Le Creuset’s French-made enamelled cast iron is still the reason to shop here, and the on-site reviews back that up: the round, shallow and oval casseroles all average close to 4.8 out of 5. The picture changes once you leave cast iron. Some of the frying pans and kettles score far lower, and most of the brand’s angriest Trustpilot reviews are about non-stick pans and refused guarantee claims.

This guide picks four cooking pieces and two stoneware buys, and names two products to skip. The weaknesses come from each product’s lowest-rated reviews on lecreuset.co.uk, which run on Bazaarvoice and can be sorted lowest first.

Cast Iron Round Casserole

If you buy one piece of Le Creuset, make it this. The round casserole goes on any hob including induction, into the oven or under the grill, and its knob is rated to 260°C. It comes in eight sizes, from 18cm (1.8 litres) to 34cm (12 litres), with prices rising steeply through the range; the 24cm, which suits four people, was £335 when we checked and weighs 4.36kg empty. The brand’s own reviews average 4.8 from almost 400.

The one-star reviews are few but consistent. One buyer found a small defect in the interior enamel on arrival; another lost a chip of enamel using a wooden spoon and was told it was wear and tear. Others say food sticks. And the product page itself warns that constant dishwashing may dull the enamel, which one two-star reviewer found out after six months.

Suits you if

  • You cook slow, one-pot meals most weeks
  • You want a pot to keep for decades

Look elsewhere if

  • You struggle to lift heavy pans
  • You want everything to go in the dishwasher

Le Creuset’s stoneware is the cheapest way into the brand’s colours, and this rectangular dish is the most useful piece of it. It comes in 19cm, 26cm and 32cm lengths at £45, £55 and £69, has deep sides and scalloped handles that are easy to grip in oven gloves, and goes in the oven, freezer and dishwasher. It averages 4.8 stars from more than 200 reviews and carries a 10-year guarantee. It is made in Thailand, not France.

The lowest reviews have one theme: cracking. Several buyers say their dish cracked in the oven, one on its first use, and another says theirs broke within three weeks. The product page has a rule worth following: never put a frozen dish into a preheated oven, and do not preheat above 205°C for a dish at room temperature.

Suits you if

  • You want Le Creuset colour for under £70
  • You bake and roast more than you braise

Look elsewhere if

  • You cook straight from the freezer
3Best for one-pan dinners

Cast Iron Shallow Casserole

A wide, low cast iron pan with a lid, for browning and then simmering in one pot, and serving straight from it.

The shallow casserole is the most practical of the cast iron shapes. Its flat base is large for its capacity, so meat and onions brown rather than steam, and the low sides make it easier to stir a risotto or reduce a sauce than in the round pot. It comes in 26cm, 28cm and 30cm, holding 2.2, 2.8 and 3.5 litres, and averages 4.8 stars from more than 200 reviews.

The complaint in the lowest reviews is the familiar one for enamelled cast iron: food sticks, especially if you cook on a high heat. Le Creuset’s own advice is low to medium heat throughout. One reviewer marked it down for the price alone. Check the version with the Signature knob, which was listed from £259 when we checked, less than this one.

Suits you if

  • You cook for two to four people
  • You want a pan that goes from hob to table

Look elsewhere if

  • You cook on a high heat and hate soaking pans
4Best for Sunday roasts

Cast Iron Oval Casserole

The longer version of the round casserole, shaped for a whole chicken, a leg of lamb or an oval loaf.

A round pot is fine for stew, but a chicken or a shoulder of pork fits far better in an oval one. This is the same French cast iron as the round casserole, in sizes from 27cm (4.1 litres) up to 40cm (13.9 litres), though not every size was available in every colour when we checked. It averages 4.8 stars from more than 250 reviews. It is also the dearest pick here, from £325 for the smallest.

The lowest-rated reviews are about expectations and quality control. One buyer was disappointed that it is not non-stick; another received a lid with a visible chip. A four-star reviewer adds that the lid keeps in most moisture but not as much as a slow cooker, and that the metal screw on the lid is the one part that does not clean up like new.

Suits you if

  • You pot-roast whole birds or joints
  • You bake oval sourdough loaves

Look elsewhere if

  • Your oven or hob ring is small

Signature Stainless Steel Uncoated Shallow Frying Pan

Le Creuset’s non-stick pans attract the worst of its Trustpilot reviews, with coating failures and refused guarantee claims. This uncoated pan avoids the problem: it is stainless steel bonded to aluminium in three layers, made in Portugal, safe in the oven to 260°C and covered for the original owner’s lifetime. It comes in 20cm, 26cm, 28cm and 30cm, from £155 to £219 at full price; an October offer took up to 20% off until the 31st.

The weakness is the learning curve. The one-star review says everything stuck despite priming the pan with oil, and needed long soaks to clean. Happier owners say it took practice: heat it gently, add oil, and let food release before turning it. The page also warns not to pour salt directly onto the steel.

Suits you if

  • You want a frying pan with no coating to wear out
  • You like a proper crust on meat

Look elsewhere if

  • You want eggs to slide out with no effort

For a present that is recognisably Le Creuset without the cast iron price, the standard mug is the answer. It holds 350ml, has the same three-ring pattern as the casseroles, is dishwasher safe, and came in more than 30 colours when we checked. It averages 4.8 from more than 300 reviews and has the 10-year stoneware guarantee.

The one- and two-star reviews are mostly about breakage and feel. Several buyers received chipped mugs, one says a mug cracked after three or four uses, and one gift buyer was disappointed that four mugs came in a single brown carton rather than individual boxes. Others found the handle too small to hold properly or said tea cools quickly.

Suits you if

  • You want a small gift that matches their pans
  • You like to mix colours across a set

Look elsewhere if

  • You want each mug gift-boxed by the shop
  • You hold a mug with your whole hand

Where Le Creuset wins, and where rivals do

Le Creuset’s strengths are narrow but real. Its cast iron is made in France and carries a lifetime guarantee for the original owner, and owners in the reviews describe pots still in use after 30 or 40 years. Its colours run across pans, stoneware and mugs, so a kitchen can be built up piece by piece.

The weaker side is everything else. Stoneware is made in Thailand and has a 10-year guarantee, kettles five years, and the guarantee excludes wear and tear and overheating, which is where most refused claims on Trustpilot land. The brand rates 4.4 there, but its recent one-star reviews are dominated by non-stick coatings that failed and claims turned down. The delivery page also still carried a notice about delays from June 2021 when we read it.

Working out which one is yours

1Buy cast iron, think twice about non-stick

The highest-rated products on lecreuset.co.uk are the enamelled cast iron casseroles, at close to 4.8 stars each. The non-stick and enamelled frying pans score lower, and most of the recent one-star Trustpilot reviews we read were about a coating that wore out and a guarantee claim turned down as wear and tear or overheating. If you want a frying pan from the brand, uncoated stainless steel sidesteps that dispute entirely.

2Choose a casserole size by people, not looks

Each casserole page has a size table with capacity and the empty weight of each size, and it is worth reading before you choose a colour. A 24cm round pot holds 4.2 litres and weighs 4.36kg empty; the 28cm weighs 6.18kg before you add food. Match the base to your largest hob ring too, as the care notes warn an induction hob may not recognise a pan on the wrong-sized ring.

3Read the knob and handle notes

Casserole bodies and lids with stainless steel or phenolic knobs can go in the dishwasher, but lids with gold, copper, iridescent or black nickel knobs should be washed by hand, and the brand warns that constant dishwashing dulls the enamel. The same casserole is often sold in a Signature knob version at a different price, so compare both listings before buying.

What we'd skip

Cast Iron Round Skillet

Le Creuset’s enamelled cast iron frying pan averages about four stars, well below the casseroles, and 20 of its 120 reviews are one-star. The complaint is nearly always sticking: buyers expected the casserole’s easy release and found eggs and halloumi welded on. Others say the handle gets too hot to hold. The stainless steel pan above is the better frying pan.

Traditional Kettle

The whistling stovetop kettle averages under 3.5 stars, the lowest of anything we checked here. Recent one-star reviews describe enamel flaking or crumbling inside within months, and rust. On Trustpilot, one owner of a Le Creuset kettle says a rust claim was refused as thermal shock, which the brand does not treat as a fault. The guarantee is five years, not lifetime.

Questions people ask

Does the Le Creuset lifetime guarantee cover chipped enamel?

Only if Le Creuset agrees it is a manufacturing fault. The guarantee covers faulty workmanship or materials in normal domestic use following the care instructions, and excludes wear and tear, misuse and commercial use. Reviewers whose enamel chipped in use say their claims were turned down as wear and tear. A defect found on delivery is different: report it straight away under your 30-day right to return.

Can Le Creuset cast iron go in the dishwasher?

The product pages say casserole bodies with cast iron or phenolic handles are dishwasher-safe, as are lids with stainless steel or phenolic knobs. They also say constant dishwashing may dull the enamel, and lids with gold, copper, iridescent or black nickel knobs should be washed by hand. A soak in warm soapy water for 15 to 20 minutes is the brand’s advice for stuck food.

Who pays for returns to Le Creuset?

You do, if you change your mind. The UK delivery and returns page says you have 30 days from delivery of the last item to withdraw, that you must bear the direct cost of returning the goods, and that the refund, including standard delivery, follows within 14 days of the goods arriving back. Faulty items are handled separately through the helpline.
