Berghaus is the sensible default for British walkers who want a waterproof and a fleece that work together and will be mended if they rip. Its InterActive system lets a compatible fleece zip inside a compatible jacket, so the pieces in this guide are chosen to combine.

We picked five from the current UK range: two waterproof jackets at different prices, a fleece each for men and women, and a pair of overtrousers. The headline advice is to check every colour before you buy. When we looked, about a third of the products on the site carried a reduced price, most of them at half, and the same jacket can cost £225 in one colour and much less in another.

The picks, one by one

1Best overall

Men’s Hillwalker 2.0 Interactive Jacket

A two-layer Gore-Tex jacket with a roll-away hood and an InterActive zip, and the best-specified waterproof here for the money.

The Hillwalker 2.0 uses Gore-Tex’s PFAS-free ePE membrane in a two-layer construction with a mesh lining, and Berghaus lists a 28,000mm hydrostatic head, more than double the Deluge’s. There is a double storm flap over the front zip, a roll-away hood with plenty of adjustment, hook-and-loop cuffs, a double hem adjuster and two zipped hand pockets. It weighs 0.63kg. The green was reduced to £157.50 when we checked.

There were no customer reviews on any colour’s product page, so the cautions come from the spec and from Berghaus’s Trustpilot page. Berghaus itself lists the intended use as everyday, commuting and travel, not mountains, and there is no chest pocket. Recent Trustpilot complaints about jackets centre on sizing, including a large that fitted like an XXL.

Yes, if

  • You walk in all weathers and want Gore-Tex
  • You own, or will buy, an InterActive fleece

No, if

  • You need a chest pocket for a map or phone
  • You want a shell for winter mountains
2Best value

Men’s Prism InterActive Polartec Fleece Jacket

The long-running Prism fleece in Polartec Classic, with an InterActive zip to fit inside Berghaus waterproofs, and often half price in some colours.

The Prism is the walking fleece Berghaus is best known for: Polartec Classic polyester, two zipped hand pockets, a single hem drawcord and the InterActive front zip that clips it inside a compatible Berghaus jacket. It weighs 0.434kg and runs from XS to 4XL. The black is £82, but when we checked several other colours were at £40 or £41, which makes it one of the cheapest branded fleeces of its kind.

There are only a handful of customer reviews on the site, nearly all warm, with buyers on their third or fourth. The one sizing complaint is that the medium came up large for someone who is a medium in most brands. The product page says little beyond the basics, so check the size chart’s body measurements against your own.

Yes, if

  • You want a warm layer for cool, dry walks
  • You have an InterActive Berghaus waterproof

No, if

  • You want a fleece that blocks wind on its own
3Best for dog walks

Men’s Deluge Pro 3.0 Waterproof Jacket

A light Hydroshell waterproof with a storm flap and a fixed hood, for everyday rain rather than a day on the fells.

The Deluge Pro 3.0 is Berghaus’s everyday rain jacket, made from its own two-layer Hydroshell fabric rather than Gore-Tex. It has a storm flap over the zip, a fixed hood with single-point adjustment, half-elasticated cuffs, a hem drawcord and two zipped hand pockets. Berghaus lists a 12,000mm hydrostatic head and a weight of 0.34kg, about half that of the Hillwalker. Two colours were reduced to £60 when we checked.

The lowest-rated reviews agree on one fault: the zip. Two buyers say it catches on the flap underneath, another found it sticking within 90 days and was asked to pay the postage to send it for repair, and even a four-star reviewer mentions it. Test the zip as soon as it arrives.

Yes, if

  • You want a light waterproof for town and park
  • You are buying for a budget under £150

No, if

  • You walk for hours in heavy rain
  • You cannot stand a fiddly front zip
4Best for women walkers

Women’s Prism Polartec InterActive Jacket

The women’s Prism: a shaped Polartec Classic fleece that zips into InterActive waterproofs, in UK sizes 6 to 20.

The women’s Prism uses the same Polartec Classic polyester as the men’s, in a cut Berghaus calls flattering, with two zipped hand pockets and the InterActive zip. It weighs 0.393kg and comes in UK sizes 6 to 20. As with the men’s, some colours were reduced to £40 when we checked, and the black was full price.

Reviewers like the warmth and the quality, and the complaints are all about the cut. Several say it is small and fitted: one sent it back and reordered a size up, another went up a size and still found the arms too narrow to get in and out of over anything but a T-shirt. One also doubted that the mesh pockets would last. Order a size up if you plan to wear it over a base layer.

Yes, if

  • You want a close-fitting fleece under a waterproof
  • You have a women’s InterActive jacket already

No, if

  • You like a roomy fleece or have broad arms
5Best for wet legs

Overtrousers are the dull purchase that makes a wet walk bearable, and the Deluge 2.0 is a straightforward pair. They are two-layer Hydroshell with a 12,000mm hydrostatic head, an elasticated waist with side adjustment, articulated legs and three-quarter-length side zips with snaps for venting and pulling on over boots. They weigh 0.374kg and come in 29, 31 and 33-inch leg lengths. Berghaus lists them for everyday, commuting and travel use.

Reviews are good, including from a suit-wearer who uses them for the commute. The weaker ones raise durability and sizing: one owner was on their third pair, which suggests they do not last for ever in the British climate, and a buyer found the size choice confusing and had to return a pair that was too small.

Yes, if

  • You walk or commute in rain over normal trousers
  • You want zips long enough to clear boots

No, if

  • You need overtrousers for winter hill days

Choosing the right one

1Gore-Tex or Hydroshell

The Hillwalker’s Gore-Tex ePE carries a 28,000mm hydrostatic head; the Hydroshell used on the Deluge jacket and trousers lists 12,000mm. Both are waterproof, but the higher figure means more margin over hours of rain and under rucksack straps. For walks of an hour or two the Deluge is enough. For full days out, pay for Gore-Tex, ideally in whichever colour is reduced.

2Buy into the InterActive system

InterActive fleeces zip inside InterActive jackets, which turns two pieces into one warm, waterproof layer and lets you shed the fleece when you warm up. Both Prism fleeces and the Hillwalker jacket here have the zip. Check the product name or description for the word InterActive before buying a pair to combine; the Deluge Pro 3.0 jacket does not mention it.

3Check every colour for the price

Berghaus lists each colour as a separate product with its own price, so the sale is easy to miss. When we checked, the Hillwalker was £225 in black and £157.50 in green, and Prism fleeces ranged from £82 to £40 depending on the colour. Browse the full colour list, and the outlet, before paying the full price on the first colour you see.

4Size from body measurements

The size charts give body measurements, not garment measurements, and reviewers report both extremes: a men’s Prism medium that came up big, a women’s Prism that ran small with tight arms. Measure your chest and compare it with the chart, and remember that a fleece you plan to wear inside a jacket should fit closely enough not to bunch under the shell.

Why buy from Berghaus?

Berghaus’s case rests on its repair service, Repairhaus. It will stitch rips and replace zips at its Sunderland headquarters free, as many times as needed; you pay to post the item in, and it aims to send it back within 21 days. If something cannot be fixed within its expected life (up to six years for waterproofs), it is replaced. UK returns are free too.

Rivals win elsewhere. Rab is more technical at the top end, Craghoppers is cheaper for walking trousers, and Patagonia’s repair programme is older and better known. Berghaus’s weaknesses are price signals and service. So much of the range is discounted that full price is mostly paid by people in a hurry. Its Trustpilot rating was 4.2 when we checked, but the recent one- and two-star reviews describe slow refunds, lost parcels, missing parts of 3-in-1 jackets and sizing that did not match the guide.

Not on our list, and why

Men’s Extrem Vanguard Gore-Tex Jacket

Berghaus’s alpine shell costs £560, two and a half times the Hillwalker, and lists the same 28,000mm hydrostatic head. It has pit zips, a helmet hood and harness-friendly pockets, which matter for winter climbing, not walking. The page calls the fabric 3L Gore-Tex ePE in one line and Gore-Tex Pro in the next, and one colour’s web address still begins title-test. Climbers have specialist options.

Quick questions

Are Berghaus repairs really free?

The repair itself is. Fill in the Repairhaus form, send the item to Sunderland at your own cost, and Berghaus will patch tears, replace zips or re-tape seams without charge, aiming to return it within 21 days. It does not do stain removal, reproofing or burns, and boot re-soling is passed to approved repairers who charge for it. Keep your receipt; it helps if a replacement is needed.

Can I return Berghaus clothing for free?

Yes, from within the UK. Register the return through the portal within 30 days of delivery and you get a prepaid label. Items must be unworn with tags intact, and you will not get the original delivery charge back, so an order under £80 costs you the £4.99 you paid. There are no exchanges; reorder the size you need.

What is Berghaus InterActive?

A zip system that joins a compatible Berghaus fleece or insulated layer to the inside of a compatible Berghaus jacket, so the two work as one coat. It has been around for years, so an older InterActive jacket can usually take a new Prism fleece. Look for InterActive in the product name or description.

Alternatives worth a look

  • Rab is the more technical northern alternative, stronger on down and mountain shells and a little dearer.
  • Craghoppers covers the same walking market for less, with more emphasis on trousers and travel clothing.
