Liberty is a department store, but the reason to shop there is the part it makes itself: prints from an archive it puts at 50,000 designs, printed on Tana Lawn cotton at its own mill in northern Italy. This guide sticks to that part of the shop.

It picks six things, from a £24 bundle of fabric pieces to a duvet set. The headline advice: much of the range was 20% off when we checked, so never assume a full price is the real one; read the care line, because several of these are dry clean only; and buy online, where returns are free for 30 days, rather than in the store, where the window is 14.

Betsy Tana Lawn Cotton Double Duvet Cover Set

Liberty’s best-known small floral on a percale-woven Tana Lawn duvet cover with two pillowcases, made in Italy and reduced from £295 when we checked.

Betsy is the print people picture when they think of Liberty, and the duvet set puts it where you will see it every day. The double is a 200 by 200cm cover with two standard 50 by 75cm pillowcases, in 100% Tana Lawn cotton percale with contrast piping and Liberty-branded buttons. It was designed in Liberty’s studio, printed at its mill in Italy and made there, and it washes at 40°C with a low tumble dry.

The weaknesses are price and evidence. Even at the reduced £236 it costs several times a high-street set, and its page had no customer reviews when we checked, so there is no owner feedback on how the lawn wears. Tana Lawn is a fine, light cotton, so expect a cool, soft bed rather than a crisp, heavy one.

Pick it if

  • You want a Liberty print you will use every day
  • You prefer light, cool bedding to heavy cotton

Pass if

  • You want owner reviews before spending this much
2Best for dressmakers

Anna’s Haven Tana Lawn Cotton

A new watercolour garden print, drawn from a 1971 Liberty scarf, on the cotton Liberty is famous for, sold by the metre.

Tana Lawn is the reason Liberty matters, and the product pages give dressmakers what they need: 100% cotton, 1.36m wide on the roll with 1.33m usable, 76g per square metre, wash at 40°C and line dry. Anna’s Haven is part of the autumn/winter 2026 collection, a dense garden of roses, foxgloves, hollyhocks and poppies in the manner of Dame Elizabeth Blackadder, based on a Liberty scarf design from 1971.

It was £25.60 a metre when we checked, reduced from £32, and a dress takes several metres. The bigger risk is the colour, which you are judging on a screen. In the store, cut lengths of fabric cannot be returned at all, and online terms exclude anything made to your order, so order a small length first if you are unsure.

Pick it if

  • You sew and want the real Tana Lawn
  • You like a busy, painterly floral

Pass if

  • You are making your first garment from a pattern

Pink Tana Lawn Cotton Fabric Bundle One Metre

For quilters and anyone making small things (scrunchies, bunting, a cushion front), a bundle beats a single metre. This one is five pieces of Tana Lawn, each roughly 136cm by 40cm, in a pink colourway of assorted prints from the archive, printed at the Liberty mill in Italy. It was £23.96 when we checked, reduced from £29.95, which makes it less per piece than any single print by the metre.

The catch is in the word assorted. You do not choose the prints, so the bundle you receive may not match the photograph, and the pieces are too narrow for most garments. Its product page had no reviews to go on. Buy it for patchwork, not for a particular pattern you have fallen for.

Pick it if

  • You quilt or make small accessories
  • You want a gift for someone who sews

Pass if

  • You want a specific print
  • You need enough fabric for clothes

Strawberry Thief is a William Morris design of 1883 that Liberty has sold since 1979, and on velvet the colours are deep and rich. The cushion is 45cm square with a removable cover on an invisible zip and a 100% duck-feather pad, and it was printed in Italy. When we checked it was £115.50, down from £165.

Read the label before it goes near a family sofa. The cover is 49% cotton, 46% viscose and 5% polyester, and the care line says delicate dry clean only: do not wash, do not tumble dry. A spilt drink or a muddy dog means a trip to the cleaner, and viscose velvet can mark. There were no customer reviews on the page to say how it wears.

Pick it if

  • You want one bold Liberty piece in a living room
  • Your sofa is not a family battleground

  • You need covers you can machine wash

This is the Liberty present that gets used. The box is covered in cotton printed with Lodden, an archive design, and measures 18 by 25cm and 13cm deep, with sections for thread, scissors and the rest. It was £47.96 when we checked, reduced from £59.95. All six reviews on its page gave five stars, praising the size, the light weight and the handle.

The one complaint came from the most detailed of those reviews: an owner whose earlier box had a flimsy plastic interior, which she says has since improved, and who wished the trays were sold separately. The outer is spot clean only, so keep it away from tea. Liberty also sells matching pin cushions, scissors and tape measures, which one reviewer suggests putting inside as a gift.

  • You want a Liberty gift that will be used
  • The recipient does embroidery or mending

Stationery is the easiest way to give someone a Liberty print, and the cotton-bound notebooks are the nicest of it. This one is a 144-page A5 hardback (21 by 15.5cm) with a printed ribbon bookmark and a gold-tone stamped logo, covered in Tana Lawn printed with Painted Travels, which Liberty’s studio drew from the Victorian botanical painter Marianne North. It was £25.56 when we checked, reduced from £31.95.

Check the pages before you buy: this version is blank, and there is a separate lined version under its own listing. A fabric cover also shows marks that a laminated one would shrug off, and there were no reviews on the page. It is a lot for a notebook, but a present rather than a purchase.

  • You want a Liberty gift under £30
  • The recipient sketches or keeps a journal

  • You want lined pages; buy the lined version

Why buy from Liberty London?

Nobody else can sell you these prints. Liberty designs them in its own studio, prints Tana Lawn at its own mill near Lake Como and documents the fabric properly, down to usable width and grams per square metre. For dressmakers and for bedding in a recognisable print, there is no real substitute.

Everything else is weaker. Much of the site is other brands, from Le Creuset to Astier de Villatte, sold at the same price you would pay elsewhere. Liberty’s Trustpilot rating was excellent when we checked, but its one- and two-star reviews describe wrong items sent, parcels marked delivered that never came, and a WhatsApp service that reviewers say goes quiet. Morris & Co. sells William Morris patterns directly, and John Lewis is cheaper for plain bedding, with simpler returns.

How to choose

1Never pay the first price

When we checked in October 2026, Liberty’s Autumn Reset was taking up to 20% off home and fabrics, which is why most prices in this guide end in odd pence. New customers are also offered 15% off a first order for signing up to emails. Sales come round often, and the full prices here (£295 for the Betsy set, £32 a metre for Anna’s Haven) are the ones to compare against. Unless you need it for a date, wait.

2Read the care label first

Liberty prints sit on very different bases. Tana Lawn bedding washes at 40°C and can go in a low tumble dryer. The velvet cushions are cotton and viscose and say delicate dry clean only. The sewing box is spot clean only. The care and composition lines are in the Details and Composition & Care sections of each page, and they matter more than the print when you are choosing for a busy household.

3Buy fabric online, not in the store

Online purchases have 30 days from receipt, with a free DPD collection. Store purchases have 14 days, and the in-store list of items that cannot be returned at all includes cut lengths of fabric, duvets and pillows and Christmas decorations. Online, anything made to order is excluded. Order a short length of a print you are unsure of before committing to the four metres a dress might need.

Questions people ask

What is Tana Lawn and why does it cost so much?

It is Liberty’s own fine cotton, woven densely so it feels almost silky, and printed at the Liberty Printing Mill between Milan and Lake Como. The pages list it at 76g per square metre and 1.36m wide. You are paying for that cloth, for a print you cannot buy anywhere else and for a name. During sales it was about £26 a metre when we checked; full price is higher.

Can I return Liberty fabric?

Bought in the store, no: cut lengths of fabric are on the non-refundable list. Online, the terms give 30 days for unused items in original condition but exclude anything made to order, and a length cut for you may count. The safest approach is to order a short length first, see the colour in daylight, then order the full amount.

Does Liberty have sales?

Yes, regularly. When we checked in October 2026 the Autumn Reset was offering up to 20% off home, fabrics, jewellery and beauty, and up to 30% off womenswear and menswear. Liberty also offers 15% off a first order for email sign-ups and £10 off for referring a friend. If a Liberty-print piece is on your list, it is worth waiting for one.

If Liberty London isn't for you

  • Morris & Co. sells William Morris wallpapers and furnishing fabrics directly, for Strawberry Thief without the department store.
  • John Lewis carries a far wider range of bedding and fabric at lower prices, with simpler returns.
