Toolstation is the trade counter that householders tend to find second and then keep using. It sells the big tool brands, but its own ranges are where the value sits: Hawksmoor for the garden and Flume for plumbing, alongside the heating chemicals and valves that plumbers buy by the box.

This guide picks six things worth collecting, from a cordless mower to a £9.69 radiator valve, plus one Hawksmoor tool we would leave on the shelf. The headline advice is about the small print rather than the price. Check whether an item ships direct from a supplier, because that changes how you return it, and note that the Hawksmoor battery claim has exceptions.

The 6 we'd buy, in detail

1Best overall

Hawksmoor 36V Brushless Cordless Lawnmower 37cm 2 x 4.0Ah

A brushless cordless mower that runs on two 18V batteries, sold with both batteries and a charger, and rated highly by more than 300 buyers.

This is the Toolstation product with the best case for itself. It is a hand-pushed cordless mower with a brushless motor powered by two 18V, 4.0Ah batteries (both included, with a charger), seven cutting heights from 25 to 75mm, a 40-litre grass box and a rear roller for stripes. It carries a two-year guarantee. One oddity: the page lists a 36cm cutting width in its bullet points and 37cm everywhere else.

Its average is close to five stars over more than 300 reviews. The low ones say it is heavy (about 12.3kg) to turn on a small lawn or lift up steps, that the housing is mostly plastic, and that the grass box lid can sit badly. One owner’s mower failed after a month, and another found the charger overheated.

Good for you if

  • You want to give up the cable or the petrol can
  • Your lawn is level and medium-sized

Not for you if

  • You have to carry the mower up steps
2Best value

Hawksmoor All Steel Digging Spade

A forged-blade, all-steel spade with a wooden D-grip and a two-year guarantee, for less than a takeaway.

The details

Construction
all steel, forged blade

Check price at Toolstation

Spades break where the blade meets the shaft, and an all-steel spade removes the wooden shaft that usually goes first. This one has a solid forged blade, a tubular steel shaft (28 inches, 711mm overall) and a D-shaped handle with a wooden grip. It carries a two-year guarantee and, at £17.99, costs little more than a cheap wooden-handled spade.

The trade-off is weight, and it is the most common complaint: at 2.67kg, several reviewers found it too heavy for general garden use, and one returned it for that reason. Others found it blunt for cutting turf. A handful of low ratings report weak spots, a handle coming away and a weld that needed repair, but they are a small minority among over 200 reviews.

Good for you if

  • You have broken a spade on stony ground or roots
  • You are digging footings or clearing a plot

Not for you if

  • You want a light border spade for planting
3Best for radiators

Flume Contract TRV & Lockshield 15mm

A thermostatic radiator valve and matching lockshield for 15mm pipe, with frost protection and a five-year guarantee, for under £10.

Check price at Toolstation

Flume is Toolstation’s own plumbing brand, and this TRV pair is the product behind its reputation, with more than 500 reviews. It is a brass, bi-directional thermostatic valve for vertical or horizontal mounting, with six settings from 6°C to 28°C and frost protection, plus the lockshield for the other end of the radiator. The TRV is made to EN215 and Flume gives a five-year guarantee.

The one-star reviews cluster around fit. Several buyers found the radiator tails’ threads too loose to seal even with plenty of PTFE tape, one valve snapped while being fitted, and others found it would not match their existing pipework. Check your pipe size and the tail thread on the radiator before you start, and keep the old tails.

Good for you if

  • You are swapping manual valves for thermostatic ones
  • You want a cheap, widely used valve

Not for you if

  • You are not confident draining and refilling a system
4Best for heating systems

Fernox F1 Central Heating Inhibitor & Protector 500ml

The inhibitor most installers use, in a 500ml bottle that treats up to 130 litres of system water, or about 16 radiators.

Corrosion inhibitor is the least exciting thing you can buy for a house and one of the more useful. Fernox F1 protects mixed-metal heating systems against corrosion and limescale, with pH buffering to keep the water between 6.5 and 8.5, and the page says it also stops frequent venting of radiators. One 500ml bottle treats up to 130 litres, roughly 16 radiators. When we checked it was £15.59, down from £19.49.

The weakness is that you cannot see it work, and one three-star reviewer put that bluntly. The page itself says concentration should be checked every year at the boiler service. Low-rated reviews are otherwise about Toolstation: old stock in a previous label, and a sharp price rise between catalogues.

Good for you if

  • You have drained or added radiators
  • Your engineer has not topped it up at the service

Not for you if

  • You want to dose without draining; the 400ml Express aerosol suits that
5Best for flooded ground

Hawksmoor Dirty Water Pump 1100W

A submersible stainless steel pump that shifts up to 308 litres a minute and handles solids up to 20mm, with a float switch and thermal cut-out.

If water collects where it should not, this is the cheap insurance. It is an 1100W submersible pump with a stainless steel body, rated at up to 308 litres a minute, a maximum lift of 8m and a depth of 7m, with a float switch, a thermal cut-out, a 10m cable and a two-year guarantee. It takes solids up to 20mm, but the page warns against sand and continuous use, and asks for a ten-minute rest every hour.

Read two things before buying. The page says it is non-returnable once used, and one buyer whose pump spluttered on first use was refused an exchange for that reason. And several one-star reviewers say the impeller and its housing are plastic and break when small stones get in, while another found the float switch slow to trigger.

Good for you if

  • You need to empty a pond, pool or flooded footing
  • You can keep stones and sand out of the intake

Not for you if

  • You need a pump to run continuously
6Best for small hedges

Hawksmoor 18V 51cm Cordless Hedge Trimmer 1 x 2.0Ah

A light 18V cordless trimmer with a 51cm blade, sold with a battery and a 50-minute charger, for tidying a garden hedge twice a year.

For a small garden hedge, a cordless trimmer is easier than any cable, and this one weighs about 2.6kg. It has a 51cm dual-action hardened steel blade with a 16mm cutting capacity, a dual safety switch and a blade sheath, and comes with one 2.0Ah battery and a 50-minute charger. The guarantee is two years.

Treat it as a light-duty tool. The motor is brushed, and the one-star reviews include several that smoked or burned out after a few sessions, plus a charger that never charged. Note also one buyer’s experience: the page says Hawksmoor batteries work across the cordless range, but he found this battery did not fit the strimmer he bought alongside it. Check compatibility in store before buying a bare tool.

Good for you if

  • You have a low hedge or a few shrubs
  • You want no cable and little weight

Not for you if

  • Your hedge is thick, tall or long

Where Toolstation wins, and where rivals do

Toolstation does almost exactly what Screwfix does, with fewer branches and much happier customers. Its Trustpilot score was 4.7 out of 5, rated Excellent, when we checked, against Screwfix’s 2.6. Collection takes as little as five minutes, delivery is free over £40, and the own brands are good value: Flume valves and Hawksmoor garden tools carry multi-year guarantees that many own-brand tools do not.

Rivals win in places. Screwfix has more branches, so it is more likely to be round the corner, and B&Q or Wickes are better if you want to browse. Recent one-star reviews describe next-day collections running late, wrong items sent, and a tube of silicone sold without the nozzle to use it. The phone line is weekdays only, though webchat runs around the clock.

Choosing the right one

1Check who is sending it

Some Toolstation items ship direct from the supplier, and the product page says so beneath the delivery button. That matters: supplier-delivered items cannot be returned to a branch, and an unwanted one costs a £9 collection fee, more for bulky goods. For small stock bought at the counter, the 30-day guarantee works simply. For big items, read that line first.

2Do not assume the batteries match

Hawksmoor’s pages say its batteries and chargers work across the cordless range, and the 36V mower runs on two 18V packs. But at least one reviewer found the trimmer’s battery would not fit the strimmer he bought with it. Before buying a bare tool to share a battery, ask at the counter or check the compatible-with line in the specification table.

3Read the returns line on the page

The general rule is 30 days for unused, unmarked items in their packaging. The exceptions are on the product pages: the dirty water pump cannot be returned once used, bespoke cut or mixed items are excluded, and petrol tools must be drained and aired for 48 hours. Postage is refunded only for faulty or wrong items, so an unwanted parcel costs you the trip to a branch or the collection fee.

4Time the Club discount

Toolstation Club is free and gives 5% off for your first month. To keep it, you must spend £75 a month; at £150 a month you get free next-business-day delivery. For an occasional customer it is effectively a one-month discount, so join in the month you plan a bigger order, such as a mower or a batch of valves, rather than signing up for a small one.

What we'd leave on the shelf

Hawksmoor 1010W 45cm Long Reach Electric Hedge Trimmer

At £122.99, a corded long-reach trimmer with a pivoting head and a 2.59m reach. Its reviews average about four stars, well below the rest of the range, and the one-star complaints repeat: heavy (6.2kg) and badly balanced, slow blades, and a safety switch that needs a hard grip to stay on. For tall hedges, a lighter trimmer and a platform is the better buy.

Your questions, answered

Is Toolstation cheaper than Screwfix?

Sometimes, not always. The two price many of the same branded products closely, and each runs its own promotions; one recent Toolstation reviewer complained that its mortar cost about twice a nearby rival’s. For a big basket it is worth pricing both. Where Toolstation stands out is its own brands, Flume and Hawksmoor, and its customer reviews.

Can I return a Toolstation item I have used?

Not if it is simply unwanted: the 30-day guarantee covers unused, unmarked items in their packaging. Faulty items are different and can be refunded, replaced or repaired. Some products, such as the Hawksmoor dirty water pump, state on the page that they cannot be returned once used, for health and safety reasons. Read that before buying.

Do Hawksmoor batteries fit every Hawksmoor tool?

The product pages say the batteries and chargers can be used across the Hawksmoor cordless range, and the 36V mower runs on two of the 18V packs. One buyer reported that the battery supplied with the 18V hedge trimmer would not fit the strimmer he bought with it. Check the compatible-with line on the page, or ask in store, before relying on it.

Alternatives worth a look
