Rab makes sober, technical kit for hills and mountains, and it suits walkers and climbers who would rather read a specification than a slogan. Its product pages score each item out of five for qualities like warmth, durability and pack size, and the scores are not all fives, which makes the good ones easier to believe.

This guide picks six things from the current UK range: the Microlight down hoody in men’s and women’s cuts, the Downpour waterproof, a fleece, a synthetic jacket for damp days and a Neutrino sleeping bag. Delivery is free and quick. Returns are not free, and there are no exchanges, so get the size right first time.

Each pick in detail

1Best overall

Men’s Microlight Alpine Down Hoody

Rab’s best-known down jacket, rebuilt with recycled 700-fill down and Pertex Quantum, at 428g in a medium.

The Microlight Alpine is the jacket people picture when they hear the name. The current version uses recycled 700-fill down with a hydrophobic finish (152g in a medium) inside 30D Pertex Quantum made partly from recycled fishing nets, with zoned baffles, a wired hood peak, a chest pocket and two zipped hand pockets. It weighs 428g. Rab scores it three out of five for insulation, lightness and durability, which is honest: it is a cold-weather layer, not an expedition parka.

The reviews on Rab’s site are few and mostly delighted, but the lowest one says simply that feathers are coming out. A Trustpilot reviewer who bought this jacket and the matching gilet in 2026 said the same of both, with down escaping through the seams. Some loss of down is normal; a steady stream is worth a warranty claim.

Pick it if

  • You want one warm, packable layer for most of the year
  • You wear it under a waterproof in the wet

Pass if

  • You need serious warmth for winter mountains
  • You want a slim, body-hugging cut

Men’s Downpour Waterproof Jacket

A 2.5-layer Pertex Shield waterproof with a 20,000mm hydrostatic head, underarm vents and a stiffened hood peak, at the lower end of Rab’s prices.

The Downpour is Rab’s everyday hill waterproof. It uses 50D Pertex Shield in a 2.5-layer construction with a PFAS-free water repellent, lists a 20,000mm hydrostatic head and the same figure for breathability, and adds underarm vents, a stiffened hood peak, hook-and-loop cuffs and two hand pockets. It weighs 377g in a medium. Rab rates it four out of five for waterproofing and five for wind.

Most reviewers are pleased. The single one-star review says the jacket stopped keeping water out after limited use, and a Trustpilot reviewer described the membrane on an older Downpour Eco wearing through. Another owner found the main zip jams in the fabric behind it. A 2.5-layer shell trades long-term toughness for weight and price.

Pick it if

  • You want a light, packable waterproof for walks
  • You value underarm vents on climbs

Pass if

  • You carry a heavy pack for days in rain
  • You want a chest pocket
3Best for layering

Men’s Nexus Pull-On

A slim, stretchy half-zip in Rab’s Thermic G fleece, weighing 252g, and the best-reviewed thing in this guide.

The Nexus is a plain, useful midlayer: a slim half-zip in Thermic G, a recycled polyester fleece with a grid-like backer, with a deep venting zip, a close collar, double cuffs and a zipped chest pocket. It weighs 252g and is meant for hikes, climbs and scrambles where you warm up and cool down repeatedly. At £70 it is one of the cheapest ways into Rab.

It has dozens of reviews and very few complaints, but those few agree. Two three-star reviewers say the fabric pilled within weeks, one of them in two colours, and a four-star owner noticed bobbling after two weeks of wear and two washes. Others say it fits small compared with earlier Rab tops. If you like room underneath, go up a size.

Pick it if

  • You want a light fleece that breathes when you work hard
  • You like a slim fit under a shell

Pass if

  • You want a fleece that stays looking new
  • You prefer a relaxed fit
4Best for damp days

Men’s Cirrus Flex Insulated Hooded Jacket

Synthetic PrimaLoft insulation that recovers when damp, with stretch fleece side panels, for days when down is the wrong choice.

Down loses its warmth when it gets wet, which is why many British walkers prefer synthetic insulation. The Cirrus Flex uses recycled PrimaLoft Silver RISE in a 20D Pertex Quantum shell, with Thermic stretch fleece side panels that breathe on climbs, a hood designed to fit under a helmet and two zipped hand pockets. It weighs 446g in a medium and is cut slim.

Owners rate it highly. The criticisms are specific: one returned it because the fleece side panels let rain in, and another found the hand pockets stretch out of shape with anything heavier than a packet of tissues. A French reviewer found the upper arms too roomy. Wear a shell over it in rain, and keep the phone elsewhere.

Pick it if

  • You want insulation that copes with damp
  • You run warm and want fleece panels to vent

Pass if

  • You want to wear it alone in rain
  • You load your pockets with heavy items
5Best for wild camping

Neutrino Down Sleeping Bag (0°C)

The Neutrino bags are still hand-filled in Derbyshire, and this one carries 200g of 800-fill European goose down in a 10D and 20D Pertex Quantum shell, with helix-shaped baffles to stop the down shifting, sidewall baffles for side sleepers and a two-way zip. It weighs 700g and packs to 16 by 30cm. The regular is £370; the second size listed costs £390.

Read the temperature carefully. Under the ISO standard it is rated comfort 5°C, limit 0°C, so the 0°C in the name is the point at which a warm sleeper is merely bearable. Rab scores it one out of five for the range of environments it suits. The only review on its page found it flimsy-feeling, if as light as expected. Treat it as a spring-to-autumn bag.

Pick it if

  • You carry your bed on your back and count grams
  • You camp from late spring to early autumn

Pass if

  • You sleep cold or camp in winter
  • You want a tough bag for rough use
6Best for women walkers

Women’s Microlight Alpine Down Hoody

The women’s cut of the Microlight Alpine, with 137g of recycled 700-fill down and a weight of 375g in a size 10.

The women’s Microlight Alpine has the same build as the men’s: recycled 700-fill down with a hydrophobic finish, a 30D Pertex Quantum shell, zoned baffles, a wired hood peak, a chest pocket and two zipped hand pockets, one of which doubles as a storage pocket. In a size 10 it weighs 375g with 137g of down, and has a 66cm back length.

There are only a few reviews so far and they are positive about warmth and weight. The reservations are about shape and colour. One reviewer found the straight cut puffs up above wider hips, and another, on her second, said the colours look paler or browner in person than on screen. If you have a curvier figure, check the size guide or try one on at a stockist.

Pick it if

  • You want a packable down layer for walks and travel
  • You layer it under a waterproof

Pass if

  • You want a tailored, shaped cut
  • You will choose purely on colour from a photo

Working out which one is yours

1Down or synthetic

Down, as in the Microlight, gives the most warmth for its weight and packs small, but loses much of its loft when soaked; Rab treats it to resist moisture, which helps without making it waterproof. Synthetic insulation, as in the Cirrus Flex, is a little heavier for the warmth but keeps working when damp. In British hills, where drizzle is the norm, many walkers own one of each, or choose synthetic for wet weekends.

2Use the five-point scores

Every Rab product page rates the item out of five on things such as lightness, durability, insulation, pack size and wind resistance, comparing it only with others in the same category. They are the quickest way to compare two jackets. A three for insulation on a down hoody means a versatile layer, not a winter parka; a three for waterproofing means a jacket for showers rather than storms.

3Read sleeping bag ratings by comfort

Rab’s bags carry ISO comfort, limit and extreme temperatures, and the name usually reflects the limit. The Neutrino 0°C is comfortable to 5°C; the Neutrino -6°C, at £470, is comfortable to 0°C. Choose by the comfort figure, then add a margin if you sleep cold or camp high. The extreme figure is a survival rating and no one should plan a trip around it.

Where Rab wins, and where rivals do

Rab’s strongest argument is candour. Its product pages give weights, hydrostatic heads, fill weights and one-to-five scores that include threes, and a Material Facts panel showing recycled content and where each item is made. The down sleeping bags are still hand-filled in Derbyshire. Delivery is free and quick.

Rivals win elsewhere. Berghaus repairs its kit free and offers free UK returns; Rab charges for both. Mountain Equipment covers similar ground at similar prices, and Montane is lighter and faster. Rab’s Trustpilot rating was 3.6 when we checked. The recent one- and two-star reviews complain of down escaping from Microlights, a paid repair that came back unrepaired, waterproofs that wore through and a guaranteed next-day delivery that took a week.

Your questions, answered

Are Rab returns free?

No, and Rab says so plainly: it does not offer free returns because it thinks they encourage over-ordering. You can use its insured Royal Mail return service for £4, part of which goes to the Outward Bound Trust, or arrange your own. You have 45 days, items must be unused with tags, and the original delivery charge is not refunded. There are no exchanges.

Does Rab repair jackets for free?

Only when the fault is Rab’s. The Rab Promise covers manufacturing defects for the product’s usable lifetime, with a repair or replacement. Accidental damage and wear, such as rips or a worn zip, go through the Service Centre as paid repairs, with a flat £8 delivery charge on top. If free repairs matter to you, Berghaus offers them.

Is the Rab Microlight Alpine warm enough for winter?

For winter walks below the snowline, yes, especially under a waterproof shell. Rab itself scores it three out of five for insulation, and pitches it at climbing, hill walking and general use. For winter mountaineering, long belays or very cold weather, Rab’s warmer down jackets are the better choice.

Rivals worth a look

  • Mountain Equipment is the closest rival, another northern down specialist with a similar range at similar prices.
  • Berghaus is cheaper, offers free UK returns and free repairs, and is less technical at the top end.
  • Montane covers the lighter, faster end of the same market from its base in the North East.
