Rapha suits road cyclists who ride often enough to notice what a good chamois or a well-cut jersey does over three hours, and who are happy to pay above dhb or Van Rysel prices for it. Its product pages are unusually useful: each garment carries a temperature range and one-to-five ratings for breathability, insulation, wind and water.
This guide picks six things from the current UK range, mostly from the Core collection, plus one Pro Team upgrade and a gift. The advice is simple. Get the size right first time, because there are no exchanges and only 14 days to return unworn kit, and check the sale colours, which are often cheaper than the full prices quoted here.
Bib shorts are where cycling kit earns its money, and the Core pair is the sensible place to start. They are 79% recycled nylon and 21% elastane, with a dense knit on the main panels, flatlock seams, laser-cut silicone leg grippers and a single-density Rapha chamois. Rapha rates them for 12 to 20°C, so they are a spring-to-autumn short in Britain. Several colours were reduced to £75 or £87 when we checked.
Owners rate them highly, and only a few reviews are negative. The one that matters is about the pad: a rider found the chamois uncomfortable after two or three hours and preferred cheaper Van Rysel and dhb shorts. Another was advised to size down and could not get them on. If your rides are long, the pad is the thing to weigh up.
Good for you if
You ride two or three times a week, mostly under three hours
You want Rapha quality without race compression
Not for you if
You regularly ride all day; consider the Pro Team or Brevet pads
2Best value
Men’s Core Jersey
A regular-fit summer jersey in recycled polyester with three rear pockets, in more colours than anything else Rapha sells.
The Core Jersey is the cheapest way into Rapha’s riding kit: 100% recycled polyester, set-in sleeves, three rear pockets, a lighter shaped collar and a regular fit that Rapha says is less compressive than Pro Team. It is honestly labelled as a warm-weather garment, rated for 18 to 32°C and one out of five for wind and water resistance. It came in a dozen colours when we checked, and a few were reduced to between £53 and £62.
The low ratings come mostly from loyal customers. Several say the current version is smaller and less carefully finished than older Core jerseys, citing single stitching on the arms, a lighter hem band and no zipped pocket. Others found a large short in the body. Try the size guide against a jersey you own.
Good for you if
You want a summer jersey that is not race-tight
You like plenty of colour choice
Not for you if
You want a zipped valuables pocket
You ride mostly below 15°C
3Best upgrade
Men’s Pro Team Bib Shorts III - Regular
Rapha’s race bib shorts: compressive Italian woven fabric, a 15mm chamois built without seams and a medium pair that weighs 186g.
The Pro Team III is the bib short Rapha’s reputation was built on. The main body is 78% recycled nylon and 22% elastane in a woven Italian fabric, the chamois is a 15mm pad built without seams, with denser foam than before, the hem is laser cut, and a men’s medium weighs 186g. Rapha rates them for 10 to 35°C and describes the fit as compressive. A long-leg version adds 3cm.
Reviews are strong and the complaints few. One rider found the pad not comfortable enough for three hours or more, the same criticism levelled at the Core pair, which is not what £250 should buy. Another received a ripped pair, and their replacement order was cancelled by mistake. Because the cut is tight and returns must be unworn, read the size guide twice.
Good for you if
You race or ride fast group rides
You already know your Rapha size
Not for you if
You prefer a relaxed fit
You are unsure of your size and cannot try them on
4Best for wet commutes
Men’s Core Rain Jacket III
A packable, fully waterproof shell with taped seams and a two-way zip, at well under half the price of Rapha’s Gore-Tex jackets.
The Core Rain Jacket is a woven, seam-taped waterproof in recycled polyester, made from lightweight Japanese fabric that packs small. A two-way AquaGuard zip lets you reach the jersey pockets underneath, and the armband and logo are reflective. Rapha rates it for 1 to 15°C and five out of five for water resistance. It is not Gore-Tex, and the page gives it three out of five for breathability.
There were no one- or two-star reviews when we checked, but the three-star ones agree: it runs small. Riders who are a small in other performance kit found the small figure-hugging, and a medium was tight across the chest over a base layer. Others miss outside pockets and a hood, and one found it sweaty. Size up if you will wear it over winter layers.
Good for you if
You want a rain shell that fits in a jersey pocket
Your wet rides are commutes rather than all-day epics
Not for you if
You need a jacket for long days in steady rain
You want pockets on the jacket itself
5Best for cold mornings
Men’s Core Winter Tights With Pad
Brushed-back fleece bib tights with a padded seat and reflective tabs, for the months when shorts and leg warmers stop being enough.
These are Rapha’s everyday winter bib tights: a brushed-back nylon and elastane fleece, lightweight stretch bib straps, contoured seams and the single-density Classic chamois, with reflective tabs for dark evenings. Despite the name, Rapha rates them for 6 to 12°C, which makes them an autumn and spring tight in most of Britain rather than a deep-winter one.
They are well reviewed overall, but the low ratings repeat two complaints. Several riders found panels and seams that bunch around the knees, and a few disliked the pad, calling it hard or too small. One noted they are not usable much below 5°C, and another found they fit larger than the same size in Core shorts. Wear them with a base layer and overshoes when it is properly cold.
Good for you if
You ride through autumn and want one pair of tights
You ride on dark evenings and want reflective details
Not for you if
You ride regularly below 5°C
6Best gift
Rapha Cap II
The classic quartered cotton cycling cap that sits under a helmet, now in two sizes, and the cheapest Rapha thing worth giving.
A cotton cap is the most Rapha thing you can buy for the least money. The Cap II has the quartered design, a grosgrain stripe, embroidered logos and a reshaped brim that keeps rain and sun out of your eyes under a helmet. It is cotton, machine washable at 30°C, and comes in two sizes: small-medium for heads of 53 to 58cm and medium-large for 58 to 64cm. Two colours were reduced when we checked.
Its average rating is the lowest of the picks here, and almost all of the complaints are about size. Buyers with heads inside the stated range found both sizes tight, a few cut the elastic, and one found the ribbon at the brim left a welt under a helmet. Measure the recipient’s head first.
Good for you if
You want a small present a cyclist will use
You know the recipient’s head measurement
Not for you if
The recipient has a large head; both sizes run small

Before you buy: how to pick
1Read the temperature range first
Every Rapha product page states the temperatures a garment is designed for, and they are more useful than the names. The Core Jersey is rated 18 to 32°C, the Core Bib Shorts 12 to 20°C, the Core Rain Jacket 1 to 15°C and the Core Winter Tights 6 to 12°C. Build a British riding wardrobe by covering those bands, and remember that anything rated one out of five for wind will need a shell over it on most autumn mornings.
2Core, Pro Team or Brevet
Core is the regular-fit everyday range and the cheapest; Rapha recommends your normal size. Pro Team is cut for racing, compressive and roughly double the price. Brevet is the long-distance range, with more pockets and reflective detail. Most riders who do not race will be happiest in Core, and the reviews suggest the Pro Team chamois does not solve every comfort problem on its own.
3Size for the cut, not the label
Reviews of the Core Jersey, the rain jacket and the cap all report pieces coming up small, and returns are only accepted unworn within 14 days of receipt. Use Rapha’s size guide and compare the measurements with kit you already own. If you can get to a Rapha Clubhouse, trying on in person avoids the problem entirely, though online orders cannot be returned there.
Rapha against the rest
Rapha’s best argument is a promise rather than a fabric. If you crash in its riding kit in the UK, it will try to repair the garment free and post it back, up to five repairs a year. Few clothing brands stand behind kit you have fallen off in. The product pages are also more candid than most, with temperature ranges and low scores where they are deserved.
Rivals win on price and on service. dhb and Van Rysel cost far less, and one Core bib short reviewer preferred both. Le Col and Castelli match Rapha for racing kit. Rapha’s Trustpilot score was 3.9 when we checked, and the recent one-star reviews are about refunds that took weeks, lost parcels, wrong items and an automated assistant that could not help. There are no exchanges, so a wrong item or size means a refund and a new order.

The UK product pages say orders can be returned within 14 days completely free of charge, using the online returns portal. Rapha’s help centre adds that a flat £5 fee is deducted in some markets, shown in the portal before you confirm. Items must be unworn and unwashed, and refunds are processed within 14 days of the warehouse receiving them.
Can I exchange Rapha kit for a different size?
Not for online orders. Rapha withdrew direct exchanges, so you return the wrong size for a refund and place a new order, which can mean paying twice for a while and risking the new size selling out. If you are torn between two sizes, ordering both at once and returning one is the safer route.
How does Rapha’s free crash repair work?
Fill in the repair form on Rapha’s help centre, clean the garment and post it at your own cost with proof of purchase. Rapha repairs crash damage free and returns it by standard post, usually within 4 to 6 weeks, sometimes in a different colour. It may decline worn-out kit, chamois damage or peeling logos, and offers a voucher in some cases.
Can I buy Rapha clothing with Cyclescheme?
Yes. Choose an accessories package on the Cyclescheme website, and once your certificate arrives, send it to Rapha through the contact form. Rapha replies with a voucher code to use at checkout. Sale items and bundles are included, but limited editions, gift cards and RCC membership are not.
Rivals worth a look
Le Col is the closest British rival, similar in price and ambition, with a racing pedigree of its own.
dhb covers the same ground for far less money, plainer to look at and perfectly serviceable.
Castelli is the Italian choice for race kit, stocked by enough shops that trying on is easy.
