Elemis is a British spa skincare brand sold at department-store prices, and it suits people who like a rich texture, a strong spa scent and a ritual at the basin. Its cleansing balm is one of the most reviewed beauty products in the country.

This guide picks five products from the UK site and reads each one’s small print: the claims footnotes, the ingredient lists and the lowest-rated UK reviews. The headline advice is to start with the travel sizes. Elemis will only refund products that are unopened with their seals intact, so a full jar you do not get on with is yours to keep. And never pay full price without checking the gift threshold first.

1Best overall

Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm

The balm that melts to an oil and then a milk, sold in four jar sizes and rated by almost seven thousand customers on the Elemis site.

This is the reason most people buy Elemis. It is a firm balm of sweet almond, elderberry, oat kernel and starflower oils that turns into an oil on dry skin and a milk when you add water. Elemis says it took 45 formulations, calls it the UK’s number one prestige facial cleanser on the strength of named Circana sales data, and says a 2025 trial of 34 people found it removed waterproof make-up. Those are the brand’s claims.

The low-rated UK reviews are few for a product this popular, and mostly about smell: several people found the lavender-led blend of nine essential oils stale or overpowering. A couple of loyal buyers thought a recent tub had changed texture or scent. And the muslin cloth that used to come in the box was dropped in October 2023 while the price stayed put, which still irritates people.

Pick it if

  • You wear long-lasting or waterproof make-up
  • You enjoy a scented, slow cleanse

Pass if

  • You dislike lavender and eucalyptus
  • You need a vegan cleanser; it contains beeswax

Superfood Facial Wash

A green gel cleanser with pumpkin seed, chia seed and broccoli seed oils, sold in a 30ml travel size that costs less than a cinema ticket.

The Superfood range is Elemis’s cheaper way in, and the facial wash is the cheapest of the lot: £7.50 for 30ml or £35 for 200ml. It is a lathering gel with pumpkin seed, chia seed and avocado oils listed among the ingredients, and the page recommends it morning and evening. The claims come from a 2017 user trial of 120 people, and the page prints two different percentages, 98% and 96%, for the same “looking refreshed” claim.

The weakness is consistent in the UK one- and two-star reviews: several found it drying or stinging, more like a foaming hand wash than a treat, and a couple disliked the scent, one comparing it to cheap aftershave. Its main cleansing agent is sodium lauroyl sarcosinate, a foaming surfactant, and fragrance is on the list.

Pick it if

  • You want to try Elemis without a big outlay
  • You prefer a foaming gel to a balm

Pass if

  • Your skin feels tight after foaming cleansers
3Best for beginners

Superfood Midnight Facial

A prebiotic sleeping cream for dry skin, in a 15ml or 50ml jar, at about half the price of the Pro-Collagen creams.

Elemis describes the Midnight Facial as a prebiotic sleeping cream for dry, thirsty skin, with camu camu, cocoa butter and banana flower extract on the front of the page and sweet almond oil and shea butter in the list. Its percentages, such as 92% agreeing it gave an intense boost of hydration, come from a 2020 user trial of 59 people over two weeks: that is what people said, not a measurement.

The recurring UK complaint is not about the cream at all. A run of one-star reviews from 2024 to 2026 describe jars arriving a third to half empty, and one says customer care put it down to transit. Others found the scent sweet, like bubblegum, and too strong. Check the jar as soon as it arrives, because problems must be reported within 14 days.

Pick it if

  • You want a richer cream for the evening
  • You would rather start at under £20

Pass if

  • You prefer unscented skincare

Pro-Collagen Marine Cream SPF 30

If you are going to buy the famous Marine Cream, buy this version. It is the same algae-led day cream, with padina pavonica, chlorella and a red microalga named on the page, plus SPF 30 and a PA+++ UVA rating. Elemis says it is clinically proven to reduce the look of fine lines in 14 days, citing a 2021 trial of 37 people. Read the footnotes closely: the third claim, that 93% agreed it firmed the skin, is labelled a clinical trial of 120 people, while the plain Marine Cream page calls the matching survey a user trial.

The UK complaints: the 15ml jar costs £39 and some buyers found it no bigger than a magazine sample, one found it turned lumpy in a hot country, and a handful reported reactions. It contains fragrance and wheat germ oil.

Pick it if

  • You want moisturiser and SPF in one step
  • You like a light, scented day cream

Pass if

  • You are sensitive to fragrance
  • You want a high-factor sunscreen for holidays

Dynamic Resurfacing Facial Pads

Pre-soaked, two-sided exfoliating pads with lactic acid and enzymes, sold in a 14-pad trial pack or a jar of 60.

These are dual-sided pads soaked in a lotion that lists lactic acid, papain and other enzymes: you sweep the textured side over the face, then the smooth side. The page says to use one morning and evening and to keep away from the eyes. Elemis cites a 2019 clinical trial of 36 people for its cell-turnover claim and a 2017 user trial for the 100% satisfaction lines.

They are very well rated overall, but the UK low reviews are specific. Several buyers with otherwise calm skin say the pads brought them out in spots or left them red and sore within days, and a few saw no difference at all. One found the pads small and dry. The 14-pack at £16 is the sensible way to find out, since an opened jar cannot be returned. Acid exfoliants do not suit every skin.

Pick it if

  • You want a quick exfoliating step
  • You will start with the 14-pad pack

Pass if

  • Your skin reacts easily to acids
  • You want visible results to justify £50

Elemis against the rest

Elemis’s case is the cleansing balm, plus a habit most rivals lack: every claim on a product page carries a footnote with the year, the type of study and the number of people. The numbers are small (34, 37, 59), but they are printed. Its customer care also answers. Its Trustpilot rating was “Excellent” when we read it, and the company replies to the negative reviews.

Rivals win on price and on flexibility. Liz Earle’s Cleanse & Polish is the usual cheaper British alternative; Clarins and Clinique are easier to try at a counter; The Body Shop’s camomile cleansing butter is a budget stand-in. The weak points are the returns policy, which refuses anything opened, and the promotions machinery: gift values that move between offers, discount codes that cancel the free gift, and loyalty rewards that now go mainly to subscribers.

Choosing the right one

1Buy travel sizes before full jars

Elemis sells most of its bestsellers in a travel size: a 20g cleansing balm for £15, a 30ml Superfood wash for £7.50, a 15ml Midnight Facial for £19 and a 14-pad pack of the resurfacing pads for £16. Because the returns policy only covers unopened products with seals intact, the small size is your only real trial. Scent is the most common complaint in the UK reviews, and you cannot judge that from a screen.

2Read the asterisks, not the headline

Each claim on an Elemis page has a footnote. “Clinically proven” generally means a small trial (34 to 38 people over four weeks for the balm and Marine Cream), while “agreed” percentages come from user trials, which record what people said. They are not the same kind of evidence. A few footnotes do not line up neatly with the claims above them, so treat the numbers as marketing with a source, and judge the product on texture and the reviews.

3Time your order around the gifts

When we checked in October 2026 the UK site offered a six-piece gift said to be worth £70 at £120 and a gift worth £97 at £145, excluding the advent calendar. “Worth” means what the contents would cost at full price, not what you save, and one Trustpilot reviewer saw the same gift valued differently in two offers. Using a discount code can also rule you out of the gift. Decide what you need, then see if a threshold is near.

4Subscribe only to what you finish

Subscription by Elemis gives 10% off every order, 15% off the third and sixth, a gift with the first and free standard delivery. You can change, skip or cancel up to 24 hours before shipment, and a reminder arrives about ten days ahead. It makes sense for a cleanser you repurchase on a rhythm. It needs a card, not PayPal or Klarna, and the price charged is whatever applies when it ships.

What we'd skip

Pro-Collagen Marine Cream

The original flagship, at £100 for 50ml, is the same cream as the SPF 30 version above without the sun protection, at the same price. Some UK reviewers who came back to it after years found it pilled on the skin, and a few reported reactions; it contains fragrance. For a day cream, the SPF version does more for the same money.

Questions people ask

Can I return Elemis skincare if I do not like it?

Not once it is opened. Elemis refunds within 30 days of delivery only if items are unused, unopened and sealed in their original packaging, and its help centre says that if you want to try before buying, you should visit an Elemis store, spa or salon. Products bought online have to go back by post, at your cost unless they were faulty or wrong. Start with the travel sizes.

Is the Pro-Collagen range actually collagen in a jar?

The name refers to Elemis’s claim about skin, not to the formula being mostly collagen. The ingredient list for Pro-Collagen Marine Cream starts with water, glycerin and familiar emollients, with the algae extracts further down. That is normal for a moisturiser. Judge it as a cream you like using, and read the claims as the brand’s, backed by trials of a few dozen people.

Is the Elemis cleansing balm suitable for sensitive skin?

That depends on the person, and we cannot advise on individual skin. What the page does tell you is that the balm contains a blend of nine essential oils including lavender, eucalyptus and geranium, plus wheat germ oil and beeswax. If any of those are a problem for you, look elsewhere; if you are unsure, a 20g jar is the cheap way to find out, and a pharmacist can advise.

Other brands to consider

  • Liz Earle makes the obvious British alternative to the balm in Cleanse & Polish, a hot-cloth cleanser at a lower price point.
  • Clarins covers similar spa-skincare ground with more counters to try products at before you commit.
