For London to Paris, Brussels, Lille, Amsterdam and Rotterdam, Eurostar is the only through train, so the real choice is not whether to use it but which ticket to buy. The classes differ less on the train than on paper: what you can change, when you can get a refund, how early you must be at St Pancras and whether anyone brings you lunch.
This guide covers six tickets and fares sold on eurostar.com, from Standard and the last-minute Snap fare to Premier, Train + Hotel packages and the companion fare. The headline advice: Standard is the right ticket for most trips now that changes are free until an hour before departure, book direct rather than through a third party, and treat the recommended arrival time as a rule.
Standard is the class most people should buy. One-way fares start from £39 on the London routes, and every Standard ticket can be exchanged as often as you like, with no fee, up to an hour before departure. Refunds are possible up to seven days ahead for £25 a leg. You get a reserved seat, free wi-fi, a power socket, two large bags plus hand luggage with no weight limit, and the Eurostar Café a few coaches away.
Read the exchange rule twice. A cheaper replacement train earns no refund of the difference, and moving to a later date within seven days of travel makes the ticket non-refundable. The low-rated reviews are mostly about the station rather than the seat: crowded waiting areas at St Pancras, long queues, and one family whose seats were moved apart with no help to fix it.

2Best value
Eurostar Snap
Pick a day and a morning or afternoon slot, let Eurostar choose the train, and pay up to half the Standard price.
Snap is Eurostar’s last-minute fare. You book between ten days and the day before travel, choose a destination, a date and a time slot (before or after 1pm from London), and Eurostar assigns the train, sending the time at least 48 hours ahead. It promises up to 50% off the public Standard price, and the normal two-bag allowance still applies.
The price of that discount is rigidity. Snap tickets cannot be exchanged, refunded, cancelled or transferred, there is no seat selection, and a group of up to four is not guaranteed to sit together. Children cannot use it at all: Snap is for passengers aged 16 and over, with under-fours only on an adult’s lap. No bikes, no same-day returns, and Club Eurostar’s flexible-travel perks do not apply.

Either a morning or an afternoon train suits you

3Best for working
Eurostar Plus
More legroom, a reclining seat and, on London routes only, a meal and drinks brought to your seat, with exactly the same ticket rules as Standard.
Plus buys space and food, and nothing else. The coaches have extra legroom and big reclining seats, and on routes to and from London you get a choice of two dishes and hot and cold drinks served at your seat. On the continental routes there is no meal, which removes much of the point. Exchanges and refunds work exactly as in Standard, and so does the luggage allowance. When we checked, the fares table put Plus from £70 each way to Paris on a return, against £39 for Standard.
The service is the weak link. One recent one-star reviewer in Plus was told, with an hour and twenty minutes still to go, that the drinks service had stopped and to buy water from the café several coaches away. Another never received a meal and could not get a refund for it.

4Best upgrade
Eurostar Premier
Free changes and refunds until 48 hours after departure, a lounge, priority lanes and a later check-in: flexibility first, the meal second.
Premier is a different product, and its value lies in the conditions. You can exchange or refund the ticket with no fee until 48 hours after the train has left, and the boarding guarantee lets you take any other train that day without paying the difference. On London routes there are priority lanes that close 15 minutes before departure, so the recommended arrival at St Pancras is 45 minutes rather than 75. You also get lounge access, a three-bag allowance and a fine-dining menu.
The food and the seats draw the complaints. One recent reviewer called the seats hard with no lumbar support and said fellow passengers left the meal untouched; another found the Paris Gare du Nord lounge beyond crowded. Upgrades from Standard to Premier are not allowed, so decide at booking.

5Best for city breaks
Train + Hotel packages
Eurostar’s own train and hotel bundles for Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels and more, financially protected and sold with the flexible train conditions.
Booking the train and hotel together through Eurostar Holidays gets you a package with full financial protection, through an ABTA bond and International Passenger Protection, and the usual Standard or Plus train flexibility. Eurostar says the average saving against booking the same train and hotel separately on its site was £35, based on bookings between December 2025 and February 2026. Destinations include Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels, Lille, Bruges, Geneva and Disneyland Paris.
The weakness is what happens when something changes. Each part of the package has its own amendment and cancellation conditions, shown before you pay. If a train is cancelled, Train + Hotel refunds go through a separate form rather than Manage your booking, and the terms say a train refund does not automatically mean a refund of the hotel.

6Best for assisted travel
Companion fare
A fixed, reduced fare for someone accompanying a disabled passenger, with Standard ticket conditions whichever class you sit in.
If you are travelling as a companion to someone with a disability or reduced mobility, this is the fare to ask for. On direct London routes it is a fixed £39 each way, and it carries Standard conditions, free changes up to an hour before departure and refunds for a fee, even though wheelchair users and their companions sit together in Plus or Premier coaches on London routes. One companion can be booked online alongside a wheelchair fare; anyone else must call.
The fare is good value. The assistance around it is where the low-rated reviews land: one parent described no help on arrival in London, leaving a disabled daughter unable to get off the train, and another found assistance vanished after a rebooking. Pre-book assistance at least 24 hours ahead, and again after any change.
Pick it if
You are accompanying a wheelchair user on a London route
You want Standard flexibility in a Plus or Premier seat
Pass if
The person you assist is not a wheelchair user and you cannot phone

Why Eurostar, and why not
Eurostar is the only through train under the Channel, and for city-centre trips it beats flying on almost everything that matters to a traveller. There is no liquids rule, no weight limit on bags, and border checks happen before you board, so you step off in the middle of Paris or Brussels and leave.
Where rivals win is service and price certainty. A cheap flight can undercut a peak-time fare, Le Shuttle suits families with a boot full of luggage, and nobody can accuse Eurostar’s contact centre of being easy to reach. Its UK Trustpilot score was 2.1 out of 5 when we checked, and recent one-star reviews describe hour-long phone holds, late-night cancellation emails and crowded waiting areas at St Pancras. Several reviewers say they are waiting for a competitor. Until one arrives, buy direct and use the self-service tools.
Choosing the right one
1Start with how fixed your plans are
The ticket conditions matter more than the seat. Standard and Plus can be changed free up to an hour before departure but only refunded, for £25 a leg, a week or more ahead. Premier can be changed or refunded free until 48 hours after the train has left. Snap cannot be changed at all. If the trip might be cancelled outright, Standard with travel insurance is cheaper than Premier for most people.
2Check which route you are on
Several perks only apply to and from London. The Plus meal is served on London routes only, Premier’s priority lanes exist only on London routes, and the bag length limit is 85cm on London routes against 75cm elsewhere. Between Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam and Cologne, Plus is mostly a bigger seat, and fares for those routes start far lower than the London ones.
3Budget the time at the station
Eurostar recommends arriving at St Pancras 75 minutes before departure in Standard and Plus and 45 in Premier; at Paris Gare du Nord it is 75 to 90 minutes. Gates close 30 minutes before departure (15 for Premier), and if you miss them the next available train costs a £44 fee in Standard or Plus. Download the ticket, because the recommended time printed on it can change.
4Children change the arithmetic
Children aged 4 to 11 pay roughly 30% less in Standard and Plus at peak times, and up to about half off-peak; there is no child discount in Premier. Under-fours travel free on a lap in any class. Snap is closed to anyone under 16, so a family that wants the cheapest last-minute fare has to look at Standard instead.

In Standard and Plus, two large bags (up to 85cm long on London routes, 75cm on the others) plus one piece of hand luggage, with no weight limit and no liquids rule. Premier allows three bags. Folded pushchairs travel free. Security still applies at the station: one recent reviewer had replacement razor blades confiscated at Amsterdam despite reading the guidance, so check the prohibited items list.
Should I take compensation as a voucher or cash?
The voucher is worth more but ties you to Eurostar. For a delay of three hours or more you get 75% of the leg as an e-voucher or 50% as cash; for one to two hours it is 30% against 25%. Vouchers are valid for 12 months from the delayed train. If you are not sure you will travel again within the year, take the cash.
Can I upgrade from Standard to Premier later?
No. You can exchange a Standard ticket for Plus, paying the difference, but upgrades from Standard to Premier are not allowed. Eurostar sometimes invites passengers on London routes to bid for an upgrade a few days before travel; a winning bid is charged separately and is not refunded if you then change trains.
Rivals worth a look
Le Shuttle carries the car under the Channel, better for families with a full boot or a French destination off the rail map.
Trainline sells Eurostar tickets alongside UK rail, but refunds then go through Trainline rather than Eurostar.
DFDS runs the Dover ferries: slower and weather-dependent, with no limit on what the car carries.
