Hotel Chocolat Buying Guide 2026: The 6 Best Drinking Chocolate

The Velvetiser, the sachets worth refilling it with, a cheaper pouch for the hob and two gift buys, with the guarantee small print and the shrinking-sachet complaint that most product pages leave out.

Hotel Chocolat’s drinking chocolate list now runs to more than twenty recipes, and the Velvetiser is the reason. The machine and its sachets suit anyone who wants a proper hot chocolate made from flakes of real chocolate rather than powder, and who does not mind paying for it.

This guide picks six things from the UK range and flags one way of buying we would avoid. Start with the drinks, which have the strongest reviews; approach the boxed chocolates more carefully, because that is where many one-star Trustpilot reviews land. Two details are easy to miss. The footer describes the company as an affiliate of Mars, Incorporated. And the Velvetiser has its own two-year guarantee, separate from the brand’s happiness promise.

This is the product the rest of the range is built around. Pour in milk, add a sachet of chocolate flakes, turn the dial right for hot or left for cold, and the whisk melds them at around 68 to 70°C. The kit includes a Podcup, a Podglass and ten single serves, five hot and five cold. It was £99.95 when we read it, with £20 off a listed £119.95.

The 68 to 70°C setting is deliberate, and Hotel Chocolat’s own troubleshooting page has an entry for drinks that are not hot enough. Faults come up on Trustpilot too: one owner had two machines replaced in two years, another two that stopped working under guarantee, both replaced quickly. Keep the receipt, because it is the guarantee.

  • You want cold chocolate drinks from the same machine

2Best for the Velvetiser

If you own a Velvetiser, this is the box to keep in the cupboard. Each of the ten sachets is real chocolate, cocoa solids first in the ingredients, at a minimum of 70%, and the label gives 27g of sugars per 100g. It is made in the UK with cocoa from Ghana, and it can be made vegan with a dairy-free milk, with the usual warning that it is produced alongside milk chocolate.

It rates well on the site from about fifty reviews. The complaints we could read are about value rather than taste. One subscriber noticed the sachets had dropped from 35g to 31g at the same price, and that the new packaging makes the 70% and 85% hard to tell apart. At roughly £1.50 a cup, it is a treat rather than a habit.

This is the cheapest way into Hotel Chocolat’s drinking chocolate, and the one we would start with if you do not own a Velvetiser. The pouch holds the same 70% dark flakes as the sachets, with 27g of sugars per 100g, and the page gives a hob method: 220ml of milk, about six heaped teaspoons of flakes, whisked over a medium heat for around four minutes without boiling. A steam wand works too.

It is new, with only a handful of on-site reviews, so there is little customer evidence either way. The page does not state how many cups a pouch makes. Some long-standing Trustpilot reviewers say the drinking chocolate tastes weaker than it used to, which a pouch at least lets you fix with an extra spoonful.

Pick it if

  • You want to try it before buying a machine
  • You like to adjust the strength

Pass if

  • You want a drink with no whisking
4Best for intense flavour

Dark 85% Hot Chocolate Sachets

Ten sachets of 85% dark chocolate flakes, with about half the sugar of the Classic 70% and a more bitter cup.

For people who find the Classic too mild, this is the next step. The cocoa solids rise to a minimum of 85%, the ingredients are just cocoa mass, cocoa butter, sugar and soya lecithin, and the label gives 14g of sugars per 100g against 27g for the 70%. Hotel Chocolat describes malty, biscuity notes from Ghanaian cacao.

It has the lowest average of the drinks we looked at, four stars from ten reviews, which tells you it divides people; this is a strong, dry cup. The same Trustpilot complaint applies as for the 70%: sachets reduced from 35g to 31g at the same price, with packaging that makes the two recipes look alike. Try one box before subscribing.

  • You eat 85% chocolate by choice
  • You want less sugar per cup

When you do not know what someone likes, this is the box. It mixes milk, dark, fruit and nut recipes, comes in an embossed box with a gift sleeve that doubles as a card, and you can choose a message wrap for birthdays, thank-yous and Christmas. It weighs 210g and rates well on the site from about twenty reviews.

The boxed chocolates draw most of Hotel Chocolat’s harshest Trustpilot reviews. Reviewers complain that boxes have shrunk while the price per chocolate has gone up, that favourites have been dropped in the redesign, and that some chocolates taste waxy or oily. One father’s day buyer said the new fruit box was missing half of what used to be in it. Buy it as a gift, not as a bargain.

Most supermarket calendars hold small moulded shapes. This one holds proper chocolates: 24 pralines, truffles and liqueurs, with Florentine, peanut butter, hazelnut praline, carrot cake and lemon cheesecake recipes named on the page, plus a salted espresso martini truffle with alcohol. It rates highly from nearly thirty on-site reviews and weighs 310g.

The Trustpilot complaint we found is from last year’s buyer of this calendar: only 15 different chocolates across the 24 days, so some repeat, and doors so awkward to open that they spoiled the daily treat. It contains alcohol, so check before giving it to anyone who avoids it.

Working out which one is yours

1Machine or pouch

The Velvetiser makes a smoother drink with no effort, but it ties you to sachets at roughly £1.50 a cup and heats to only 68 to 70°C. A pouch of flakes and a whisk costs less and lets you set the strength, at the price of four minutes at the hob. If you drink hot chocolate a few times a month, start with the pouch. If it is a daily habit, the machine earns its counter space.

2Pick the percentage, read the sugar

The number on the pack is the minimum cocoa solids, and it changes the sugar a lot. The Classic 70% sachets give 27g of sugars per 100g; the Dark 85% gives 14g, about half as much, and is sold as intensely dark. Every product page lists ingredients and a nutrition panel, so check before you subscribe. This is general information, not dietary advice.

3Read the subscription terms

Ordinary subscriptions can be skipped from your account, though discount codes do not apply to them. The cheaper Velvetiser deal is different. The terms commit you to 12 refill boxes over six or twelve months, you cannot change the quantity or cancel online during that time, and afterwards boxes keep coming monthly until you stop them. Failed card payments are retried three times before a delivery is held.

4Buy boxes in a shop

Boxed chocolates draw the most complaints: smaller boxes, missing favourites, items missing from parcels and late scheduled deliveries. In a shop you can see the size of the box and taste before buying, and Click & Collect is free over £20 from more than a hundred locations. Sale items cannot be collected, and in-store paper bags now cost 40p, according to one Trustpilot reviewer.

Where Hotel Chocolat wins, and where rivals do

Hotel Chocolat’s case is that it makes the drink, not just the chocolate. The Velvetiser and its sachets have no close high-street equivalent, the drinking chocolate is real chocolate rather than sweetened cocoa, and the company runs its own cacao farm, the Rabot Estate in Saint Lucia, although its FAQ says most of its cacao comes from Ghana. There are shops for trying before buying.

The case against is mostly about the boxes. Trustpilot rates the company 3.6, ‘Average’, and its low reviews complain of smaller boxes, higher prices per chocolate, recipes changed since the Mars takeover and a 40p charge for a paper bag in shops. Whittard is cheaper and sweeter for a tin of hot chocolate; Fortnum & Mason is grander for a gift.

What we'd leave on the shelf

Velvetiser Machine & Refill Subscription

A cheaper machine sounds tempting, but read the terms. You commit to 12 refill boxes over six or twelve months, cannot change the quantity or cancel online during that period, and the boxes keep coming monthly afterwards until you end it. With £20 off the machine already, buying outright is simpler.

Questions people ask

Is the Velvetiser worth it?

For a daily hot chocolate drinker, probably yes: it makes a smooth, frothy cup from real chocolate with no whisking and also does cold drinks. The catches are the running cost, about £1.50 a sachet, a serving temperature of 68 to 70°C that some find too cool, and Trustpilot reports of machines failing within the guarantee, although those owners say replacements came quickly.

Can I make Hotel Chocolat drinking chocolate without a Velvetiser?

Yes. The pouch pages give a hob method: warm 220ml of milk or a dairy alternative with about six heaped teaspoons of flakes and whisk for around four minutes over a medium heat without boiling. A coffee machine’s steam wand also works, in about a minute and twenty seconds. The sachets work the same way if you have them.

Is Hotel Chocolat owned by Mars?

The site footer describes Hotel Chocolat as an affiliate of Mars, Incorporated. It still makes its chocolate in the UK, according to the product pages, mostly with cocoa from Ghana, and runs its own cacao farm in Saint Lucia. Some long-standing customers on Trustpilot blame the takeover for smaller boxes and changed recipes; we cannot confirm the cause.

Is the dark drinking chocolate vegan?

The dark recipes, including the Classic 70% and Dark 85%, are made without milk and the pages call them suitable for vegans when made with a dairy alternative. They add a caveat: they are made in the same environment as the milk chocolate, so the company cannot guarantee they are free from milk. Anyone with a milk allergy should take that seriously.

Alternatives worth a look

  • Whittard of Chelsea sells cheaper, sweeter hot chocolate in tins, better suited to a saucepan than a machine.
  • Fortnum & Mason is the grander gift, with hampers and boxes that justify their packaging.
