Emma Bridgewater’s sponged and spotted earthenware is made in Stoke-on-Trent, and its mugs are a familiar British present. Most of what it sells is decorated by hand, which is both the appeal and the catch: no two pieces match exactly, and the lowest reviews return again and again to colour, glaze and lettering.

This guide picks six pieces across mugs, tableware and the enamel cookware. When we checked in October, the best-selling Polka Dot 1/2 Pint Mug and the Polka Dot teapot were both out of stock, so the picks below are things you could actually order. Product reviews come from the Trustpilot widget on each product page, read lowest first.

Why each one made the list

1Best overall

Blue Star 1/2 Pint Mug

The classic half-pint shape in English earthenware, with the calm blue star pattern that sits well with almost anything.

The half-pint mug is the shape Emma Bridgewater is built on: 300ml, 9.3cm tall, made in the UK from English earthenware and dishwasher safe. Of the patterns in stock in October, Blue Star is the one we would buy first. It is quieter than Polka Dot, easy to mix with other ranges, and there are matching plates, bowls and a teapot. Buying two half-pint mugs saved 15% when we checked.

The lowest-rated reviews are about colour. Several owners say newer mugs are a paler blue than their older ones, and one bought a replacement that did not match the other five in her set. Others received a mug broken in transit. Like all the brand’s earthenware, it is not recommended for the microwave.

Good for you if

  • You want a mug that suits any kitchen
  • You are starting a set and will buy it together

Not for you if

  • You need it to match older Blue Star pieces exactly
  • You heat drinks in the microwave

Polka Dot Large Dinner Plate, 10.5 Inch - Set of 4

Four hand-sponged dinner plates at a 20% multibuy saving on buying them singly, the cheapest way to fill a table with Polka Dot.

Single Polka Dot dinner plates cost £28 each, and this set of four was listed at £89.60 against an RRP of £112 when we checked, the same 20% saving offered on the brand’s other plate and bowl sets. Each plate is 27cm across and 3.2cm deep, with a sponged border of coloured dots, and goes in the dishwasher.

Because the dots are applied by hand, they vary, and that is the theme of the worst reviews. Long-time buyers complain the dots on newer plates are smaller than on their older ones, and one found a plate in her set much paler than the rest. Others report crazing across the glaze, faulty glaze on arrival, and one warns against microwaving them by mistake.

Good for you if

  • You want a full set of everyday plates
  • You like a table that does not match perfectly

Not for you if

  • You are adding to plates bought years ago
3Best for pasta nights

Polka Dot Medium Pasta Bowl

A wide, shallow 575ml bowl that works as well for a stew or a salad as it does for spaghetti.

The medium pasta bowl is the most useful single piece in the Polka Dot range. It is 23.4cm across and 4.9cm deep, holds 575ml, and is wide enough for a proper plate of spaghetti or a main-course salad. Some owners use it as a serving bowl instead. A set of four was £89.60 when we checked, against £28 each.

It has the weakest recent reviews of our picks: 4.2 stars from 30 reviews on the product page, five of them one-star. The complaints are about quality control rather than design: a bowl arriving broken, a blemish on the rim, “big lumps in clay” in pieces sold as firsts, and one buyer whose plates and bowls keep cracking. Inspect a delivery as soon as it arrives.

Good for you if

  • You want one bowl for most meals
  • You already own Polka Dot plates

Not for you if

  • You will be upset by small finish flaws

Polka Dot ‘Mr & Mrs’ Set of 2 1/2 Pint Mugs Boxed

Emma Bridgewater’s single mugs do not come gift-boxed (the site sells gift bags separately), and a recurring complaint in older reviews is that a mug arrives looking too plain to give as a present. This set solves that. It is two Polka Dot half-pint mugs, one lettered Mr and one Mrs, sold boxed; there are also Mr & Mr and Mrs & Mrs versions at the same price.

The lettering is the weakness. Recent one-star reviews describe words that do not sit level and lettering that came out faint and faded, which one buyer said made the set impossible to give as the wedding present she bought it for. Open the box well before the wedding, while you still have time to send it back.

Good for you if

  • You want a ready-boxed wedding present
  • The couple already like Polka Dot

Not for you if

  • You are ordering in the last week before the wedding

With the plain Polka Dot half-pint mug out of stock when we checked, the personalised version was the way to get one. The price includes six letters, then £1 per letter. You choose text for either side of the handle (up to 27 characters each, including spaces) and the base (up to 16), or the pattern alone at no extra charge. Everything is painted by hand, exactly as typed, capitals included.

The trade-off is the rules. Personalised orders are final: the FAQ says there are no refunds or replacements for them, so a typo is your problem. They take up to two weeks, cannot go next day, and arrive separately from the rest of an order. Reviews of the brand’s lettered mugs also complain of words that do not sit level.

Good for you if

  • You are ordering at least two weeks ahead
  • You want a present nobody else will give

Not for you if

  • You may need to return it
6Best for roasting

Polka Dot Enamel Roasting Dish 34cm

None of Emma Bridgewater’s earthenware is oven safe unless it is marked as cookware, so if you want the pattern in the oven, this is the piece. It is enamel on steel, 34cm by 21cm and 5.8cm deep, oven safe to 250°C, and can also go on gas, electric and induction hobs, in the freezer and in the dishwasher. Note that it is made in Serbia, not Stoke.

The reviews are strong, but the low ones are about chipped enamel on arrival. One buyer’s tins came with rough corners showing the metal underneath; an older review describes two tins packed without protection that arrived stuck together. Another reviewer found it small and overpriced, so measure against your usual roasting tin.

Good for you if

  • You want an oven-to-table dish in the pattern
  • You cook on induction

Not for you if

  • You need to roast a large turkey

Emma Bridgewater against the rest

Emma Bridgewater’s case is pattern and provenance. The pottery is made in the UK from English earthenware and decorated by hand in Stoke-on-Trent, the ranges stay on sale for years, so you can add to a set, and the brand describes itself as a B Corp. It also has a two-year guarantee and promises to aim to replace crazed pieces under five years old.

Against it: the prices are high for earthenware that cannot go in the oven or microwave, and the hand finish means variation you have to accept. Its Trustpilot score was 4.5 from around 85,000 reviews when we checked, but recent one-star reviews mention late or lost Evri parcels, items cancelled after ordering and generic replies from customer service.

Before you buy: how to pick

1Know what a second is before you buy one

The Outlet sells seconds alongside discontinued pieces. The FAQ says a second has a fault in the finish, decoration or shape, but nothing structural, so it still works as intended; the fault is marked with a black or red pen that washes off. Seconds are a sensible way to buy everyday mugs and bowls. For a present, pay for a first, and check it on arrival, since reviewers report flaws in those too.

2Earthenware is not oven or microwave pottery

Every pottery page we read carries the same care note: dishwasher safe with a liquid detergent, not recommended for the microwave because earthenware can get hot, and not oven safe unless marked as cookware. If you want the pattern in the oven, choose the enamel range, which is made in Serbia and rated to 250°C. Use mugs and plates for serving only.

3Buy a set in one order

Because each piece is sponged and painted by hand, colour and spot size vary, and the lowest product reviews are full of buyers whose new pieces do not match older ones. If matching matters, buy the whole set at once. The multibuy sets of four plates or bowls save 20%, and two half-pint mugs bought together saved 15% when we checked.

Questions people ask

Can Emma Bridgewater mugs go in the microwave?

The brand says no. Every pottery product page we read says the earthenware is dishwasher safe but not recommended for use in the microwave, because it can get hot, and not oven safe unless marked as cookware. One plate reviewer gave a one-star rating with a single line of advice: do not put it in the microwave by mistake.

What should I do if my Emma Bridgewater pottery has crazed?

Contact customer services. The FAQ says that if the piece is less than five years old, they will aim to replace it free of charge with a similar product, or one of equal value if it is discontinued, and may ask you to send it back to investigate. Pieces bought from other shops have to go back to the shop where they were bought, which one recent Trustpilot reviewer found out with a John Lewis plate.

Can I return a personalised Emma Bridgewater mug?

Not if you simply change your mind or made a mistake in the text. The FAQ says all personalised orders are final once placed, with no refunds or replacements, and that the lettering is painted exactly as typed, capitals included. A piece arriving faulty or damaged is a different matter: report it within 30 days of delivery.
