Huel sells nutritionally complete food for people who would otherwise skip lunch or buy it badly: powders you shake with water, ready-made bottles, bars and a protein powder. Everything is vegan, and almost everything carries all 26 of the vitamins and minerals Huel lists on its UK pages.

This guide picks seven products from the current UK range, with one-off prices read on uk.huel.com in October 2026. The headline advice: buy Black Edition if you can, make your first order a one-off under £70 so the money-back guarantee covers it, and only then subscribe. None of this is dietary advice; if you have a medical condition, ask a professional before replacing meals.

Why each one made the list

1Best overall

Black Edition

Huel’s best-selling powder: 40g of protein in a 400kcal meal, sweetened with coconut sugar and stevia rather than sucralose, and certified gluten-free.

Black Edition is the powder to start with. Two scoops (90g) in 500ml of cold water make a 400kcal meal with 40g of protein and at least 8g of fibre. Huel’s help centre says it is sweetened only with organic coconut sugar and stevia, and that it is made gluten-free, which the original Powder is not. A bag holds 17 meals in ten flavours, two of which (Coffee Caramel and Matcha Latte) contain caffeine.

Texture is the complaint. One October two-star reviewer called it gritty and ‘pretty much undrinkable’, and grainy or chalky shakes come up repeatedly in the low-rated reviews across Huel’s powders. A blender helps. The page also warned of a two to three working day delay on orders containing the Selection Box of single-serve packs when we looked.

Suits you if

  • You want the most protein per meal in the powder range
  • You avoid sucralose or need a gluten-free shake

Look elsewhere if

  • You cannot stand a slightly gritty shake
2Best value

Essential

Huel’s budget powder: 22.5 meals a bag, 20g of protein each, in chocolate or vanilla only, for a little over a pound a meal.

Essential is the cheapest way to eat Huel. Huel says it has the most affordable price per 400-calorie meal of any Huel, with 20g of protein and the full 26 vitamins and minerals; a bag stretches to 22.5 meals. On subscription the price falls to £24, which the hero line calls £1.07 a meal while the feature box further down says £1.09. Either way it undercuts the original Powder.

The savings show up in the glass. There are only two flavours, half the protein of Black Edition, and its low-rated reviews are mostly about taste: a taste one reviewer likened to cereal milk left out overnight, a gritty chocolate, and one reviewer who had tried both and said the standard Powder was ‘miles ahead’ in enjoyability.

Suits you if

  • Price per meal matters more than protein
  • You will drink it with milk or blend in fruit

Look elsewhere if

  • You want plenty of flavours to rotate
  • You are buying Huel for protein
3Best for flexible portions

Powder

The original oat-based Huel: 30g of protein in two scoops, or a 200kcal light meal from one, in ten flavours including unflavoured.

The original Powder (v3.1 in Huel’s help centre) is built on oats and pea protein. Two scoops, 100g, make a 400kcal meal with 30g of protein, and Huel suggests a single scoop as a 200kcal light meal, which makes it the most adjustable powder in the range. It comes in ten flavours, from Mint Chocolate to Unflavoured & Unsweetened, and a bag holds 17 meals.

Two cautions from Huel’s own help pages. Because of the oats it is not gluten-free; there is a separate certified Gluten-Free version for coeliacs. And some flavours are sweetened with sucralose, unlike Black Edition. Low-rated reviews mention a powdery, grainy texture, and one reviewer found a bag of Berry had ‘absolutely zero flavour’.

Suits you if

  • You want to vary portions between 200 and 400kcal
  • You like an oaty, porridge-like shake

Look elsewhere if

  • You are coeliac; buy the Gluten-Free version
  • You avoid artificial sweeteners
4Best for no-prep lunches

Black Edition Ready-to-drink

Black Edition in a 400kcal bottle with 35g of protein: nothing to measure or wash up, at roughly twice the price per meal of the powder.

The bottled Black Edition is the most convenient thing Huel sells. Each bottle is a 400kcal meal with 35g of protein and the usual 26 vitamins and minerals, sweetened with stevia and coconut sugar according to Huel’s help centre. Boxes hold 12 bottles in one of eight flavours, or a mixed Selection Box, and Iced Latte contains caffeine.

Convenience costs. A one-off box works out at £3.80 a bottle against £1.99 a meal for the powder, and Huel’s delivery page warns that ready-to-drink orders may be split into parcels that arrive on different days. Taste divides people: an October three-star reviewer of the Selection Box found each flavour tried left an aftertaste. Buy a Selection Box before committing to 12 of one flavour.

Suits you if

  • You will not make a shake at work
  • You want 35g of protein with no preparation

Look elsewhere if

  • You drink one every day and watch the cost
5Best for lighter days

Lite Ready-to-drink

A thinner, 190kcal bottle with 25g of protein and 6g of fibre, sold as a meal but closer to a large snack.

Lite is Huel’s answer to people who find the main bottles too heavy. Each bottle has 190 calories, 25g of protein, 6g of fibre and 2g of sugar, with no artificial colours, flavours or sweeteners; the help centre says it is sweetened with stevia and coconut sugar. Flavours include Mango and Vanilla Matcha, the latter with caffeine.

At 190kcal it is a light lunch at best, and Huel’s own page calls it ‘lighter calories’. The low-rated reviews are about taste and body: one September two-star reviewer called it watery, ‘more like flavoured water than a proper meal replacement’, and another found the strawberry unpleasant, with a slightly oily texture. If you liked the thick original bottles, this is a different drink.

Suits you if

  • You want a thin, drinkable shake rather than a thick one
  • You want protein without many calories

Look elsewhere if

  • You need it to keep you full until dinner
6Best for snacking

Complete Nutrition Bar

A chewy bar with up to 15g of protein and the 26 vitamins and minerals, in five flavours, though it contains wheat and one flavour peanuts.

The bar is the easiest Huel to carry around. Huel says each has up to 15g of protein and around 210kcal depending on flavour, with fibre and the 26 vitamins and minerals, in flavours such as Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Dark Chocolate & Raspberry. A box holds 12 bars, or 15 in the Selection Box.

Check the allergens. Huel’s help centre says every bar contains gluten from wheat, so coeliacs should look elsewhere, and the Selection Box description warns that it contains peanuts. The low-rated reviews mention bars arriving melted or smashed in warm weather, and texture complaints: one reviewer who had a replacement box said the bars tasted like wax.

Suits you if

  • You want a snack that is not a chocolate bar
  • You need something that survives a bag all day

Look elsewhere if

  • You are coeliac or allergic to peanuts
7Best for protein top-ups

Complete Protein

A plant protein powder with 20g of protein a scoop plus the vitamins and minerals, best understood as a supplement rather than a meal.

Complete Protein is Huel’s protein powder: one 29g scoop in 300ml of water gives 20g of plant protein, all the essential amino acids and the 26 vitamins and minerals. A bag holds 26 servings, the cheapest per serving of anything here, in six flavours, and every variant is tagged gluten-free.

It is not a meal, and one October two-star reviewer felt ‘conned’ after assuming it was a cheaper, lower-calorie Black Edition; the bag was smaller and the shake far less filling. Read the page carefully before swapping. Huel’s help centre also confirms that most flavours contain sucralose, so if you chose Black Edition to avoid artificial sweeteners, this one does not follow suit.

Suits you if

  • You want plant protein after training
  • You already eat proper meals and want more protein

Look elsewhere if

  • You want a meal replacement
  • You avoid sucralose

Before you buy: how to pick

1Decide between a meal and a top-up

Black Edition, Essential, Powder and the 400kcal bottles are meals. Lite is a light 190kcal shake, the bar is a snack, and Complete Protein is a protein supplement, not a meal, despite the shared vitamins. Huel’s product names do not make this obvious, and at least one recent reviewer bought Complete Protein expecting a cheaper Black Edition. Check the calories per serving before you check the price.

2Read the sweetener and gluten answers

Huel’s help centre is clearer than its product pages. Black Edition and both Black Edition and Lite bottles are sweetened with stevia and coconut sugar; some Powder flavours and most Complete Protein flavours use sucralose. Black Edition and Complete Protein are gluten-free; the standard Powder contains oats and the bars contain wheat. If either matters to you, search the help centre for the product by name before ordering.

3Use the guarantee on your first order

The ‘30-day money back guarantee’ is narrower than the banner. It covers your first-ever Huel order only, delivered to a UK address, and only if the order total is £70 or less; anything above counts as a bulk purchase. You must contact Huel within 30 days of delivery, pay the return postage, and £10 is deducted from the refund. Order a small mixed basket first.

4Treat the subscription as a commitment

Subscriptions save 10% and earn double Huel+ points, but payment is taken at renewal, usually between 2am and 5am, before the order is packed. Huel’s help centre says emailing support does not cancel a subscription; you must complete the steps in your account before the next renewal is charged. Recent one-star reviews describe months of unwanted orders, so cancel early and keep the confirmation.

Why buy from Huel?

Huel’s strength is range and labelling. Few rivals sell a complete-meal powder, bottles, bars and a protein powder under one roof, all vegan, with the sweetener and gluten status of each product spelled out in a help centre that answers almost anything. Subscribers save 10% and can change flavours, frequency or cancel without fees.

The weaknesses are service and texture. Huel’s Trustpilot score was 4.2 from about 29,900 reviews when we read it, with roughly one in sixteen at one star, a mix of UK, US and EU customers. The complaints cluster around subscriptions that kept charging, AI-led support that is hard to escape, damaged parcels and late Hived deliveries. Supermarket bottles from rivals such as Yfood win on convenience; plain protein powders from specialists such as Myprotein win if you only want protein.

What we'd leave on the shelf

Daily Greens

A greens, superfruit and adaptogen powder claiming 91 vitamins, minerals and nutrients, at £50 for 30 servings one-off. At 23kcal a serving it is a supplement, not food, and costs more per serving than a meal of Black Edition on subscription. If the aim is more vegetables, buy vegetables.

Your questions, answered

Is every Huel product gluten-free?

Some of it. Huel’s UK help centre says Black Edition powder is gluten-free and Complete Protein variants are tagged gluten-free on the product page. The standard Powder is not, because of its oats, though a certified Gluten-Free version is sold separately, and every Complete Nutrition Bar contains wheat. Check the help article for the exact product, and if you are coeliac, take your own medical advice too.

Can I return Huel if I do not like the taste?

Only in limited cases. Ordinary returns must be unopened, so a flavour you dislike after one shake does not qualify. The money-back guarantee covers a first-ever order of £70 or less within 30 days of delivery, minus £10, with return postage on you. A recent one-star reviewer who bought a sample box later on could not return it. Start with a Selection Box or small bag.

Which Huel has the most protein?

Black Edition powder, at 40g in a 400kcal meal, followed by the Black Edition bottle at 35g. The original Powder has 30g, Lite has 25g in 190kcal, and Essential and Complete Protein have 20g a serving. Bars have up to 15g. If protein is the reason you are buying, Black Edition is the best value for it per meal.

How do I cancel a Huel subscription?

Log in at uk.huel.com, go to My Subscriptions, choose the subscription and click Cancel Subscription, before your next renewal is charged. Huel’s help centre is explicit that emailing support does not cancel it. If the next order has already been charged or packed, self-cancelling will not stop it, and you will need to contact the support team.

Rivals worth a look

  • Yfood sells ready-to-drink meal shakes in supermarkets, so you can buy one bottle rather than a box of 12.
  • Myprotein is the obvious specialist for plain protein powders if you do not need a complete meal.
