Halfords is where most British drivers buy their first socket set, and for good reason: its Halfords Advanced hand tools carry a lifetime guarantee that any of its 400-plus stores will honour over the counter. That guarantee is the core of this guide.
The six picks cover the basics of doing your own wheel, brake and oil jobs: a socket set, a bigger one if you are serious, a torque wrench, a trolley jack, axle stands to go with it, and a tyre inflator for the boot. Prices move a lot here, with frequent half-price events on the bigger sets, so we have flagged where the figure on the page and the figure in the listings did not agree.
This is the set that covers most home car jobs without the bulk of the 200-piece version. It has 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2-inch drives, standard and deep six-point metric sockets, 100-tooth ratchets, universal joints, an 18-inch breaker bar and combination spanners. The case measures 390 x 570 x 130mm, and the guarantee covers the tools but not the case or foam inserts. The product page showed £250 when we read it, while the socket-set listing showed it reduced to £125, so check at the till.
Its low reviews are few but pointed: two buyers had the smallest ratchet fail straight out of the box, another found the spanner jaws roughly finished, and one complained there is no ratchet screwdriver to use the bits with.
Yes, if
You are starting to service your own car
You want a guarantee you can claim in any branch
No, if
You only need a few sockets for bike or furniture jobs
2Best value
Michelin 12v DC Compact Tyre Inflator
A 12V inflator that plugs into the car, stops at a pre-set pressure, and handles bike tyres and balls with the adapters supplied.
Checking tyre pressures is the car job people put off, and a pre-set inflator makes it a two-minute task. This one runs from the 12V socket on a 3m cord, so there is no battery to forget to charge. You set the pressure, it stops when it gets there, and Michelin quotes accuracy within 1 PSI up to 50 PSI. It weighs 700g, includes Presta, needle and inflatables adapters, and has a one-year limited warranty.
Read the limits. It runs for 10 minutes before needing 15 to cool, and it is not suitable for space-saver tyres. Several low reviews say the valve connector has no lever lock and leaks air unless held at the right angle, and one buyer found it hard to use with arthritic hands.
Yes, if
You want to check pressures monthly without a garage trip
You also have bikes to pump up
No, if
You want a cordless inflator to carry away from the car
3Best for wheel nuts
Halfords Advanced Torque Wrench Model 200
A 1/2-inch drive click wrench from 40 to 200Nm, accurate to 3% of the reading, with a lifetime guarantee that comes with a catch.
If you take wheels off, you need a torque wrench to put them back on properly, and this is the right size for most cars. It is a 1/2-inch square drive with a 40 to 200Nm range (30 to 150 lbf.ft), works clockwise and anticlockwise, and Halfords states accuracy of plus or minus 3% of the reading to ISO 6789-1:2017. It comes in a foam-lined box.
The catch is in the guarantee. The lifetime cover on Halfords Advanced torque wrenches depends on producing a valid Declaration of Conformance, the old calibration certificate, which the page says is valid for 18 months from purchase or recalibration. It also starts at 40Nm, too high for small engine and bike bolts. Its handful of reviews are all five stars.
Yes, if
You change wheels or fit brakes yourself
You want both Nm and lbf.ft scales
No, if
Your bolts need less than 40Nm
4Best for lifting
Halfords 2 Tonne Hydraulic Trolley Jack
A steel trolley jack that lifts 2 tonnes from 14cm to 34cm, with an overload valve and a two-year guarantee.
The scissor jack in your boot is for emergencies. For anything you plan to do on the drive, a trolley jack is quicker and steadier, and this is the cheap, sensible one. It lifts 2 tonnes through a range of 14 to 34cm, has a 6.7cm saddle, rugged wheels, a clip to store the handle and an automatic safety overload valve. Halfords gives it a two-year replace-if-faulty guarantee.
Its reviews are almost all five stars; the one three-star review calls it slow to raise. The bigger limitation is the 14cm minimum height, which may not slide under a lowered or sporty car; Halfords sells a low-profile version for that. A jack is for lifting only: never work under a car held up on one.
Yes, if
You do wheel, brake or tyre jobs at home
You want a jack that fits in a car boot
No, if
Your car sits low or you drive a heavy 4x4
5Best for working underneath
Halfords 2 Tonne Axle Stands
A pair of welded steel stands rated at 1 tonne each, with three height positions and a load pin on a safety chain.
Buy these with the jack, not later. They are a pair of welded steel stands in bright orange, each rated at 1,000kg, with a wide base, a load pin on a safety chain and three height settings between 26.5cm and 36.5cm. They were £20.99 when we checked, reduced from £32.
We found no low reviews; the four-star ones simply call them fine for home use. The weakness is in the specification. Three positions is not many, so the setting may not match the height you need, and the top setting (36.5cm) is above the 34cm maximum of the trolley jack above. The rating is 1 tonne per stand, so a heavy SUV calls for the 3-tonne pair. The page lists no guarantee period, unlike the jack.
Yes, if
You will be under the car for any reason
You already own a trolley jack
No, if
Your vehicle needs more than a 1-tonne stand
6Best upgrade
Halfords Advanced 200 Piece Socket and Ratchet Spanner Set
The bigger Advanced set, adding 72-tooth ratchet spanners, wheel-nut sockets and a wide spread of bits, sockets to 36mm.
This is the set Halfords calls its best seller, and it has more than a thousand reviews on the product page. Over the 150-piece set it adds 72-tooth ratchet spanners, nylon-coated alloy wheel-nut sockets, long and short hex, Torx and spline bits, and sockets from 4mm to 36mm (deep ones to 27mm). It has the same lifetime guarantee.
The weaknesses are size and the case. It lists a weight of 21 against the 150-piece set’s 11.5, and the case measures 630 x 480 x 100mm. The few low reviews complain that the case is flimsy, will not close properly or lets spanners fall out of their slots, and one owner says the bits rust quickly. The case and inserts are excluded from the guarantee.
Yes, if
You work on cars often enough to need the ratchet spanners

How to choose
1Pick the set for your jobs
The 150-piece set covers servicing, brakes and suspension on most cars, with all three drive sizes and an 18-inch breaker bar. The 200-piece set mainly adds ratchet spanners, wheel-nut sockets and more bits, at nearly double the weight. Halfords also sells small single-drive sets, which suit bikes and flat-pack furniture better than either. Buy the smallest set that covers what you will actually do.
2Keep the paperwork for torque wrenches
The lifetime guarantee on other Advanced tools needs only proof of purchase. Torque wrenches differ: the guarantee depends on a valid Declaration of Conformance, which lasts 18 months from purchase or recalibration. If you want the guarantee to hold, keep the certificate with the wrench and budget for recalibration. A wrench that sits in a drawer for years may no longer be covered.
3Buy the jack and the stands together
A trolley jack lifts the car, and axle stands hold it. Halfords sells both at modest prices, and the stands cost less than the jack. Check that the jack’s minimum height fits under your car (14cm for the 2-tonne model) and that the stands’ rating suits your vehicle’s weight. Heavier cars need the 3-tonne versions of both, and the stands should go under the points your handbook names.
4Check the price on the day
Halfords runs frequent promotions on its bigger sets, and the figure on the product page did not always match the listing when we checked. Motoring Club Premium members get an extra 5% off motoring products, and there is a price-match promise with its own terms. On a £250-plus socket set those differences add up, so confirm the price in the basket before paying.
Where Halfords wins, and where rivals do
The reason to buy hand tools at Halfords rather than online is the lifetime guarantee on the Halfords Advanced range. If a tool breaks, snaps, bends or cracks in normal use, any branch will order a replacement or swap it on the spot; the page says over 99% of tools returned under warranty are replaced. It does not cover tools that are rusted, burnt, modified or ground down, nor cases and foam.
The weak spot is service. Halfords Retail scored 3.5 out of 5 on Trustpilot when we checked, rated Average, and recent one-star reviews are mostly about garage work, fitting appointments and click-and-collect orders that were out of stock on arrival. Buying tools across the counter mostly avoids those. Prices swing with promotions, so the price-match promise and Motoring Club discounts are worth checking before you pay.

How does the Halfords lifetime tool guarantee work?
It applies to Halfords Advanced hand tools. If one fails while being used as designed, take it to any Halfords store and staff will replace it on the spot or order one; discontinued tools are swapped for an equivalent. It excludes tools that are rusted, burnt, modified or ground down, plus cases and foam inserts. Torque wrenches also need a valid certificate.
Is Motoring Club Premium worth it for tool buyers?
Only if you use the motoring side. Premium costs £54 a year on a 12-month minimum term and includes an MOT, a £10 voucher, 5% off motoring products and services, and next-day delivery with no minimum spend. If you already pay for an MOT, it can pay back; for an occasional socket set, the free tier’s £5 voucher may be enough.
Can I return a tool I have opened?
For a change of mind, Halfords asks that items be unused, clean and in their original packaging, within 30 days, with proof of purchase. Outside 30 days, a store manager may offer store credit at their discretion. Faulty items are handled separately: refund within 30 days, repair or replacement after that, and the lifetime guarantee for Advanced tools.
