Lookfantastic is a beauty warehouse: more than 22,000 products and 660 brands, by its own count, with a discount on a large share of them in any given week. It suits people who know what they use and want it cheaper, rather than people looking to discover something new.

So this guide sticks to staples: a ceramide cream, a sunscreen, a cleansing balm, a hair oil, a pair of sponges and the advent calendar, each read on the UK product page with its lowest-rated reviews. What each product does is the brand’s claim. The headline advice: buy repeat items on auto-replenish or in a sale, ignore the “worth” figures, and do not open anything you might return.

CeraVe Moisturising Cream Pot with Ceramides for Dry to Very Dry Skin

The pharmacy-brand ceramide cream in three sizes, cheapest per gram in the big 454g tub, and exactly the kind of repeat buy this shop does best.

This is the plain tub of cream that sits in a great many British bathrooms, and the product page sets it out simply: a rich cream for face and body, with three ceramides and hyaluronic acid, for dry to very dry skin. The up-to-24-hour hydration claim is CeraVe’s. When we checked, the 454g tub was £13.13 against an RRP of £17.50, with 177ml and 340g sizes below it, and an extra 5% code on top.

Its 605 reviews were mostly five-star. The low ones are about texture and reactions: one buyer found it thick and sticky, another said it left her skin tight, and several describe stinging, an itchy rash or a crop of spots. A tub is a lot to waste, so start with the 177ml if you have never used it.

Yes, if

  • You want one cream for face and body
  • You buy the same moisturiser every month or two

No, if

  • You dislike thick, slow-absorbing creams
  • You have never used CeraVe and react easily

Real Techniques 2 Pack Miracle Complexion Sponge

Two of the best-known budget makeup sponges, with a rounded side, a precision tip and a flat edge, and a title that oversells them.

Makeup sponges wear out, which makes them a natural Lookfantastic buy. The page describes a three-sided sponge: rounded sides for stippling foundation over large areas, a pointed tip for small ones, and a flat edge for blending around the eyes and nose. Two cost £11.50.

Read the title with care. It says “Worth £14.00”, yet the page shows the RRP as £11.50, the same as the price, so there was no saving when we checked. The reviews were strong, with only three below three stars, but the critical ones agree on a few points: they soak up more foundation than a Beautyblender, they feel rougher or bouncier than some prefer, and one buyer thought the pair smaller than the single sponge.

Yes, if

  • You replace sponges every few months
  • You want a cheaper alternative to a Beautyblender

No, if

  • You use expensive foundation and hate wastage
3Best for daily sunscreen

La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMune 400 Invisible Fluid Non-Perfumed Suncream SPF50+

La Roche-Posay’s thin, fast-drying SPF50+ fluid, discounted when we checked, with a run of recent complaints about smell and reactions.

This is the facial sunscreen many people keep on repeat, and it was £16.80 against an RRP of £21 for 50ml when we checked. The product page lists it as SPF50+, broad spectrum, water, sweat and sand resistant, and leaving no white cast; those are La Roche-Posay’s descriptions, built around its Mexoryl 400 filter. The page tells you to shake it, apply generously and reapply frequently.

It had 2,750 reviews, and the low ones are worth reading before you rely on it. Long-time users report reactions to the current formula around the eyes or nose, one says it is no longer fragrance-free despite the non-perfumed name, and another found the smell had changed. Others mention a box that arrived open, a gritty tube and a small bottle for the price.

Yes, if

  • You want a thin facial sunscreen that sits under makeup
  • You already use it without problems

No, if

  • You have reacted to sunscreen filters before
  • You need a guaranteed fragrance-free formula

Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm 100g

Elemis’s cleansing balm is one of the most-reviewed products on Lookfantastic, with more than 4,500 reviews averaging close to five stars. The page describes a balm that turns to oil and then to a milk, built on sweet almond oil with starflower, elderberry and nine essential oils including lavender and eucalyptus. It was full price, £55, when we checked.

Look at the footnote. The percentages quoted (96% felt skin softened, for instance) come from an independent user trial in 2012 of 54 people over two weeks. The one-star reviews are about the smell, which several compare to machine grease, a film that leaves skin feeling unclean, and redness or spots on oily skin. One reviewer reported a reaction to rose.

Yes, if

  • You wear long-lasting makeup or SPF every day
  • You have normal to dry skin

No, if

  • You dislike strong essential-oil scents
  • You have oily skin or avoid almond oil

Kérastase Elixir Ultime Hair Oil L’Huile Originale

This is the salon hair oil people reorder, and Lookfantastic sells it three ways: a 30ml bottle, a refillable 75ml glass bottle (£46.80 against £58.50 when we checked) and a 75ml refill capsule. The page suggests one or two drops on wet or dry hair, as a pre-blow-dry oil or a finisher, and quotes heat protection to 230°C and up to four days of frizz control, both from Kérastase’s instrumental tests.

Its 1,606 reviews average well, but the one-star reviews are almost all the same complaint: the reformulated version. Long-time users say the new oil is thinner, greasier and heavier on the hair, smells different, and comes in a smaller bottle at a higher price. If you loved the old one, try the 30ml first.

Yes, if

  • You have thick, dry or frizz-prone hair
  • You will use the auto-replenish discount

No, if

  • You have fine hair that gets greasy easily
  • You want the pre-reformulation oil

The LOOKFANTASTIC Beauty Advent Calendar

Lookfantastic’s own calendar lists every product and the value it puts on each, which makes it easy to judge. There are 27 products behind 25 drawers, 19 full size, including Clinique Moisture Surge 50ml, Benefit Roller Lash, MAC Fix+ and Aveda’s Cherry Almond shampoo and conditioner, plus a 30ml Elemis Pro-Collagen Night Cream. It costs £120 and dispatches within five to seven days.

Two cautions. The £665 “worth” includes items such as a single pair of the shop’s own reusable eye patches valued at £15 and an eye cream at £98, so count only what you would buy. And its near-perfect rating came from reviews mostly written in September, before many reviewers had received theirs.

Yes, if

  • You want a calendar of usable, well-known products
  • You like to see every item before you buy

No, if

  • You want prestige skincare rather than everyday staples

How to choose

1Auto-replenish anything you finish

Products like the Kérastase oil carry an auto-replenish option: 10% off the first order, 15% off every repeat, free delivery after the first, and you choose the interval (four months was the recommended setting on the hair oil). You can cancel or delay it. For a cream or oil you finish on a schedule, that beats waiting for a sale, though a big sitewide event can still undercut it.

2Check the RRP, not the worth

Many titles carry a “worth” figure that is not the price you are being offered a discount from. The Real Techniques two-pack said worth £14.00 while showing an RRP of £11.50 and a price of £11.50. The useful numbers are the crossed-out recommended retail price and the current price beneath it. Compare those with another shop before deciding a deal is a deal.

3Only open what you are sure of

Returns must be started within 30 days of receipt and the item must be unopened, unused and sealed. There are no exchanges: to change a shade you buy again and return the first. Faulty or wrong items are handled case by case through your account, with photo or video evidence. For new sunscreens or actives, buy the smallest size, or try a sample elsewhere first.

Where Lookfantastic wins, and where rivals do

Lookfantastic wins on price and range. Big pharmacy, salon and premium brands sit side by side, many of them discounted when we looked, with an extra code on top; tracked delivery is free over £25, and a year of Premier Delivery costs £5.95. Its auto-replenish option takes 10% off the first order and 15% off repeats. Trustpilot rated it Excellent, 4.6 on more than 433,000 reviews, when we checked.

Rivals win elsewhere. Cult Beauty, under the same THG ownership, is better edited; Boots has shops for returns and testers. Lookfantastic is weaker on service: contact is by message and live chat only, exchanges are not offered, and October’s one-star reviews describe missing items, parcels never received and a customer sent the wrong La Roche-Posay product twice before a refund was agreed.

Questions people ask

Is Lookfantastic’s Premier Delivery worth it?

For most regular customers, yes. When we read the terms in October 2026 it cost £5.95, the same as one next-day order, and gave a year of free delivery on every option except same day. Note that subscriptions bought since 18 September 2025 renew automatically unless you cancel, it covers England, Wales and Scotland only, and orders must be at least £10.

Can I exchange a shade at Lookfantastic?

No. The returns page says exchanges are not offered: you place a new order for the shade you want and return the original, unopened, for a refund within 30 days of receipt. Once a product has been opened or swatched it cannot be returned unless it is faulty, damaged or wrong, which is handled case by case with photographic evidence.

What is Try Me First at Lookfantastic?

Selected fragrances carry a Try Me First badge. Buy one and a matching sample comes free, so you can wear the sample before opening the full bottle, which stays returnable while sealed under the normal 30-day policy. When we looked, the list leaned towards big designer houses such as Valentino, Viktor & Rolf, Balmain and YSL. The page says the sample offer runs while stocks last.

Who owns Lookfantastic, and is it linked to Cult Beauty?

Its about page says it is part of THG Holdings plc, and Cult Beauty’s footer names The Hut.com Ltd, a THG company, as its operator. That explains why the two sites share a returns partner, a delivery table and a help-centre design. Lookfantastic is the bigger, more discount-led of the two.

Alternatives worth a look

  • Cult Beauty is the more selective sibling under the same owner, with fewer discounts and a sharper list of newer brands.
  • Boots covers much of the same pharmacy and mainstream ground, with high-street shops for testers and returns.
  • Space NK is the place to try expensive makeup at a counter before buying it more cheaply elsewhere.
