead

Pimlico Glass Teapot with Infuser

Loose leaf is easier with the right pot, and the Pimlico is the obvious place to start. It is heat-resistant borosilicate glass, holds 600ml, weighs 244g, and has a removable stainless steel infuser plus a spring filter in the spout. It is dishwasher safe, although Whittard recommends washing by hand.

It has nearly 240 reviews and a high average, but the one-stars are consistent and worth knowing. The commonest is breakage: handles cracking or snapping off at the joint, sometimes after weeks and sometimes after a couple of years, and one spout chipping. Several say ‘three cups’ is generous, nearer two mugs. One noted that the lid is plastic, and another that the glass pot is not sold on its own if it breaks.

Good for you if

  • You want to watch the leaf brew
  • You make tea for one or two at a time

Not for you if

  • You need a pot for four or more
  • Your kitchen is hard on glassware

Margaret’s Hope 2026 First Flush Darjeeling Single Estate Loose Leaf Tea

If you already like Darjeeling, this is the step up. Margaret’s Hope was established in 1865 in the Himalayan foothills, and the first flush is the earliest, lightest picking of the year: muscatel, floral and bright. Whittard suggests drinking it without milk. It costs £24.95 for a 100g pouch, or £29.95 in a stackable caddy, against £10.95 for the standard Darjeeling.

There are only a handful of on-site reviews, and both one-stars are about supply rather than taste: one order was cancelled for lack of stock on the day a promotional email went out, and another never arrived. That fits a tea sold for a short season. Buy early in the year, and do not expect it to taste like breakfast tea.

Good for you if

  • You drink tea black and want something special
  • You are buying for a serious tea drinker

Not for you if

  • You take milk in every cup
  • You want a tea you can reorder all year

Choosing the right one

1Pouch first, caddy later

Most teas come as a refill pouch or a caddy, and the caddy costs more for a little more tea: the English Breakfast is £10.95 for 100g in a pouch and £14.95 for 140g in a caddy. Buy one caddy to keep, then refill it from pouches. One caution from the reviews: a long-standing customer was told the caddy and pouch Earl Grey come from different suppliers, so if a refill tastes different, say so.

2Read the ingredients on anything powdered

Whittard’s hot chocolates and instant teas vary far more than their tins suggest. The 70% Cocoa lists cocoa first, with 26g of sugars per 100g. The Luxury lists sugar first, with 59g. The Turkish Apple instant tea is 96g of sugars per 100g. None of this is hidden; every product page has an ingredients list and a nutrition panel. This is general information, not dietary advice.

3Use more leaf than you think

The most common complaint about Whittard’s breakfast teas is that they brew weak. The leaf is a fairly whole cut, and several reviewers say one heaped spoon is not enough for a strong cup with milk. Start with two teaspoons per mug, use water just off the boil for black tea, and give it four minutes before you decide it is too delicate. Darjeeling and oolong want less time and no milk.

4Use the shop for the Taste Promise

The Taste Promise offers brewing advice, then an exchange, then a refund if you do not like something. Its own page tells you to visit a shop with your order confirmation. Whittard’s Trustpilot replies confirm postal returns are paid by the buyer, which can cost more than a pouch is worth. If you live far from a branch, try mini caddies or advent and selection boxes before committing.

Why buy from Whittard of Chelsea?

Whittard’s case is range and shops. Few high-street names sell a smoky blend like Russian Caravan, milk oolong and a seasonal single-estate Darjeeling, and in a shop you can smell a blend before you buy. Subscriptions are flexible too, with free delivery on subscription orders of £20 or more. Trustpilot rated it 4.5 when we read it.

Rivals win in two places. Fortnum & Mason has the deeper tea list, with prices to match. Hotel Chocolat makes the more chocolatey drinking chocolate. Whittard’s weak spots are consistency and the small print: one recent Trustpilot reviewer was told the Earl Grey in caddies comes from a different supplier to the refill packs, and several found the Taste Promise worth little because posting a tin back is at their own cost. Much of the range, including the leaf teas, is labelled a product of Germany.

What we'd leave on the shelf

Turkish Apple Flavour Instant Tea

One of Whittard’s most-reviewed products, and well liked, but read the label first. The ingredients are sugar, citric acid, black tea extract and natural flavouring, with 96g of sugars per 100g and no apple. It is a sweet soft drink in a tea merchant’s tin. Several buyers also had tubs arrive set solid or burst open.

Your questions, answered

Is Whittard tea actually made in Chelsea?

No. The company traces itself to Chelsea in 1886, but the product pages for the loose leaf teas in this guide, including the English Breakfast and Russian Caravan, say ‘Product of Germany’, and the hot chocolates and instant teas say the same. The leaf itself is grown in Indonesia, India, China and elsewhere. Some gift boxes are labelled a product of the UK.

Why does my Whittard English Breakfast taste weak?

You are not alone; it is the commonest complaint in the low reviews. The blend is a single-origin West Javan tea, smoother and rounder than the usual Assam-heavy breakfast blends. Use two teaspoons per mug, freshly boiled water and a full four or five minutes. If you still want more punch, Whittard’s Tippy Assam or Chelsea Breakfast, described as rich, strong and malty, are the obvious swaps.

Can I return Whittard tea I do not like?

Yes, under the Taste Promise, but the easy route is a shop. Take the product and the order confirmation or delivery note, and staff will offer brewing advice, an exchange or a refund. You can post it back instead, but Whittard’s replies to complaints confirm postage is at your own cost. Ordinary returns must be within 30 days of despatch and in saleable, original packaging.

Rivals worth a look

  • Fortnum & Mason has the grander tea list and gift hampers, at prices to match the Piccadilly address.
  • Hotel Chocolat makes richer, less sugary drinking chocolate, built around its own Velvetiser machine.
