Screwfix was built for tradespeople who know the product code, and it still works best for anyone who shops that way: check stock in the app, pay, and collect at the counter in minutes. The range is enormous, but for a householder the useful part is smaller. A good drill, an SDS for masonry, screws and plugs that will not let you down, and somewhere to put it all.

This guide picks six, from a DeWalt combi drill kit to Screwfix’s own Erbauer, Titan and Essentials ranges. Two things matter more than the price. Register any extended power tool guarantee within 28 days, because Screwfix will not do it for you, and read the one-star reviews, which on this site are unusually specific.

Why each one made the list

1Best overall

DEWALT DCD778M2T-SFGB 18V 2 x 4.0Ah Li-Ion XR Brushless Cordless Combi Drill

This is the drill kit to buy if you only buy one. The DCD778 is DeWalt’s compact brushless combi, with 65Nm of torque, 15 torque settings plus drill and hammer modes, a 13mm keyless chuck, all-metal gearing and an electronic brake. The kit includes two 4.0Ah batteries, a charger and a TSTAK box, and weighs 1.85kg with a battery fitted. When we checked it was £139.99, cut from £199.99.

It has an average of nearly five stars from over 800 reviews, so the complaints are few but consistent. The word that recurs is wobble: several one- and two-star buyers had chucks that ran off-centre and returned them, and one said DeWalt would not cover the chuck under warranty. Check it spins true the day you buy it, while the 30-day return still applies.

Good for you if

  • You want one drill for shelves, flat-pack and the odd brick wall
  • You may add other DeWalt 18V tools later

Not for you if

  • You drill concrete often; an SDS drill is the right tool
2Best value

Erbauer ECCD18-Li 18V Brushless Cordless Compact Combi Drill

Screwfix’s own-brand compact brushless combi, sold as a kit with two 2.0Ah batteries, a charger and a case for under £100.

Erbauer is Screwfix’s middle-ground tool brand, and this compact combi is the sensible way into it. It is short (165mm) and light (1.4kg with a battery), with a brushless motor, 50Nm of torque, 17 torque settings plus drill and hammer, and a 13mm keyless chuck. The £99.99 kit includes two 2.0Ah batteries on the EXT platform, a one-hour charger, a belt clip and a carry case.

None of its 33 reviews was below four stars when we checked, so the weaknesses are on the spec sheet. The gearbox is ABS plastic, there is no brake, and the guarantee is one year against DeWalt’s three. For hanging pictures and building wardrobes that is fine; for heavy, daily use it is the wrong trade-off.

Good for you if

  • You are a first-time buyer on a budget
  • You want something light enough for overhead work

Not for you if

  • You want a long guarantee
  • You already own another brand’s batteries

A combi drill will get through brick, slowly. For concrete, or for lifting tiles and old render, an SDS drill does the job properly, and this Titan is the cheapest sensible way to own one. It is a 1500W corded machine with four modes (drill, hammer drill, chisel and chisel adjustment), 5J of impact energy, a magnesium gearbox and a safety clutch, and the £89.99 price includes a 22-piece set of bits and chisels.

It has only a dozen reviews, mostly from the past few months, and the lowest is a three-star buyer whose drill kept slipping from drill-only into hammer mode with a core bit. The spec sheet adds the rest: 5.12kg, a stated vibration of 17.31m/s², carbon brushes that cannot be replaced, and a one-year guarantee.

Good for you if

  • You have a few heavy masonry jobs a year
  • You want chisel bits included

Not for you if

  • You will use it for hours at a time
  • You need a cordless tool

TurboGold PZ Double-Countersunk Woodscrews Trade Pack 1400 Pcs

Screwfix earned its name selling screws, and a trade pack is the cheapest way to stop running out. This one holds 1,400 screws in nine sizes, from 200 each of the small 3.5mm and 4mm lengths to 100 of the 6 x 100mm. They are zinc-plated, yellow-passivated and wax-coated, with double-countersunk heads and a sharp thread that the page says needs no pilot hole in most timbers. When we checked it was £19.99, down from £29.99.

Two cautions from the page and the reviews. These are rated for indoor use, and one buyer who used them in garden furniture found them rotted and snapped within 18 months. The rarer one-star reviews also report heads that let the bit slip and screws snapping on removal.

Good for you if

  • You do regular indoor woodwork or flat-pack repairs
  • You want the common sizes in one case

Not for you if

  • The job is outdoors: buy exterior-rated screws

Fischer’s DuoPower is the plug to keep in the drawer. It is made from two materials, and depending on the wall it expands, folds or knots, so the same plug is sold as suitable for concrete, solid and perforated brick and plasterboard. The narrow rim stops it slipping into the hole, and the page says you feel when it has set. This pack is 6 x 30mm, for 4 to 5mm screws around 35mm long; screws are not included.

The low-rated reviews tell one story: plasterboard. Several buyers found the plugs spun in the hole or failed to grip in drywall, one reporting four failures in the first ten. In brick and block they are excellent. For anything heavier than a picture in plasterboard, buy a dedicated cavity fixing.

Good for you if

  • Most of your walls are brick or block
  • You want one plug type for general jobs

Not for you if

  • You are fixing into plasterboard
6Best for garages

Essentials 5-Tier Metal Garage Shelving Unit 900mm x 400mm x 1800mm

Once you own a drill and a box of screws, the garage needs shelves. This Essentials unit has a powder-coated steel frame and five adjustable MDF shelves, each rated to 100kg with a 500kg limit for the whole bay, and stands 1800mm tall, 900mm wide and 400mm deep. It can be freestanding or fixed to the wall, and at £27.99 it is hard to argue with.

The reviews are mostly four stars rather than five, and the reason is the same in most of them: it feels flimsy until it is built and fixed to a wall. One buyer called the steel thin and the tabs fiddly, another needed a hammer to join the pieces, and the one one-star review says it damages easily if moved. Screw it to the wall, as the instructions say.

Good for you if

  • You need cheap, adjustable storage in a garage or shed
  • You can fix it to a wall

Not for you if

  • You are storing engine parts or other heavy metal

How to choose

1Pick a battery platform first

A cordless drill is really a ticket into a battery system. DeWalt’s 18V XR batteries fit a huge range of DeWalt tools; Erbauer’s EXT batteries belong to an own-brand range sold through Screwfix. If you already own batteries for one maker, buy a bare tool from the same range and save the cost of a kit. If you own none, choose the platform you are happy to stay with for the next mower, sander or saw.

2Read the guarantee line, then register

Guarantees differ more than prices. The DeWalt kit carries three years, but only if you register it online; the Erbauer, Titan and Essentials picks carry one. Screwfix’s returns page is blunt that extended power tool warranties must be registered within 28 days of purchase. Do it in the car park, and keep the order reference, which the stores ask for on returns.

3Check indoor or outdoor before buying fixings

The product pages state whether screws are for indoor or outdoor use, and the reviews show what happens when people ignore it. The TurboGold trade pack is indoor-rated; decking and fencing need exterior screws from a different shelf. Plugs work the same way: the DuoPower is fine in brick, while the low-rated reviews come almost entirely from people who used it in plasterboard.

4Look at the refurbished listings

Screwfix sells refurbished power tools alongside new ones, and they appear on the product pages. When we checked, a refurbished version of the DeWalt kit in this guide was £111.99 against £139.99 new. Stock depends on what has come back, so the choice changes from week to week, but for a drill that will live in a garage it is worth a look.

Where Screwfix wins, and where rivals do

Screwfix’s advantage is speed and reach. Hundreds of branches, stock you can check in the app before you leave the house, and collection the site describes as taking as little as a minute. Free returns to any branch within 30 days, and a free repair service through the stores for power tools from DeWalt, Makita, Bosch, Milwaukee, Erbauer, Titan and others, put it ahead of most online sellers.

Rivals win elsewhere. Toolstation runs the same counter model with noticeably happier reviewers, and B&Q and Wickes are better for paint, timber and anything you want to see first. Screwfix’s Trustpilot score was 2.6 out of 5 when we checked, and the recent complaints are about the logistics rather than the products: next-day collections that took a week, failed deliveries, and replies that send you to an email address.

FAQs

Can anyone shop at Screwfix, or is it trade only?

Anyone can. There is a trade credit account and a toggle at the top of every page that shows prices with or without VAT, which tells you who the shop was built for, but householders pay the same shelf prices. The prices in this guide include VAT. Most people find the quickest route is the app: check stock, pay, and collect at the counter.

What happens if a power tool breaks after 30 days?

Take it to a store. Screwfix runs a free repair service with its main power tool suppliers, and a store will arrange the repair. For Titan, Erbauer and Mac Allister garden tools and pressure washers the repairs go through a partner, Apelson. If the tool carries an extended manufacturer guarantee, that only applies if you registered it within 28 days.

Is next-day collection reliable?

Usually, but not always. Items not in your branch are sent from the distribution centre for the next day if you order by the evening cut-off. Recent one-star Trustpilot reviews describe orders shown as next day that took a week to arrive at the store. If a job depends on it, choose an item marked Collect Today, or check stock at a second branch.

Other brands to consider

  • Toolstation runs the same order-and-collect model from fewer branches, with far happier customer reviews.
  • B&Q is the sister company with aisles to browse, better for paint, timber and garden.
